Cal-Hi Sports Northern California Boys Basketball Player of the Week Jalen Stokes (Dublin) Jr.
We head to the Tri-Valley area of the East Bay portion of the CIF North Coast Section to find our Northern California Boys Player of the Week and it’s at Dublin High that we find our honoree.
The 6-foot-5 wing was considered one of the top sophomore recruits in Northern California and so far in his junior season Stokes has picked up right where he left off. We saw him in person at the NorCal Tip-Off Classic in the one game Dublin has lost in a 5-1 start, but even in that game, a 63-54 loss to St. Ignatius of San Francisco, Stokes was in our opinion the top player on the floor after finishing with a double-double 20 points and 12 rebounds despite drawing multiple defenders.
Last week, Stokes continued to stroke the basketball after leading his team to three wins and the tournament title at the Washington tournament in Fremont. Besides the Tip-Off Classic performance, it’s for his efforts in Fremont that has garnered him this statewide honor.
The tournament MVP went for 30 points, 16 rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 71-55 championship game victory over Amador Valley of Pleasanton. In the opening game against Mission San Jose of Fremont, Stokes had 22 points, eight rebounds and four steals in a 94-42 victory. In a semifinal 93-42 victory over Livermore, and in limited play, he had 12 points, six rebounds and five steals. To start the week and before the tournament began, he played around a half of a 94-49 victory over Hayward, but still had team highs of 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
So far this season, and with his play limited in the lopsided wins, Stokes is averaging 20.0 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.

Last week, Shane (Salesian Prep) Bell earned Player of the Week honors in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. He's at Cal State Los Angeles. Bell has one season remaining and we would love to see him finish out in D1.

Saw UCLA versus Villanova a week or so ago and, besides being rather boring, I was shocked at the lack of talent on the Bruins squad. Yes, UCLA. Besides big Adem Bona, there were no ready to move on NBA prospects. Their guard play was labored and nondescript. There were no must-stay-with dead-eye shooters. Everything was labored. UCLA has lost every 'big' game thus far this season, losing to Marquette by two and Gonzaga by four, Ohio State by seven and Villanova by nine. Their wins: beating St. Francis, Long Island, Chaminade, Lafayette and UC Riverside (66-65!!!) This ain't your mama's UCLA. There must be some heat being generated under Mick Cronin's behind in Westwood.
*** Just saw that UCLA lost to Cal State Northridge 76-72 last night!!! Make that a bonfire under Mick Cronin.

Former CCSF talent EJ Neal is struggling with his shooting thus far this season at Idaho. In eight games and 18 minutes an outing, the 6-5 junior is shooting 27% overall, 14% from long range and 65% at the foul line. To his credit, he does have eight steals (one per game) and five blocked shots. He'll pick it up.

In a December 16th 68-59 loss with UC Santa Barbara, Alex Mirkviladze led Loyola Marymount with both 18 points and nine boards. The 6-foot-8 former Modesto Christian talent is averaging 11.4 points and 5.7 rebounds on the season. He bailed from a disastrous Cal State Northridge program after his freshman season.

Former UC Davis talent Ezra (Heritage High) Manjon is leading Vanderbilt in scoring this season at 16.1 points per game as well as assists (27) and steals (10). He has played and started in seven games and is on the court for 30 minutes a contest. The Commodores are 4-6. We knew he would be good but didn't see him leading the team! Too bad he didn't go with a better program.

"Zander Jimenez for the Defense"
At 6-foot-3, he's the best defender in the Bay Area. He stays in good defensive position all 94 feet. Coaches talk all the time about wanting toughness plus guys who can defend. Jimenez brings both. Let's see if those words and that sentiment gets backed up by a righteous offer.
