San Francisco, West Coast Conference

The Dons will lose their top three scorers off last year’s team, but they do return five of their top eight scorers. And four of those five players are 6-foot-8 and above, with two being listed at 7-foot-1. Coach Chris Gerlufsen will return size. They also bring in a major haul from the transfer portal. This includes two former top-100 ranked players in guard Malik Thomas (USC) and wing Mike Sharavjamts (Dayton). At his core, Thomas is a 6-foot-2 bucket-getter, and Sharavjamts is a 6-foot-8, do-it-all guard/wing who can handle, shoot, and pass with a little bit of pop. The team’s leading returning assist man is Marcus Williams, a 6-foot-2 guard who shot 40.8 percent from three while playing 25.5 minutes last season.

Two more transfers who look to figure into the plans this season are 6-foot-8 Stefan Todorovic, who has a reputation as a sniper from SMU, and Jonathan Mogbo. Mogbo is a 6-foot-8 forward who averaged eight and seven with 1.1 blocks at Missouri State last season. On paper, this team will have size, length, shooting, and depth.

--------------------

Spoelstra also believes the Heat will see “bigger jumps” from Jamaree Bouyea, who remained with the club on another two-way deal. “He improved being able to run a team, get guys organized,” Spoelstra said, referring to Bouyea’s play in the G League. “And defensively and the things that he can do with his speed are just super unique. So we wanted to have an opportunity to continue his development and have a second year at it.”

Bouyea is a 6-foot-2 guard out of USF and Palma High.

--------------------

--------------------

John Bynum Jr.: "Miles Lewis (Contra Costa College) has committed to Tarleton State University. Lewis averaged 13.9 points and 4.8 assists last season for the Comets."

The 6-foot-1 Lewis is out of Sacramento High. TSU is located in Texas.

--------------------

Jake Lieberman: "Malick Diallo gives me an update about visiting programs.

- Diallo is visiting Cal tomorrow (August 26)
- TCU, September 9
- Vanderbilt, September 23
- BYU, October 21

- Working on three other programs, too.  6’10 top-150 prospect in class of ‘24"

--------------------

--------------------

Zander Jimenez for the Defense

2024 6-foot-3 prospect Zander Jimenez of Salesian Prep already does multiple things well in his young life -- two things exceptionally so, even though his major pair of accomplishments are shied away from by most due to the effort involved and difficulty of achieving each. First, he is an elite defender on the basketball court -- how many high school guards, we're not talking bigs here -- ever achieve such a rating? Second, he sports a 4.57 grade point average while taking advanced placement classes.

Regarding the former, Jimenez began defending the best opposing offensive player since middle school. "I love to pressure full court and use my body a lot ," Jimenez explained. "My defensive intensity turns from me being a pest to visible annoyance and frustration on my opponent's part. Even when I play with friends, nobody wants me guarding them." He possesses a combination of a high motor, physical aggressiveness and superb lateral speed. Add in solid techniques as he remains in good defensive position staying with his opponent all the way down the court.

Family Influences

As for his extraordinary academic prowess, Jimenez said, "I've always enjoyed learning so I'm taking every class I can. My Mom stresses strong academics and tells me I've done a good job afterwards. She has always supported me and makes sure i keep a balance." Noting the difficulty of being an ace in the classroom while also playing a school sport, Jimenez offered, "I'm really focused with my time and attention because it's a lot to juggle." Jimenez possesses an offer from Oberlin College in Ohio and he attended team camps this summer at Howard University, Brown University, Dartmouth College and Cornell University.

Juan Jimenez, his father, is a former linebacker at California in the 1990s who now coaches AAU track and is lauded by his son as an important factor in pushing his son towards success.

Other influential figures in the life of Jimenez include his cousins Mariya Moore and Minyon Moore. Mariya went to Louisville then transferred to USC while Minyon started at USC and then transferred to Oregon. "I was at their games watching and learning. Their dad is Errol Moore and he coached his daughters when they played AAU. He played baseball when he was younger. His being there for be was was important." Plus, Jimenez also lauded Coach Bryan Thomasson of his Work Hard Play Hard AAU travel team "for pushing my to be my best on and off the court. He believed in me."

Improvements

The younger Jimenez worked on his long-distance shooting this spring and summer, acquiring that status of being a knockdown three-point shooter. "I really worked on that, taking up to 1,000 shots a day in the gym." He also possesses a 34.5 inch standing vertical.

