Wednesday, Nov 29, NCAA scores

San Jose State University 82, Long Beach State 66 box. SJSU kicked sand in the faces of the Long Beach State program after being tied at 34 late in the first 20 minutes. The Spartans have a three-game winning streak.

California 81, Mercyhurst 55 box. 6-foot-1 freshman Jeremiah Wilkinson did it again with a team best 25 points for the Bears. He shot 9-12, 6-8 and 1-2 respectively.

Pacific 83, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 71 box. As expected, Elijah Fisher was in the lead for the host Tigers with 28 points. 6-foot-7 teammate Elias Ralph also played large and efficient with 18 points (5-9 overall shooting, 0-2 on treys and 8-8 at the foul line), 13 boards, seven assists and a pair of blocked shots. For APB, 6-foot-5 Dante (McAteer High/Antioch High/Salesian Prep/CCSF/North Idaho CC) Sawyer ended with 16 points, five rebounds, two steals and two assists. He shot 6-10, 2-3 and 2-2 respectively and likely had family in the stands.

Sacramento State 63, Air Force 61 box. EJ (CCSF/Idaho) Neal and Julian (St Joseph Notre Dame/CCSF/Chico State/U of Alberta) Vaughns each paced the Hornets with 12 points.

Incarnate Word 76, Western Illinois 75 box. Wing Dylan (Healdsburg High) Hayman scored 17 points, shooting 7-12, 2-3 and 1-1 respectively for the victors.

Oregon 78, San Diego State 68 box. BJ (Modesto Christian High) Davis led the Aztecs with 18 points in the losing cause.

Thursday, Nov 30, NCAA scores

Santa Clara 69, Texas Christian 52 box. SC won both 20 minute sessions in taking down a team with a winning record as guard Carlos Stewart led the success with 18 points. Teammate Elijah (West Valley College) Mahi scored 13 points and 6-foot-9 Jake Ensminger had a unique contribution having missed all three treys he attempted and scoring zero points but leading the Broncos with both 11 rebounds and five assists.

Washington 73, Colorado State 67 box. 6-foot-8 sophomore Tyler (Newark Memorial High/Salesian Prep/Granada High/Portland) Harris paced the Huskies with 24 points (9-13 overall shooting, 5-8 on treys) and tied for the team lead in boards with eight.

St. Mary's 71, USC 32 box. In a weird one, the Gaels came damn close to doubling up on the Trojans, scoring a progressive 32 and then 39 points while USC was regressive at 21 and 15. Coach Eric Musselman's guys shot 13-50 overall and an even more ghastly 0-12 from long distance. Hard to believe Muss is 60 years old. Probably feels like 90 after this one.

On Wednesday, Academy of Art stopped host Cal State Stanislaus 66-62 as Jeremiah (Salesian Prep) Jones packaged up 15 points, seven boards, six assists and three steals but it still wasn't enough for CSS to prevail.

Also on Wednesday, this one in San Rafael, 5-foot-11 redshirt sophomore Jaden Tengan played 32 minutes, scored 32 points and also grabbed five rebounds alongside dishing out five assists in Cal State Monterey's 78-68 success against Dominican University. Tengan's hometown is Sacramento and he played AAU ball with Team Arsenal.

Another Wednesday pairing found Menlo College besting host UC Santa Cruz 75-58 with 6-foot-9 Landon (Wood High) Seaman totaling 26 points plus eight boards and 6-foot-6 teammate Julius (Serra High/Skyline College) Alcantara finishing with a team high nine boards as well as 10 points on 5-5 shooting. Andrew (West Campus High/Sacramento City College) Ferrara-Jones tallied 14 points for the Banana Slugs.

..........................

Ben (College Park High/Diablo Valley College) Tellez has continued doing what Ben Tellez does: shoot the ball accurately. Having signed with Cal Lutheran, the 6-foot-2 guard has played 19 minutes a game in the first four contests and he is averaging 7.8 points an outing on 48%, 36% and 7-7 on free throws.

6-foot-8, 190 sophomore Tyler (Newark Memorial High/Salesian Prep/Granada High/Portland) Harris is in Seattle this season and averaging a team high 14.2 points per game in five contests, two starts and just below 29 minutes an outing. He is shooting 54%, 43% and 79% respectively. Harris is grabbing 6.2 rebounds nightly, has a team-leading 13 blocked shots, five steals but has yet to register an assist versus eight turnovers. Granted, he needs to beef up his body plus develop the capacity to create for others but he is already the second best player on the Huskies squad.

