Ahmad Jeffries Is a Plus Shooter & Defender

Jeffries celebrating another success

6-foot-3 sophomore Ahmad Jeffries is really different. We all are certainly to various degrees but he carries his personal singularity over to his chosen profession. Attending Columbia College in Sonora, his total of 107 made treys this season (on 39% accuracy) led the California community college ranks. That feat obviously stands out but he uniquely paired it with 76 steals. It's extremely rare that shooters in basketball are also plus defenders and certainly not to the degree of Jeffries' brilliance. Add in a well-rounded 110 rebounds and 76 assists and his contributions on the court stand out even more. He earned Central Valley Conference First Team honors.

Why is Jeffries so radiant in his shooting and pilfering the ball? His accuracy from long distance is a talent that he has possessed since a young age. "I was inspired by (NBA players) Steph Curry, Trae Young and James Harden and I led the state of North Carolina in made threes as a high school junior and senior." He credits his steals totals to "taking pride on defense plus my IQ and awareness." Anyone watching him play will note the high number of deflections he creates and he often turns those into grabbing possession of the ball.

A participant in each of the major sports as a youth, every one but basketball eventually dropped away. Why? "Basketball stuck to me and (the late) Kobe Bryant has been my favorite athlete for as long as I can remember."

Jeffries at the foul line

As for influences, Jeffries noted "my Uncle L who I first went to watch play basketball when I was three or four and that's when I got the idea of going professional. Plus, my grandfather Larry Jeffries who played college football.

To a question about leadership, Jeffries offered, "Yes, I am a leader on the team. Coach (Rob Hoyt) came to us (the few returning sophomores) and said we needed to work on leading because we had so many new guys.? So what does Jeffries do? "I use my high energy and positive feedback to keep my teammates up but you have to know your teammates first and how they react to what."

Jeffries dribbling to the hoop

Regarding a best basketball moment, Jeffries explained, "I have quite a few." He chose "my game-winning shot when I was a senior in high school. It was a home game and we played a good team and hung in there until the end. I had a couple of cousins run on the court after the game because they were so excited."

Jeffries specifically wanted to "offer thanks to my Mom, for sure, because it was just me and her growing up" although he noted his grandparents and an aunt and uncle as being in their lives." Also, "I appreciate my girlfriend for supporting me through my journey as well."

With recruiting, "I'll go where the best opportunity is" but he added "it would be nice to play on the East Coast to see family."

He'll graduate this spring with a, A.A. degree in Social Sciences and that is the area in which he wants to earn his B.A.

Jeffries maneuvering to the basket once more

About where he sees himself positioned on the court at the next level, Jeffries said, "I assume off the ball. I'll hunt threes because I shoot them at a pretty good position." He used the phrase 'three and D' as his coin of the realm on the court.

Who can't use a high level long distance marksman who is also a plus on the defensive end?

Interesting choice. Pacific should become a major player for Canadian prospects.

Verbal Commits: "Saint Mary's F Joshua Jefferson has entered the transfer portal."

This is unusual as Randy Bennett rarely has transfers out of his program. A 6-foot-8 sophomore, Jefferson was a starter until he suffered a season-ending injury. He played 25 minutes a night, averaged 10.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 47% overall. He'll be coveted. Maybe he wanted to be featured more or is pursuing NIL dollars.

Leo Ricketts Offers Wise Words

Ricketts setting up to bury a free throw

Leo Ricketts, a 6-foot senior at De La Salle (DLS), has worked to hone his point guard package of skills, understands but better yet lives the critical components involved in the art of leadership, is both intellectually and emotionally intelligent and can shoot and pass with the best. He is what any coach desires in meshing with teammates via smarts and humility.

Genetically, Ricketts should be found living life on a soccer pitch. Both his parents excelled at the sport and his mother even received an offer to turn professional. Besides basketball, as well as track (the jumping events), baseball and football, he played the sport, but veered away from it when he entered high school because it lost his attention. Soccer's loss became basketball's gain because the latter "is action-packed."

Asked to detail what he does best in the hoops realm, Ricketts offered "my shooting ability off the dribble and the catch. I'm more athletic than advertised so I'm a very good penetrator, good at making reads and at the rim. Opponents respect me as a scorer but I take care of the ball and I'm an underrated passer. I have a 2.5/1 assist-to-turnover ratio." He wasn't sure if the following qualified as a skill (it does). "I play hard and compete hard."

