Michael (West High/Las Positas College/Chico State) Hayes and his Antelope Valley teammates overcome many obstacles—including their college closing down—to win the CalPac Conference championship 99-76 on Monday. As usual, Hayes' contributions loomed large (on eight shots he totaled 15 points, grabbed six rebounds and was credited with 2 steals.)

The senior Hayes also earned conference Player of the Year honors as he also did last season.

Out of American Canyon High, Stanislaus State's John Wade is the CCAA Player of the Week.

"...Scott Waterman led his Academy of Art squad to its first PacWest regular season title this year, earning his second PacWest Coach of the Year award. Waterman, in his fifth season in San Francisco, also won the Coach of the Year award in 2021-22, the same season that the Urban Knights won the PacWest tournament. Waterman has guided ART U to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances as they look to make it three in a row in 2023-24. He now has a career record of 77-58 with the Urban Knights..."

It's not too often that any community college program receives game writeups in two separate area newspapers.

The Claim Jumpers guard then provided 25 points, six rebounds and five assists in an 88-84 victory over very tough Sacramento State. 

The Columbia College guard earned MVP honors for his play in the Central Valley Conference this season. Jordan averaged 15.2 points, 7.5 assists and 4.4 rebounds.

Brown also picked up a CalPac All Defensive team honor.

NCAA scores, Wednesday, Mar 6

  • Kentucky 93, Vanderbilt 77 full box score. Ezra (Heritage High/UC Davis) Manjon scored 17 points, earned seven assists and grabbed four rebounds.
  • Utah State 90, San Jose State University 70 full box score. Myron (Vacaville High/Scotland Prep) Amey Jr. led the Spartans with 20 points and teammate Alvaro Cardenas posted an 18 point, 10 rebound double-double.
  • Lamar 78, Houston Christian 68 full box score Marcus (Archbishop Mitty/Scotland Prep/Sacramento State/Panola College)  Greene enjoyed 17 points and seven boards, the latter despite standing a mere 6-foot-2. Note the basketball context.

  • Pepperdine 102, Pacific 43 full box score. The score was 56-9 at halftime. Pacific shot 25%, 22% and 59% respectively. 
  • UC Davis 70, UC San Diego 63 full box score. Elijah Pepper led UCD with 28 points.
  • Stanford 80, California 58 full box score. What happened? This should have been much closer.