News Bits

On Friday at home, UC Santa Cruz downed Claremont - Mudd - Scripps 67-64 on a late game three-pointer by Banana Slug Andrew (West Campus High/Sacramento City College) Ferrara-Jones.

Last Saturday, 6-foot-9 Landon (Wood High) Seaman enjoyed 24 points alongside 11 boards in the Menlo College 72-60 victory over San Francisco State. He played 37 minutes yet surprisingly didn't shoot a free throw all evening.

Also on Saturday, despite Shane (Salesian Prep) Bell providing a team best 20 points, Cal State Los Angeles fell 90-74 to Vanguard, the hoops program in Costa Mesa, not the financial services firm. For the victors, 6-foot-5 grad student Leonard (Moreau Catholic High) Turner just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine boards.

In yet another Saturday pairing, UC Merced edged Stanislaus State 86-83 in overtime. 6-foot-3 junior guard Cameron (Bishop O'Dowd) Brown posted a well-rounded line of 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists for the Merced-ites.

Then home again on Sunday, UC Santa Cruz bested Whitman 83-79 behind 6-foot-9 Joseph (Pleasant Grove High) Espy's 23 points. He added six rebounds and a trio of blocked shots.

..........................

6-foot-3 junior Nick (Oak Ridge High/Norwich University/American River College) Graves is averaging 10.0 points per game on 46%, 35% and 71% shooting respectively at Waldorf University in Iowa. That is in eight games/three starts and 21 minutes of play per contest. He is also contributing 2.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists an outing.

..........................

6-foot junior Drew (Sacramento City College) Fischer is averaging 6.3 points, 3.8 and 2.7 assists in six game/starts and 23 minutes an outing while shooting 37%, 3% and 71% respectively. He has also grabbed 10 steals.

..........................

In four games and 19 minutes a night, 6-foot freshman Trey (Moreau Catholic High) Knight is averaging 11.5 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists per matchup at Tacoma Community College (WA). He also has four steals. Tacoma is picked to finish third in conference play.

..........................

Dischon (St. Patrick St. Vincent/Washington State/Charlotte) Jackson keeps getting larger and larger—a steady 6-foot-11 but at 274 now (Charlotte had him at 260). But as a redshirt senior, he's starting for Iowa State and just provided 13 points plus three boards in 21 minutes versus powerful Auburn. On the season, Jackson is averaging 19 minutes a contest, 10.3 points plus 6.3 rebounds while shooting 57% overall, 77% at the foul line and with no three-point attempts. He has taken 22 foul shot attempts. In four games, Jackson has blocked five shots and been charged with just six fouls. It's difficult to see him in the NBA considering his offensive game is limited but he'll play for years overseas.

..........................

Not surprisingly, Aidan (Campolindo High/St. Mary's) Mahaney is struggling a bit at UConn as the surrounding talent level is higher and the coaching much tougher. In six games, five starts and 18 minutes per outing, he is averaging 4.8 points a contest with 12 assists versus just three turnovers but his shooting accuracy is way off. Try 29%, 29% and 50% (1-2 free throws). In comparison, he finished his sophomore year in Moraga shooting 39%, 36% and 81%. He'll perform better.

...........................

Just discovered that former Piedmont High talent 6-foot-6, 210 Brit Burden is on Coach Eric Musselman's USC roster. It look like he is a walk-on and is redshirting this season. Here is the feature we did on him last February.

Ty Virgil: "**National Signing Day: @Hillcrest Prep**

The journey to this moment has been long one, and and I am deeply grateful for my family, my mentors AD and Trev from my Truu Handles Family, and my teammates, who will be lifelong friends. Having put in well over 10,000 hours into this game, I am motivated to reach the next 10,000. This milestone is significant, but it is only one of many, the journey is far from over, God willing. I want to show my appreciation and say thank you to my AAU coaches, Mom, Dad, Coach Ken, Coach Majak, Coach Capp, and all the 2024 PHH and 2025 Team Supreme Coaching Staff, Coach Thomas of Team Determined, Team Lillard coaching staff, Coach Taj and Nick and everyone who tirelessly advocated to college coaches about my abilities and my character as a person.

Coach Schilling and the Pepperdine Coaching Staff, thank you for believing in me, I can’t wait to get out there!
