Brandon Gibson Jr., the Unsung Star of Sacramento

Gibson is glad to see you

6-foot-5, 185, 2024 prospect Brandon Gibson Jr. of Monterey Trail High is an anomaly, in a good way. The wing/guard can go inside with his strength and and punish smaller defenders. He can also enter the paint and out-quick those equal to him in size. He's simply a mismatch for almost every opponent.

Currently scoring 21.2 points, grabbing 6.7 rebounds and dishing out 4.9 assists per game, he's a multiple threat. Asked to detail his best skills on the court, Gibson Jr. offered, "my playmaking is best because I really like to get my teammates involved and I'm also a three-level scorer."

Gibson heading to the basket

It wasn't viewing any NBA or college stars that got him started but rather "watching my older cousins on the court and my Dad who played in high school" as influences. Add in "my peers" and that's his troika of influences getting him into hoops. What's interesting is the various football coaches who have attempted to persuade Gibson Jr. to switch over to the gridiron to no avail.

Gibson Jr. views himself as acting in a leading capacity on the court. "On my team, I see myself as a leader and I work to get the best out of my teammates. I go into every game to win."

Collegiately, the feedback he has received indicates he'll be positioned in the backcourt. "With my overall game and passing ability, I'll play the one and the two."

Taking aim at the free throw line

He cited his best basketball moment as "last year when we beat Grant (High) at the buzzer and won league with Grant." Both finished with 10-2 records. But Monterey Trail currently sports an unblemished 8-0 record and ranks third in the California Division One rankings. "We look good and we're trying to sweep league," Gibson Jr. said.

He offered thanks to "my Dad, my trainers, Coach Ryan and (his current head coach) Coach (Robert) Fields", for aiding him on his basketball journey.

Gibson is ready to make a move

As for recruiting, "Fresno Pacific, Northwest Nazarene (in Idaho) and Chico State are interested in me." Each has offered. Gibson Jr. is seeking to remain close enough to home so that family and friends can see him play. He will be majoring in kinesology with the hopes of becoming a physical therapist or an athletic trainer.

Seeing a young man beginning to receive the respect and attention he deserves makes this world just a little better.

Opinion

West Valley College basketball would still be a state title contender (rather than its current status of a 13-0 bulldozer) had Elijah Mahi actually moved on to Santa Clara University. Mahi signed with the Broncos but something happened and the 6-foot-6 sophomore forward, the best player on West Valley, ended up returning to the Vikings in that same status.

This season he is averaging 15.8 points in 13 games and starts. Mahi is shooting 52%, 47% and 69% respectively while grabbing 7.5 rebounds a contest and dishing out 5.2 assists an outing.

West Valley has faced two close calls thus far this season, winning in a San Diego tourney versus Fullerton 82-81 and topping host Fresno City College 80-67.

Will Mahi head back to Santa Clara after this season or head elsewhere? The answer on this subject has yet to publicly surface but he didn't sign in early November when the opportunity to do so was present.

Cal-Hi Sports Northern California Boys Player of the Week Nate Sweet (Union Mine, El Dorado)

We trek around 40-miles east of the state capitol to the Mother Lode area just south of Placerville on historic Highway 49, and we end up finding our Northern California Boys Player of the Week in El Dorado at Union Mine.

Sweet started last week with 28 points (three 3-pointers), seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 71-55 victory over Woodland Christian of Woodland. He finished the week on Saturday with 23 points (four 3-pointers), four rebounds and two assists in a 61-40 win over Sacramento Bradshaw Christian, and those are two pretty solid performances, but the sweetest game for Sweet last week, and the outing that earns him this statewide honor, is the game he sandwiched between the two.

On Friday, and in a 71-65 victory of West Campus of Sacramento, Sweet gave Diamondbacks’ fans a treat after burning the nets for 40 points, including seven 3-pointers, with an assist and a steal.

So far this season for 11-1 Union Mine and heading into a Tuesday night game on the road in Fair Oaks at Del Campo, the 6-foot-2 senior guard is averaging 24.2 points 6.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Sweet has also connected on 35 3-pointers. The 24.2 points per game average is a top 35 reported mark in the state and No. 4 in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section.

