News Bits

Cal Poly has fired basketball coach John Smith, although he will coach the final three games for the Mustangs. Smith has remained classy despite the perennial difficulties in winning games in San Luis Obispo. He is currently 26-89 in four seasons.

Granted, there are  a finite number of D1 head coach positions, let alone those that come available each post-season but the question needing to be asked is can anyone win/succeed at Cal Poly?

Previously, Joe Callero was fired after ten seasons in San Luis Obispo. He had two winning seasons, finishing with an overall 126-184 record.

Callero took over from Kevin Bromley who compiled a 99-145 record, with three winning seasons in eight years.

Maybe Cal Poly needs to return to the D2 California Collegiate Athletic Association?

Might Chico State's Greg Clink have interest in moving to San Luis Obispo? But would Clink see something beyond a coach-killing program? Also, Coach Perry Webster of Fullerton College is a SoCal local who has enjoyed a tremendous run in Orange County.