Ricketts looking over to the DLS bench

Equally as important, he fully gets 'it' in leading a team. "Leaders have to be vocal—you can't be quiet." But he also used a phrase—“silent power”—as a critical ingredient in leading by example. "When you're working hard and playing hard, it trickles down to those surrounding you." A De La Salle captain, Ricketts also went in a third direction surrounding the subject. "It's hard to say leader. I don't want to appear selfish or make it seem like I'm above any of my teammates. We're peers. I have to make sure I have a great relationship with them so that they will understand I'm not talking down to them. It's not criticism but all about doing what will help us succeed as a team."

Ricketts cited two situations as his best basketball moments. "The first game this season when we beat Centennial (a power program in southern California) 62-51." He scored 21 points and earned Player of the Game honors. His second choice being "our last home game this season against Branson. They're a great team and all personal goals were out of the way. We were competing with guys you love to win with as a team." 25-6 De La Salle grabbed a 62-54 victory against a program that finished 23-8.

Ricketts honored as Player of the Game

As for important hoops influences, Ricketts appeared profoundly impacted with the effect of his initial selection. "For sure, the DLS (basketball) alumni who come back each summer to work camps and help out current players and kids. They had a dramatic impact on me as mentors when I was growing up."

So much so that in answering where he sees himself 15-20 years from now, he said, "I don't know what career I'll be in but I want to be serving other people like I've been served. I want it to be bigger than myself, whether it's basketball related or not."

Ricketts also lauded his parents as influential due to being "very good mentors. They were hands off in letting us (he and his brothers including one is is now polevaulting for Cornell) choose our sports but really helped with the mental aspects like self talk and how to carry yourself."

Ricketts after another successful run versus top competition

A four time annual scholar athlete award winner at De La Salle, Ricketts isn't sure what he will major in at the next level. "I'm interested in psychology and special effects and animation in movies.

Regarding recruiting, Ricketts is wide open geographically. "I don't care where I end up. We have a lot of family in Oregon and I like the rain. My brother is in college in New York."

Any college coach will be getting the package of Ricketts the player and person. Good player and good person.

Anyway, Smith will be facing far mightier competition (North Carolina followed by North Carolina State and then Duke the following week) but Stanford recruiting should have an uptick. Look for some of Stanford's recent portal transfer entries to return now that Smith is in place.

Blake Bastani Heeding 'Go East, Young Man'

Blake Bastani attended a basketball camp last July in Los Angeles. Little did he know at the time that his life was about to change dramatically. "I played pretty well,"he recalled. Apparently so because New Hampton School (New Hampshire) Assistant Coach Ky Feldman sat in attendance and approached Bastani during a break. The two began talking. The more Bastani listened, the more he liked what he heard.

All that talk has resulted in Bastani set to enroll at New Hampton School this fall as well as playing for the New Hampton prep squad which plays a high level coast-to-coast basketball schedule. The program has produced nine NBA players with 25 current collegians being New Hampton graduates.

"I visited in the fall and liked what I saw," Bastani recalled. "I'll be living on campus, the school is good and everyday I'll be going up against D1 level recruits in practice." The formidable competition will be a beneficial challenge as it forces a player to both hone his present skill set plus add to it, meaning get better in order to earn and keep playing time.

Not to be overlooked is it says a lot about Bastani as a player, student and person that a school and basketball program 3,000 miles away made the decision to invest time and money in him.

Another positive for Bastani is having multiple Division 1 schools reaching out to him recently with lots of interest.

However, Bastani will be back home this summer playing for the Oakland Soldiers team on the Nike circuit, providing opportunities to see him play on one of the Bay Area's premier travel teams.

To a question about what his current wardrobe looks like considering winter temperatures in New Hampshire, Bastani laughed and said "I'll be adding a few jackets before I go." That and probably a few new assets to his skill set.

Warren Sharp: "this is the worst foul call I’ve ever seen"

Go right here and I think you'll agree. Did the ref blink too long? Did he for some reason get flustered? He never saw any contact, just reacted to the clumsiness of the player with the ball. Maybe his thought process was 'nobody could be that dorky, he must have been tripped, or something.'

News Bits

Florida is the #7 seed in the South Region and will face either Boise State or Colorado on Friday. That faceoff will give Zyon (College Park High/UC Riverside) Pullin his first Big Dance appearance.

Chance (St. Patrick-St.Vincent/Bethel High/Golden State Prep) McMillian is going back  to the Big Dance. He transferred to Texas Tech after three years at Grand Canyon and the Lone Star Staters are a sixth seed in the South Region versus #11 seed North Carolina State. But this isn't something new as McMillian as Grand Canyon earned a March Madness invite in 2021. Two times in his college career — what are the odds?

Talk about odds. Senior Coleman Hawkins is with #3 Illinois. The Illini will face #13 Morehead State in the East Region on Thursday. Coach Brad Underwood's crew has enjoyed four straight trips to the Big Dance so its old hat.