6-foot-8, 230 Dajon (Elk Grove High) Lott of Sacramento City College is putting up mighty impressive numbers and is another talent who should be prominently courted by the various mid-major D1 programs throughout northern California. Isaiah Ackerman Shines in the 831

Isaiah Ackerman leads his high school team

6-foot-4 Isaiah Ackerman plays his basketball primarily in Santa Cruz County so he's automatically downgraded since hoops and therefore hoopsters can't be of any substance in the 831. Not that he's taking anything personal but he's changing that perception just by being himself.

To refute the negative tag of being from Santa Cruz County (Aptos High), he plays for KP Potts' Team Arsenal in the spring and summer, beginning as a freshman after attending a tryout. Now he's on the 17s Elite squad alongside Gavin Ripp, Tyler Jones and Jordy McKenzie, all three already having earned college scholarships.

"Definitely getting downhill, finishing or feeding my teammates or pulling up because the defense thinks I'm going all the way." That's his response when asked to detail his best hoops skills. Watch any Ackerman video and it will be loaded with him powering like a rocket downcourt with defenders simply mere deterrents to speed by.

Isaiah Ackerman Class 2025

Aptos Coach Brian Bowyer offered, "I'm very impressed with the work Isaiah has put in since last season to improve his three-point and mid-range game. He now can attack teams from all three levels and has proven to be very difficult to contain. Isaiah also works very hard on the defensive side of the ball as he always guards the best player on the other team and leads us in blocks, steals and rebounds."

"I have a pretty good basketball IQ since I've been playing since second grade" Ackerman explained. Genetics likely has an undeterminable role In Ackerman's prowess on the court as his father played at Western Illinois University. The elder Ackerman earned a spot on the Mid-Cont All-Freshman team and made the All-Mid-Cont - Second Team as a soph. There is also a sister playing hoops at D1 Cal Poly.

If the defender goes high, Ackerman goes low

About being an influence on his team, Ackerman said, "yes, I'm a big leader. I get on people but I do it in the right way."

His best hoops moment came last year on senior night. "We beat rival Santa Cruz with four out of five of our starters out with Covid. Our bench players stepped up and we played our style of basketball." The contest ended with a 36-33 Aptos victory over an undefeated team.

Academics is another area where Ackerman excels as his 3.8 grade point average earned him honor roll status as well as a scholar-academic award.

Ackerman's versatility makes him an intriguing prospect

As for influences in his basketball journey, Ackerman said, "My Dad has helped me throughout the way."

His recruiting interactions have him believing he'll be used as a one or a two, a combo guard in college. "I can play on and off the ball. I'm better off the ball." As for any preferred geographic location, Ackerman offered, "I'm looking for the best opportunity for me." He is looking to major in kinesiology.

Opinion

Not to beat a dead horse (what a gruesome adage) but UCLA did it again. Last Tuesday, the Bruins fell 76-72 to Cal State Northridge after being down 40-26 at the half. Unsung hero 6-foot-7 Mahmoud Fofana didn't start but played 30 minutes and posted an 11 point, 13 rebound double-double. Out of Santa Teresa High, he played two years at West Valley College and then went on to play at Cal State San Bernardino -- he followed Coach Andy Newman to Northridge.. The Bruins play 7-4 Maryland next in a must win or they fall below .500.

.........................

One player standing out early is West Valley College's 6-foot-10  (no weight listed) freshman Shakir Odunewu. His important numbers: 10 outings, 17.0 points per game, 9.9 rebounds a contest (49 of 99 are offensive), shooting 57% overall, 72% from the foul line, he has yet to attempt a three, has nine blocked shots but doesn't foul a lot (10 games/21 fouls), very minimal assists (3) versus a high 26 turnovers.

A 6-foot-10, 245 pound big with name Shakiru Odunewu attended New Mexico State in 2022-23 before transferring. He attended Universal Academy  as did the player above but his hometown is Providence, Rhode Island, not Cairo, Egypt as West Valley lists it. He played in 19 games at 6.9 minutes a contest. There is a Universal Academy in Irving, Texas. So maybe it's the same player but he's dropped a 'u' from his first name or it's a typo. I do think it's the same player because he grabbed 40 rebounds, 25 on the offensive end, comparable to his West Valley ratio.

