D1 Scores

Be seated before you read further. A program SJSU has long struggled against, Nevada came down to San Jose naturally thinking another win would soon be in the books, especially considering the depleted Spartan roster. The final score: San Jose State University 87, Nevada 71. A 47-32 initial 20 minutes provided the margin of victory as team MVP Colby Garland led once again with both 29 points and nine assists. He shot 10-17, 4-5 and 5-6. Teammate Adrian Myers provided 21 points and a tops-on-the-team 13 rebounds. SJSU shot 52% overall plus 15-29 on three-pointers. Nevada went 24-32 at the foul line but was held to 40% overall shooting, 3-20 on trey attempts. game report.

Up in Potato Land, Boise State brought San Jose State University back down to earth 84-69. The Spartans shot a respectable 43% overall (but 55% for BSU). However, they finished 4-23 beyond the arc and earned just seven free throws. Junior Adrian Meyers paced SJSU with 23 points and may just have earned a spot on next season's squad with Colby Garland right behind at 22 points. Garland reached the 1,000 point mark in his lone season in San Jose. Four of the five Spartan starters played all 40 minutes. game report.

........................................

Up in Climate Pledge Arena, St. Mary's took a 35-28 halftime lead but the Seahawks had it tied at 61 with four minutes remaining. Seattle went ahead 63-61 at the 3:30 mark, followed by a 65-65 tie with 2:00 left. The hosts actually went ahead 67-65 but St. Mary's pulled back in front 71-68 with 15 seconds showing. A Seattle bucket made it 71-70 but the Moraga-ites eventually won 72-70. Guard Mikey (Prolific Prep) Lewis was 'on' with 22 points in 29 minutes with teammate Paulius Murauskas adding 15 points and nine boards. He attempted just 10 shots in 30 minutes so possibly the Seahawk defensive scheme was designed to limit his touches/looks. The hometowners shot 45% overall to 44% for Coach Randy Bennett's guys who did take the battle of the boards 36-27. game report.

Taking to Washington State's homecourt, St. Mary's handled the Cougars 83-67 via the plus contributions from three starters: Paulius Murauskas led the charge with 17 points plus 12 rebound as well as four assists, point Joshua Dent actually paced the Gaels in scoring with 22 points and Mikey (Prolific Prep) Lewis supplied 16 points. The Moraga crew shot 54%, to 44% for the hosts and out-rebounded their opponents 38-25. game report.

Stanford voyaged across the Bay but then wished they hadn't as host California repped the home court with success 72-66. The win came despite the Berkeley-ites shooting just 35% although the Palo Alto-ites were at 33%. No nets were torched in this one. The halftime score was 39-25 in favor of Mario Savio's alma mater. Chris Bell led the Bear attack with 20 points, John Camden produced 18 points and a team high eight boards, with Dai Dai Ames tallying 17 points plus seven rebounds. Boosted by 11 accurate free throws, Cardinal Aidan Cammann concluded the 40 minutes with 19 points and teammate Ebuka Okorie enjoyed 17 points as well as a by far team best 13 boards. It's difficult to come out ahead when your 6-foot-2 freshman point's board work leads his team. game report. Daily Californian game report.

........................................

In Pullman, Washington State took care of Pacific 87-70 as a 51-40 halftime lead finally proved impossible to overcome. The Stockton-ites got the deficit down to one with 13:38 on the clock but fell back again. Four Tigers scored in double figures, led by Ralph Elias' 16 points, but shooting a solid 43% as a team won't cut it if the opponent finishes at 57%. WSU also went a blazing 14-28 from long distance and committed a minuscule seven turnovers. game report.

Then, at the McCarthey Athletic Center (had to throw that in), Gonzaga welcomed Pacific and each put up 29 points during the first 20 minutes. At that point, the Tigers were out-shooting the hosts 55% to 37%. However, the tide turned home a bit and the Zags pulled of a 71-62 victory despite the Stockton-ites holding an overall 47% to 43% shooting advantage. Pacific's Justin Rochelin obviously enjoyed the foreign backboards and rims via 14 rebounds and 12 points on an efficient 4-7, 1-2, 3-3 accuracy. Teammate Justin Clayton dished out eight assists. game report.