Regarding leadership, he said, "I'm a very competitive person and I'll use my words in getting on teammates when the effort isn't there but I also lead by example."

Best Memories

Three hoop memories stand out the most for him. "Beating Harvard-Westlake (one of the premiere southern California high school teams) this summer" (Jimenez buried four free throws in the last 1:21 to secure the victory in the championship game of the first annual Cali Live tournament), "taking down San Ramon Valley High two years ago (49-47) to win the NCS as the stands were packed and it was fever-pitched" and "winning against Pinole Valley High last January. We know each other well and there was a lot of talking back and forth."

Jimenez sees himself as a combo guard collegiately but is most attracted to being in the thick of the action offensively and defensively at the point.

The size and athletic ability are there, his academics are amazing as is his defensive effectiveness, and his improved shooting range will be on display this winter. Can a school, local, regional or elsewhere, lure him away from his high academic suitors? As always, speculation will flourish but only time and Jimenez will tell.

Davis was born in Great Britain. He grew up there and learned how to play the sport of basketball on his local courts. Then in an effort to set himself up for a more successful college career, Davis came to America for high school. He spent two seasons at FBA where he helped his team to a Regional Championship and earned Player of the Year honors. Davis averaged 24 points per game this past season.

“He has the athleticism, number one,” Florida Southwestern men’s basketball head coach Eric Murphy said. “Number two, he has the ability to shoot the basketball...”

Meeting Michael Turner

6-foot-5 Michael Turner fashioned a collection of positives during his three-year varsity tenure at Marin Catholic High, averaging 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists his senior season in 2004-05. Playing for Coach Rick Winter, he earned third team all-state status and was named San Francisco Chronicle North Bay Player of the Year. Turner is Marin Catholic's all-time leader in points (1,423) and rebounds (968).

He then spent a successful year at West Valley College in 2005-06 as the Vikings amassed an extraordinary 33-4 overall record and advanced to the California State Championship finals before falling to undefeated Fullerton College.

After that freshman season, Turner signed with the University of Hartford, a D1 program back in Connecticut, and in his initial 29 games and 24 starts, he averaged 5.7 points and 5.2 rebounds while distributing 62 assists and nabbing 43 steals.

As a junior in 2007-08, he posted averages of 8.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists, shooting 48% from the floor and earning a spot on the America East All-Defensive Team. Turner became the first player in Hartford’s Division I history to finish with more than 200 points, 150 rebounds, 100 assists and 50 steals in a season. His 72 steals both led the conference and broke the school record.

In his senior season, Turner upped his averages to 11.2 points and 6.2 boards and later played overseas in Germany for a couple of years.

He now works as an Associate Director/Director of Player Development at the North Bay Basketball Academy, an entity established and operated by Rick Winter and now including his son Brock to prepare Marin and Sonoma County youth in basketball skills and fundamentals.

We talked with Turner recently in a lively conversation that covered a variety of subjects.

"I wish I had a prep year back in my time," Turner said, "even though my experience at West Valley College was great. He played for well-regarded West Valley College Head Coach Danny Yoshikawa (who formerly assisted at St. Mary's) and assistant Julius Hicks who also played at West Valley and then Oregon, and later assisted at  West Valley College, Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine, Cal State Northridge, Stanford and Pepperdine. A prep year would have allowed Turner to retain four years of eligibility, thus increasing his recruiting attractiveness.

Exodus

Turner claims no any credit for a greater number of Marin, Sonoma and Nor Cal talents heading back East after he broke the ice but it is a fact. "There was Morgan Sabia (out of Drake High) who came to Hartford, Oliver McNally (out of The Branson School) who spent four years at Harvard, Drake U'u (out of Rio Americano High ) who played at Hartford and then Cal Poly and Christian Cavanaugh (out of Tamalpais High) who went a bit north to Maine and then later Montana State. "I wasn't the reason for the change but perceptions of Marin County prospects became altered and recruiting budgets also got larger."

Regarding his present role with the North Bay Basketball Academy, Turner explained, "our goal is to see that Marin County players succeed. So many kids now are way more skilled than me because they had early access to basketball skills training and physical training. I didn't hear the phrase 'hit the weights' until I entered college."

He continued, "social media is both a blessing and a curse. It's an advantage if used the right way because coaching staffs can look at kids all over the country but forget the notion that highlight films get players scholarships. That doesn't happen."

About both recruiting and transferring to another school, Turner said, "you can't get mad when players transfer. It's a business where each party (coach, player, family) has to make a decision on what's best. The NIL changes the landscape but at least the money involved with that is above board. My biggest fear is the ranking of young children, like second graders, something I came across the other day."