Keep a watch on this freshman West Valley prospect as every team needs a big big, especially San Jose State University, Santa Clara University, UC Davis, Pacific, USF, Sacramento State, Fresno State. He should not get out of Northern California.

Cal-Hi Sports Northern California Boys Basketball Player of the Week Jalen Stokes (Dublin) Jr.

We head to the Tri-Valley area of the East Bay portion of the CIF North Coast Section to find our Northern California Boys Player of the Week and it’s at Dublin High that we find our honoree.

The 6-foot-5 wing was considered one of the top sophomore recruits in Northern California and so far in his junior season Stokes has picked up right where he left off. We saw him in person at the NorCal Tip-Off Classic in the one game Dublin has lost in a 5-1 start, but even in that game, a 63-54 loss to St. Ignatius of San Francisco, Stokes was in our opinion the top player on the floor after finishing with a double-double 20 points and 12 rebounds despite drawing multiple defenders.

Last week, Stokes continued to stroke the basketball after leading his team to three wins and the tournament title at the Washington tournament in Fremont. Besides the Tip-Off Classic performance, it’s for his efforts in Fremont that has garnered him this statewide honor.

The tournament MVP went for 30 points, 16 rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 71-55 championship game victory over Amador Valley of Pleasanton. In the opening game against Mission San Jose of Fremont, Stokes had 22 points, eight rebounds and four steals in a 94-42 victory. In a semifinal 93-42 victory over Livermore, and in limited play, he had 12 points, six rebounds and five steals. To start the week and before the tournament began, he played around a half of a 94-49 victory over Hayward, but still had team highs of 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.

So far this season, and with his play limited in the lopsided wins, Stokes is averaging 20.0 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.

Opinion

Saw UCLA versus Villanova a week or so ago and, besides being rather boring, I was shocked at the lack of talent on the Bruins squad. Yes, UCLA. Besides big Adem Bona, there were no ready to move on NBA prospects. Their guard play was labored and nondescript. There were no must-stay-with dead-eye shooters. Everything was labored. UCLA has lost every 'big' game thus far this season, losing to Marquette by two and Gonzaga by four, Ohio State by seven and Villanova by nine. Their wins: beating St. Francis, Long Island, Chaminade, Lafayette and UC Riverside (66-65!!!) This ain't your mama's UCLA. There must be some heat being generated under Mick Cronin's behind in Westwood.

*** Just saw that UCLA lost to Cal State Northridge 76-72 last night!!! Make that a bonfire under Mick Cronin.

Former CCSF talent EJ Neal is struggling with his shooting thus far this season at Idaho. To his credit, he does have eight steals (one per game) and five blocked shots. He'll pick it up.

.........................

In a December 16th 68-59 loss with UC Santa Barbara, Alex Mirkviladze led Loyola Marymount with both 18 points and nine boards. The 6-foot-8 former Modesto Christian talent is averaging 11.4 points and 5.7 rebounds on the season. He bailed from a disastrous Cal State Northridge program after his freshman season.

.........................

Former UC Davis talent Ezra (Heritage High) Manjon is leading Vanderbilt in scoring this season at 16.1 points per game as well as assists (27) and steals (10). He has played and started in seven games and is on the court for 30 minutes a contest. The Commodores are 4-6. We knew he would be good but didn't see him leading the team! Too bad he didn't go with a better program.

.........................

"Zander Jimenez for the Defense"

At 6-foot-3, he's the best defender in the Bay Area. He stays in good defensive position all 94 feet. Coaches talk all the time about wanting toughness plus guys who can defend. Jimenez brings both. Let's see if those words and that sentiment gets backed up by a righteous offer.

News Bits

Out of the Sacramento area, 6-foot-4 Ben Roseborough has committed to San Jose State University. After attending Monterey Trail High, he went to two prep schools, one in Arizona and then the other in Colorado. The Spartans offered him way back in September 2022, Roseborough took an official visit on December 12, 2023 and he committed on December 13, 2023. Recruiting began with Assistant Coach Ben Johnson (now departed), then Coach Tim Miles stayed on Roseborough.