........................................

Host USF had the opportunity to nab a really needed boost with a win even though the opponent was vaunted Gonzaga but the Zags went out to a 41-29 halftime lead as 6-foot-9 big Graham Ike led with 13 points in 18 minutes. For the Dons, Tyrone Riley IV showed early life with nine points on 4-6 shooting in 17 minutes. In the second 20 minutes, the Spokaners led 62-42 at the 12:00 mark. he final score: 80-59. The most compelling of basic stats: Gonzaga shot 55% overall to 35% for San Francisco. Ike concluded the night with 22 points and Riley IV enjoyed 16 points. game report.

........................................

Down in Orange County, UC Davis flew in to challenge fellow Big West Conference member Cal State Fullerton and the Aggies showed fresher legs and greater precision to the tune of a 50-36 lead at the half. But a reversal 52-37 in the second 20 minutes—produced a one point win for the Titans. 6-foot-8 Nor Cal-er Landon Wood High/Menlo College) Seaman tallied 26 points in 27 minutes (he came in averaging 12.3 points), shooting 9-11, 2-4, 6-8,alongside seven boards plus three assists to carry Fullerton. Also coming in averaging 12.3 points, 6-foot-6 Nils Cooper paced the Davis-ites with his own 26 points (9-13 shooting overall, 8-8 from the foul line) plus six rebounds and six assists. 6-foot-3 guard teammate Connor (Dougherty Valley High) Sevilla tallied 13 points on 3-6, 3-5, 4-4 shooting. 6-foot teammate Brayden Fagami produced 10 points and six assists with zero turnovers in 25 minutes. The Aggies earned 23 assists on 28 buckets. game report.

But UC Davis turned it around in facing UC Riverside by nabbing a 78-73 victory on Saturday after leading 37-31 at the conclusion of the first 20 minutes. Connor (Dougherty Valley High) Sevilla shot 11-13 at the foul line in finishing with a team high 22 points and freshman guard Jalen (Dougherty Valley High) Stokes totaled 16 points (10-10 at the foul line) while bringing down a tops-on-the-team seven rebounds. Although shooting just 4-19 on three-point attempts, the Aggies finished 30-39 at the charity stripe. game report.

........................................

This one hurt as similarly-talented teams Eastern Washington and Sacramento State paired up in CA's capital with the former nabbing a 102-94 victory. This despite Prophet Johnson preaching The Word consisting of 26 points, nine boards, eight assists and four steals. Teammate Arman Madi also exploded for 26 points on 10-15, 2-4, 4-5 shooting. The foremost dagger was the Eagles going 14-28 from beyond the arc. game report.

At the Hornet Pavilion, Idaho won over Sacramento State 86-80 despite Mark (Rocklin High) Lavrenov totaling a tops-on-his-team 20 points and 12 rebounds. Teammate Prophet Johnson aided the cause with his 15 points, six assists, five steals and three boards. Arman Madi tallied 15 points boosted by eight made free throws. But a 49-28 differential in rebounding was crushing. game report.

........................................

Cal Poly headed to the islands but with no letup mind, at least not until nabbing a victory. The Mustangs rode to a 44-35 halftime lead versus Hawai'i powered by Hamad Mousa's 14 points and five rebounds. On an off-shooting night (5-17 overall but 12-13 at the foul line), he finished with 24 points and nine rebounds in the CP 86-75 success. Teammate Cayden (St. Mary's-Stockton) Ward contributed 19 points on 8-12 overall shooting. game report.

........................................