Adjustments

As for himself, Turner explained, "My biggest adjustment in college is I took on a different role once I got to Hartford. I learned quickly that getting closer to the basket doesn't necessarily make for an easier shot. It's just part of the process of adapting. You have to have patience and focus on doing what is going to keep you on the floor."

Turner admittedly, "got out of my comfort zone" in heading to the Nutmeg State. "I got to experience New York and Boston and what attending the Belmont Stakes is like. I even found my wife out there."  Comfort zone residence is ultimately idiosyncratic as some players take to the challenge or it becomes too much for others who feel it is enough to deal with the elements of attending college and playing basketball at the new and more competitive level without being 3,000 miles away from home and often also experiencing a different culture.

To his prospects, Turner stresses using basketball to better oneself and the critical need to have an inner conversation about what situation is best: going to school X and the possibility of playing 5-10 minutes any given year in one location or choosing school Y and playing 15-20 in another?

Another must-do task, according to Turner, is "getting the right people into your corner giving you good advice. Having an inner circle that has your best interests foremost is critical to success."

Rather than blame a head coach or the entire coaching staff when things don't go right or as planned for a player, Turner understands that "it's a tough balance between winning and player development for a coach." His measuring stick is "you can trust a coach if he holds you accountable and has your back."

Although there are many factors to consider when in a position to sign on with a four-year college coach, Turner stresses one of the most essential factors to determine is how many years are left on his contract. "I always perform my due diligence on that one," Turner explained.

Anyone who doesn't seek answers during recruiting is flying blindly through the process. It's enough of a roll of the dice to be an active participant and attempting to control the often controllable. Turner offers valuable advice, a blueprint of sorts for those seeking answers.

Justin Milch Heading to the Midwest

Justin (Terra Nova High/College of San Mateo) Milch heads out real soon for college (try a couple of days), his recently announced choice being Holy Cross College in Indiana, and he'll be playing basketball this winter for Coach Mike McBride's NAIA-affiliated Saints. According to Milch, Holy Cross led pretty much all along (after reaching out in the beginning of summer) but he made his mind up recently. "I took a virtual visit, talked with my family and coaches and eventually decided to make it official."

The Milch family has participated in collegiate athletics over the decades so he was well-served by holding these familial discussions surrounding his recruitment. His grandfather played football at UCLA, his father played basketball at Humboldt State and his older brother Jared played baseball at D1 Stony Brook University (New York).

Family, Plus One

As for influences, Milch cited "my Dad who has been my coach my whole life, a role model in sports, academics and life for me. Plus, my Mom and my brothers. (College of San Mateo Coach) Mike Marcial gives off such great energy on and off the court."

What will Saints fans witness when Milch takes to the court? As Coach Marcial explained, “Justin is going to provide instant scoring to the Saints this upcoming season. His basketball intelligence and skill will give him a great opportunity to make an immediate impact. He has an incredible ability to get his shot off the dribble and catch."

Marcial added, "Justin is also a pesky defender on the ball and will sacrifice his body defensively to help his team win. The Saints are getting one heck of a guard!”

"I'll most likely be playing mostly as an off-the-ball guard," Milch explained. Forsaking the term leadership, Milch said, "I have the ability to become one with my teammates, I'm a team guy. Everyone has a role and it needs to be followed to a T to have the best chance of being successful."

He averaged 8.8 points per game in 30 contests this season, shooting 40%, 35% and 80% respectively.

Milch focused on kinesiology at San Mateo but that's not officially on the books as a major by Holy Cross so he'll decide on his major once a determination is made on which of his classes transfer over. One plus is Holy Cross College has an academic connection with University of Notre Dame, a fellow in-town school, allowing Holy Cross students to enroll in certain Notre Dame class offerings. Possessing a 3.62 grade point average, Milch is ready for any level of academic rigor.

Regarding his best basketball moments, Milch offered, "winning a high school championship at Terra Nova in my senior COVID year. It took four years but I finally got it." He added, "taking down some of the top-seeded state title contenders" while at College of San Mateo." That included a 69-64 victory over high-ranked San Jose City College this season.

To the question of why basketball for him and not some other sports, he said, "basketball has been part of my life since I was three and now I'm 20. That's 17 years. When I'm on the court, nothing else matters. I just love the sound of the ball bouncing."

Now he'll be hearing that sweet sound in the middle of this country.