How did SJSU land such a talented scorer and passer, with a college ready body? A series of injuries has kept Roseborough sidelined with the big time programs who were once interested (including UCLA) bailing.  When a top level prospect is sidelined, they just move on to another five star talent. There is no patience or waiting.

Roseborough's the best recruit in the last 20 years or so for the Spartans and will be an immediate starter next season. He has an NIL deal with Lead Athletic Performance, a gym located in Roseville.

The biggest question is once Roseborough is fully healthy and playing like he did earlier (an IF at this point), can the Spartans keep him? NIL dollars may get attractive and going pro might even be an option. Yes, you read that right.

"West Valley is at top for fifth straight week"

Yes, it's early but it's beginning to get difficult in seeing anyone taking down West Valley. Fullerton came close 82-81 in a tournament in San Diego. San Diego City College lost by seven at home 77-70. Also at home, Chabot was down by just six points at the half before losing by 11, 77-66.

CCSF hosts West Valley on January 5 and Coach Justin Labagh will have his guys ready but the Rams don't appear to be as dominant as past years. Undefeated Cabrillo comes to West Valley on January 17.

Theo Lamb Finds a Fit

6-foot-8, 220 Theo Lamb of St. Ignatius College Prep knows where he is going and what he is getting into with his choice of Babson College in Massachusetts.

The heralded Babson hoops mentor Stephen Brennan is in his 29th year with the DIII program so he isn't going anywhere soon. The team wins a lot more games than it loses and a culture of success is ingrained in the players. Plus, the team's offense is run through the center position which is where Lamb will likely be positioned so he'll be playing a pivotal role for his team which won a national championship in 2017.

So how did Lamb connect with Babson being 3,000 miles apart? It all began with a text from Brennan to Lamb. The latter stayed in touch and took two summer visits and one in the fall to see the campus and explore the strong academics of the Little Ivy school which was founded in 1919 and has less than 3,000 students, and the hoops program.

The Wall Street Journal recently named Babson the 10th Best College in the United States and No. 1 in career preparation as well as for the 27th consecutive time, U.S. News & World Report named Babson College the No. 1 undergraduate school for entrepreneurship.

"The coaches were great and I saw myself being part of an strong academic program that would lead to getting the job I want." With basketball, "I don't play for myself. I can shoot the ball but I like passing and getting everyone involved." That philosophy is in alignment with the Babson offense.

Lamb will be enrolled in Babson's business school which requires two years of learning the basics before settling on a specific direction which will likely be marketing for Lamb. He sports a 3.7 grade point average and he has taken AP and college classes.

Giving Thanks

So how did Lamb reach the level in basketball of being recruited and earning a scholarship? "My Dad played an important role in aiding me during my rehabilitation from injuries. He swam at UC Davis. Plus, I've trained with Bryan Thomasson and Aidan Coffino since the third grade. They have taught me so much as has St. Ignatius Coach Jason Greenfield."

Regarding leadership, Lamb is a captain at SI and "I try to get my teammates talking and I'll do things like jogging between drills as an example for others to emulate."

As to why the choice of basketball, Lamb offered, "my Dad didn't press me to play any one sport. Early on, I played some baseball but found it kind of slow and some soccer but I liked the fast pace of basketball."

Best Moments

Asked to detail his best basketball moments, Lamb cited last year's Bruce-Mahoney matchup between Sacred Heart and Saint Ignatius. "We killed" in a 78-58 victory, according to Lamb. He also noted a Bay City AAU game against a Utah team where the latter scored on a tough layup late in the game but "Jake Rodriguez came down, passed to me in the corner and I hit a game-winning three. My team mobbed me."

He's looking to perform similar feats for Babson.

5-foot-10 senior Darrion (St. Ignatius) Trammell is struggling with his shooting this season although he hit an important shot the other night late in a San Diego State game. The G League looks like the next step in his basketball journey.

.........................

6-foot-10 Illinois senior Coleman (Antelope High/Prolific Prep) Hawkins has played in six games at 27 minutes a contest and is shooting 33%, 21% and 75% with just eight free throw attempts thus far and averaging 6.8 points and 5.5 rebounds alongside 8 blocked shots.