Up by six on a foreign court at halftime, Santa Clara used a 47-35 second 20 minutes to defeat USF 91-72. Elijah (West Valley College) Mahi with 30 points led his squad and he added eight boards plus four steals. Christian Hammond provided 18 points and, off the bench, Thierry Darlan finished with 15 points on 5-7, 3-4 and 2-2 shooting and four steals. For the Dons, Ryan (Dougherty Valley High) Beasley shot 4-7, 3-4, 5-6 to conclude with 24 pointsand he also led with five assists. Junjie Wang's 19 points was acquired extremely proficiently via 7-8, 3-4, 2-3 shooting accuracy. The now 23-6, 14-2 Broncos shot 49% overall to a close by 46% for the Hilltoppers but the former put up a difference-making 16 more attempts. USF now stands 15-15, 7-10. game report.

........................................

Mamoud (Santa Teresa High/West Valley College) Fofana wears #11 but he obviously likes the number three digits higher because he posted a line of 14 points and 14 rebounds in the Cal State Northridge 85-83 overtime defeat of host UC Santa Barbara.

........................................

Grand Canyon bested San Diego State 73-63 although Aztec Miles (Lincoln High-Stockton) Byrd concluded with 18 points (6-11, 3-6, 3-3 shooting), four rebounds, four blocked shots plus two assists.

........................................

Getting a wee bit tired of UCLA Coach Mick Cronin with his actions and press quotes all the while he has yet to make UCLA an annual national competitor for an NCAA championship during his seven-year thus far tenure. My sense is Cronin is best suited for coaching at a competitive program more in an upstart role, one which lands good but not necessarily potentially great talents, like a Cincinnati, unlike UCLA. 'Coaching up' nationally unheralded kids who stay with the team for four or five years seems to be his forte. If we are talking bottom line, the UCLA basketball program helmed by Cronin isn't even competitive in the Big 10 let alone for a national championship. The required UCLA resources to be a national power are present but are certainly not matching up with Cronin's underwhelming recruiting classes. When has Cronin landed a prep recruit, snatching him away from a Kentucky, a Kansas or even now an Arkansas? Never. Something within the equation needs to change.

Interesting take on Cronin's tenure.

Other Scores

It got a little too close as The Kelp Bed wasn't very Pioneer friendly but Cal State East Bay bested host Cal State Monterey Bay 70-68 with all five Pio starters finishing in double figures scoring and Jalen Foy leading all with 15 points plus 12 boards, seven offensively. CSEB shot just 33% on the night but pushed their record 25-0.

Then, the Pioneers headed south to face Cal State San Marcos and, once again, Cal State East Bay earned another victory 70-63. With 16 points, Ramsey Huff led the undefeated who held CSSM to 34% overall shooting, 23% from long distance.

In The City, CCSF handled Las Positas College 82-63, jumping out to a 42-27 halftime lead. For the Rams, 6-foot-1 sophomore James (Clayton Valley High) Moore led with both 19 points (5-11 on threes) and four steals. Other notable numbers as a team, CCSF shot 40 three-pointers out of a total of 67 shots, making 14, earned 20 assists on 29 baskets, nabbed 20 steals and 18 of 39 rebounds came on the offensive end.

Charles Elijah poured in a very efficient 36 points on 14-19 shooting from the floor plus 8-9 at the charity stripe and also grabbed 16 rebounds in the UC Merced 86-69 victory over visiting Cal State Los Angeles.

Behind 30 points plus seven rebounds via Cameron (Bishop O'Dowd) Brown, Biola bested Dominican University 87-76. On the flip side, Dominican's Nick (St. Patrick St. Vincent/Sonoma State) Medeiros finished with 25 points and eight assists.

In Atherton, 6-foot-7 Nick (Foothill High) High posted an 18 point, six rebound, two assist, one block line in Menlo College's 80-74 loss to Westmont College.

6-foot-3 junior Varick (Monterey Trail High) Lewis provided a tied-for-team-high 14 points and teammate Wyatt Studer shot 4-6 from three-point range to also supply 14 points. the William Jessup University's 85-77 success versus host Hawai'i Pacific.