The Field of 68 Daily: "AJ Dybantsa is headed to the West Coast to join Prolific Prep in Napa, CA, located thousands of miles away from Brockton (MA). But he’s keeping his East-Coast mindset: “East Coast basketball is better than West Coast. It’s more grittier and tougher over here, but more skilled over there.”

The 6-foot-7 Dybantsa is either the top talent in 2026 or a very close second

Sacramento State Men's Basketball: "Welcome to the family Mike Wilson!

2026 Talent Elias Amanor Obenyah Already Impressing

The most tangible influence in the life of Salesian Prep's 6-foot-3 2026 Elias Amanor Obenyah has never coached a basketball game, nor scored scored a single point. It's a certified public accountant, his father, a native of Ghana.

"He's really hardworking and really wants the best for me," Elias said. The impact of his father is also a reason a business-related major, although still unspecified, will be the direction Elias eventually takes academically in college. But on the flip side and in being fair, "my Mom keeps me grounded and is really encouraging" so it's a double team on Elias and he wouldn't want it any other way.

Obenyah also credited "the coaches at Salesian Prep who know all the extra things I need to do." That list is headed by Head Coach Bill Mellis plus Assistant Andre Clarke, Assistant David Jobe, Assistant Ed Foster, Assistant Mario Dunn, Assistant Davion Mize and Assistant Justin Brown.

As for Obenyah's skill set, Paul Hernandez wrote about his play in the Pangos Premier event early in July: "he is a lengthy and skilled wing/guard that keeps relentless pressure on the defense and has the moves to score in creative ways around size in the paint. He has solid handles, the moves to get by his defender, does not waste dribbles and gets downhill to attack the defense, and has a variety of moves to score in the paint around and over size, as he uses his footwork and spin moves to shake opponents around the cup. Obenyah uses the long crossover to create separation on the perimeter, is effective with the perimeter shot off the dribble, and has great court vision to find open teammates in tight windows moving off the ball..."

In his summary of 2026 talents on display at this summer's Cali Live event, Justin Young wrote: "If there was a certified stud from the Cali Live camp last weekend in Orange County, it was Obenyah. He opened a lot of eyes and generated a lot of buzz with his play. The 6-foot-3 guard is tough inside the paint as a finisher. He's big and strong and tough enough to convert big boy buckets..."

Another telling element worth noting is Obenyah's penchant for watching film "so I don't make the same mistakes twice."

Regarding his leadership, an extra difficult aspect for an underclassmen to display, Obenyah offered, "I definitely think leadership is a mix of example and speaking up. I'm trying to develop vocalizing on and off the court."

Academically, he currently sports a 4.17 weighted grade point average despite the hours also required for his basketball participation.

With recruiting, "My preference is to stay close to home. I'm interested in schools with high academics not just high level athletics."

Obenyah's areas-to-work-on this summer included "talking more in games, my ballhandling and decision-making, my basketball IQ and a more consistent three-point shot."

He's has already won over the media scouts despite his young age.

Potpourri, Aug 16

From "Who is the X-factor for Illinois Basketball?"

"...Coleman Hawkins has been a polarizing figure while at Illinois. Hawkins cares a lot about success, and he has a skillset that is perfect for the next level. Fans have grown to love his passion and honesty with the media. Coleman’s biggest hurdle during his three years has been consistency. He’s the kind of player that will put up a triple double against Syracuse, and then have 6 turnovers and shoot 0-6 from the 3 against Missouri. Coleman has to show that he’s decisive and confident in his scoring skills. I think a big reason that he struggles with this is that he is sometimes relied to initiate offense.

This is why RayJ Dennis was such a huge miss. Shannon Jr and Hawkins would not have to create offense as much, which ultimately would have benefited their games. Hawkins has to be more consistent and shoot the ball better. During his three years at Illinois, he has never shot better than 30% from the 3pt line. If he can improve this number and his 60% free throw percentage, Illinois will have a better chance at being elite, which ultimately would have benefited their games. Hawkins has to be more consistent and shoot the ball better."

The 6-foot-10 Hawkins attended Antelope High and Prolific Prep.

Zander Jimenez: "Thank you Coach Brian Earl, Associate Head Coach Jon Jaques, Assistant Coach Max Ginsberg  I had a great time @ cornell_mbb."

Jimenez is a 6-foot-3, 2024 talent at Salesian Prep possessing a 4.57 grade point average.