6-foot-10 redshirt freshman Malik (Inderkum High) Johnson produced 11 boards, 10 points (five shots taken) plus five blocked shots in 28 minutes but Stanislaus State fell at home 74-69 to Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Demarreya (Enterprise High/Yuba College) Lewis-Cooper finished with a team high 18 points in the Cal Poly Pomona 67-64 win over visiting Chico State. For the Wildcats, 6-foot-1 junior guard Ned (Pleasant Valley High) Joyce started out at a point a minute clip but foul trouble limited him to 14 minutes overall and thus 14 points. He shot 4-8 on three-pointers. 6-foot-7 freshman forward Braddock (De La Salle High) Kjellesvig grabbed nine rebounds, eight offensively. He's a keeper. game report.

5-foot-10 junior guard Brandon (Arcata High) Bento-Jackson netted 20 points, boosted by 6-11 three-point shooting, but Cal Poly Humboldt fell 80-77 to CSU San Bernardino in the Southland.

Merritt College defeated Solano College 78-71 with the Allison Bros providing the primary firepower for the victors. Keith (Hercules High/Contra Costa College) Allison scored 25 points along with six boards and Kaleb (Pinole Valley High/Contra Costa College) Allison produced 25 points and five rebounds. The latter will never hear the end of that one rebound difference.

Chris (Jesuit High/Sac State/Santa Rosa JC/Sonoma State) Holley led four Wildcats in double figures scoring with 17 points but Chico State fell 83-64 to Cal State San Bernardino. Chico will be looking to add size upfront and talents who can draw foul from opponents in the off-season. Still like the looks of 6-foot-7 freshman Braddock (De La Salle High) Kjellesvig's all-around game as he produced six points, six boards, four assists and three blocked shots in this matchup. game report.

Tochi (Los Medanos College) Onyeador stuffed the stats sheet via 16 points, 14 rebounds and five shot rejections yet Whittier College fell to Redlands College 86-82. Teammate Jonathan (Del Oro High/Menlo College) Duley tallied 20 points to lead WC.

........................................

Mr. Double-Double Kiratraj Sanghera

Dennis Rodman is a member of the NBA Hall of Fame. At 6-foot-6, he earned that status because of his prominent rebounding prowess and defensive ability, not for scoring since he averaged 7.3 points per game in his career. Ohlone College's Kiratraj Sanghera is not Dennis Rodman and any comparison between a heralded NBA player and a community college player is silly but each demonstrates similar skills.

Sanghera's Impressive Production

On his own, the redshirt sophomore is producing remarkable rebounding and defensive statistics. Try 12.5 boards a game to date, an outstanding 127 offensive and as well as 149 defensive, plus a terrific 64 blocked shots, all in 22 games. Sanghera's personal high of a 36-inch vertical leap is obviously put to good advantage. Add in 14.8 points and 2.2 assists a contest.

In addition to his impressive statistics, Sanghera said, "I am a leader on our team. I see that as making sure the team chemistry and the energy are good and that I'm being a good teammate. I can't say I'm the loudest [talker on the team] but my leadership is a combination of speaking and demonstrating."

Top Skills

But in asking what his best basketball skills are, Sanghera first offered, "I am really coachable. I go out and do the right play and make the right read." Regarding his impressive works on the boards, "in my opinion, it's not size or athleticism, it is effort, it's fighting for the rebounds."

What's interesting is the two basketball talents he cites a influences are recognized by fans for other characteristics other then rebounding. "It's Kobe and LeBron." The reason behind his selections are "their great mindsets." It's the combination of determining what is best to do when and giving your top effort on the court that impresses Sanghera the most.

Asked for his best basketball moments, he recalled "going back to my senior year at American High (Fremont), we were not known for having a great school record and came in as a #14 seed versus #3 Redwood High." American won that matchup in overtime 61-58, with Sanghera tallying 19 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. His other fond memory is 'scoring 25 points and grabbing 21 rebounds last December against Los Medanos College." He modestly omitted blocking four shots in that game.

Excellent academics

Despite all the time and attention required by his basketball participation, Sanghera still sports a 4.0 grade point average and that plays into his recruiting goal. That being, "I want to play for a UC or an Ivy League program." Determining what position hebwill play is next to impossible to determine since college rosters are nowhere near set for next season but "I assume it will be as four or a five."