--------------------

From Paul Hernandez at the Pangos Premier 80 held on July 6:

(2025 6’2 Jaylen Valdez (Capital Christian/Sacramento CA)

"Valdez is a combo guard that scores in volume from 3-levels and has the moves to create his own offense, as well as make plays for others. Valdez keeps the ball on a string, has shifty moves to create separation from his opponent, makes great use of the crossover to get his defender off balance, gets downhill once by his man, and is a creative scorer around the basket. Valdez has the moves to create his own perimeter shots off the dribble, is a 3-level scoring threat, and is fastly rising as one of the better 2025 Norcal prospects. Valdez is a solid on-ball defender, gets into his opponent’s dribbling space, and generates turnovers, which lead to instant offense in the open court."

--------------------

Bjorn Ryning: "After a great call with Coach Danzig I am grateful to receive an offer from Pratt Institute! Thank you to the coaching staff for believing in me."

Ryning is a 6-foot-6 2024 talent out of Redwood High in Larkspur.

He stands 6-foot-3.

Grand View Men's Basketball: "We are excited to introduce our 2023 recruiting class - starting with Ra'Shjon Martinez. "Ray is an excellent defender and shooter who loves to compete on both ends of the floor. He’s been a winner his entire career and we know he will continue that here at GV. " - Coach Schaefer."

With Vallejo as his home town, Martinez is a 6-foot-3 guard coming over from Fort Lewis College in Colorado.

--------------------

Devin Aye: "Congrats to Trent Blackshire on signing his scholarship to Notre Dame College- Cleveland.  Trent was All-Conference on the '21-'22 Jags that finished 23-7, and will be transferring into NDC from Mayville State where he was All-Conference. Trent will be a senior at the NCAA D2!"

---------------------

  • UC Irvine

Nick Cubley Is Fun to Watch -- Not So Much to Play Against

Coming off his San Marin High (Novato) junior season in which he averaged 21.0 points, 5.8 boards, 3.9 assists and 3.1 steals while shooting 50% overall from the floor and 40% from three-point range, 6-foot-3, 180 Nick Cubley also honored his late cousin Robert Gaddini in fine fashion. Cubley switched from jersey #24 to #22 as a tribute after Gaddini died in an auto accident in 2021.

Picking out a pair of elements as his top offensive strengths, Cubley offered, "probably getting to the basket and my mid-range shooting." On-line video abounds of him challenging offenders when powering to the basket as well as demonstrating elusiveness during his dribble-drives.

Cubley came in short, sweet and direct with his answer as to why he chose basketball as his sporting direction. "Because you can play by yourself, it's you, the ball and the hoop." Unlike baseball, football and the like.

Recalling his best basketball moment as "a 45 point explosion," made all the sweeter because it came last January in a road contest versus crosstown rival Novato.

He sees himself as a leader on his teams, stating "I'm pretty vocal and will speak up when something goes wrong."

As for influences, Cubley cited "definitely both my older brother and my Dad." Curiously, his basketball matchups with his father concluded when "he came down with a bunch of injuries once I became bigger than him." Such driveway familial pairings typically end when a size differential favoring the son comes to the fore.

Included in the "influentials" group is Michael Turner, the former Marin Catholic High star who went on to play at Hartford from 2006-2009 and then overseas professionally. Turner is now a coach and a trainer in Marin County. "He has been a big help," Cubley explained, "working with me my whole life and he knows who I am as a player and a person."

"I've known Nick since he was a little guy," Turner said. "We're both Novato kids. He has a work ethic like none I've seen combined with slashing ability and a talent for getting to the rim.'

He continued, "Nick is a natural leader as his teammates gravitate towards him. With the kids I work with, I try to pass along a grand vision. I begin by asking what they want to do and what they are willing to do and I tell them what it will take. I don't sugarcoat anything." He provided a succinct example with "if you want to be a D1 guard you have to handle the rock and knock down the three."

Cubley also plays for Team Rampage and Coach Brandon Bracy in the spring and summer. As Bracy explained, "Nick is still under the radar but he had a phenomenal summer. He is super athletic -- D1 athleticism -- and plays similarly to (13-time NBA All Star) Dwyane Wade." Bracy offered that Menlo College, Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State have expressed interest.

Despite a youthful hoops roster, San Marin High finished third in the Marin County Athletic League last season. With a year's added experience, the Mustangs will "be one of the top teams in league in 2023-24," according to Cubley.

Regarding recruiting, Cubley is wide open but would love to land "somewhere on the West Coast."