As for assistance provided to him on his basketball journey, he served up "I thank my family -- especially my parents -- since I wouldn't be playing basketball without them, my uncle who pushed me, my cousins and all my coaches and teammates.

In his next step academically, Sanghera will major in Business Administration with a focus on accounting. "I want to be a CPA (Certified Public Accountant)," he explained. If he grabs deductions like he does rebounds and swats away IRS inquiries like basketballs, then he'll definitely be extremely successful.

"Herb Sendek finds another diamond in Allen Graves" Tuck Clarry

"If finding NBA-level talent outside of the top 100 of high school rankings was oil prospecting, Herb Sendek might just be Daniel Plainview. In his 32nd year as a head coach, Sendek has done it again with the meteoric rise of redshirt freshman big man Allen Graves this season. The 6-9 Louisianan wasn’t even ranked or evaluated on 247 his senior year of high school, despite being Mr. Louisiana and Mr. Basketball for his home state and a sibling to two other high major basketball players.

Graves’ redshirt development shows the honing of the skillsets he should in EYBL and high school ball, a stretch forward that has an ability to use his size and displays handles and body control that gets him past similarly sized defenders. Over the course of the season, he’s supplanted senior and preseason all-conference player Elijah Mahi as the second scorer on the team.

In league play, Graves leads the WCC in offensive rating with a score of 150.1. Graham Ike is second in the category, trailing Graves by 11.4 rating points. He’s shooting 63.6% in the paint and 39.3% from three in conference play. But what may be most impressive is that 63% of the two-point field goals he made in WCC play have come unassisted.

Per Synergy, Graves is averaging an absurd 1.28 points per possession. He's equally efficient as a catch-and-shoot scorer from the outside as he is a post-up scorer on the low block. He's averaging 1.83 points per possession as a cutter. It doesn't get any more "pick your poison" than how you end up deciding to defend the forward.

The freshman is far more than a scorer, too. He’s well beyond his years in decision-making on ball at multiple levels of the offense. He holds an assist rate of 14.2% in conference play while leading the league in turnover percentage at just 5.2%. He leads the conference in steal rate at 5.2% and has a block rate of 5.4% on the season. He has the second-highest offensive rebounding rate in the conference despite being listed at 6-foot-9.

Graves posted 18 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 block when the Broncos played Gonzaga in Spokane. If he can replicate his production and the shooters trend towards their season averages, we could be looking at the Broncos punching their ticket to the tournament on Saturday."

"Dave Smart flips Pacific into a top 4 team in the WCC" Tuck Clarry

"The Pacific Tigers closed out the 2024-2025 season as the 284th team in KenPom and 297th in the NET. They lost their last 5 games and won just 4 of their final 24. It was a hellish season for a luminary Canadian head coach who was making due with random pieces in his first year as a head coach in the United States.

Pacific finished 10th in the WCC last season with two squeaker one-possession games saving them from the basement of the league standings. Smart was at his wits' end with how last season went when talking to him in the preseason. Due to his start date in Stockton, he and his staff were well behind in the process of recruiting and hitting the portal and had to make do.

“We were so far behind in the process last year,” Smart said. “We were begging guys to come. We recruited in a way that I refuse to.”

Just 16.1% of the minutes from last year’s team remain on the 2025-2026 roster, with the lone returner being preseason all-conference selectee Elias Ralph, who returned for a graduate season. The 6-foot-7 forward has developed into a confident and crafty scorer, averaging 15.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.

Ralph is third in the conference for 2nd chance points this season, a direct effect of Pacific’s dominance on the glass throughout league play. The Tigers lead the league in offensive rebounding rate this season at 36.6% and are the first team to finish ahead of Saint Mary’s in three seasons. They also lead the conference in limiting opponent offensive rebounding rate at 22%.

Center Isaac Jack has been a perfect pairing to Ralph as a rebounder and interior piece. He’s averaging 8.6 paint points in WCC action and 2.8 offensive rebounds.
