Virginia Tech 71, California 68 box. Too bad with the outcome as this was a winnable matchup. Andrej (Jesuit High) Stojakovic earned an unusual 24 points: 8-20, 1-6, 7-7. He scored a deuce to bring Cal within three but was errant with a three-point attempt at the final buzzer.

Oregon State 91, Pacific 55 box. When your opponent shoots 57%, makes 31-32 free throws and you get out-rebounded 36-19, well, the ending isn't going to be pretty.

Cal State Bakersfield 94, Cal State Northridge 90 box. Momoud (Santa Teresa High/West Valley College/Cal State San Bernardino) Fofana was near perfect going 9-10 from the floor in scoring 26 points but Northridge still fell to rival Bako. Also on Thursday, Hawai'i handled UC Riverside 84-76 with freshman point Aaron (Salesian Prep) Hunkin-Claytor producing seven points, five boards, four assists and zero turnovers, all in 17 minutes.

IN CCAA action on Thursday

Stanislaus State bested San Francisco State 67-55 behind 29 points from 6-foot-3 guard Jeremiah (Salesian Prep) Jones. He shot 10-16, 5-9 and 4-4 respectively and added five rebounds.

JoJo (Piedmont High) Murphy poured in 28 points on 7-13, 4-8 and 10-13 shooting respectively and 6-foot-6 freshman teammate Cortevious (Granada High) Taylor supplied 15 points alongside six boards as host Chico State edged Cal Poly Pomona in overtime 83-81. Demarreya (Enterprise High/Yuba College) Lewis-Cooper scored 24 points on 8-11, 3-5 and 5-6 shooting respectively for CPP.

Sonoma State proved to be six points better than Cal State Los Angeles at 76-70 with 6-foot-2 JC transfer Chris (Jesuit High/Sacramento State/Santa Rosa Junior College) Holley performing large with 15 points, nine assists and six rebounds. CSLA received a strong effort from guard Shane (Salesian Prep) Bell who enjoyed 14 points, six assists and five caroms.

Saturday scores

UC Merced had little trouble with UC Santa Cruz 75-51 as Cameron (Bishop O'Dowd) Brown provided 16 points on 8-11 overall shooting for the Valley-ites.

Landon (Wood High) Seaman filled the stat sheet with 20 points, six rebounds, three assists, a pair of 2 steals plus a blocked shot as Menlo College bested Fresno Pacific 76-64.

Dominican University took an 80-69 home win against William Jessup University as guard Darius (Cabrillo College) Best's 23 points led the victors in scoring. With the choicest of beards, Aussie Aydan Janssan co-led WJU with 13 points alongside Ja'Maris Blackmon. Jessup led by 10 at halftime.

In CCAA action on Saturday

Despite 18 points and six assists from Chris (Jesuit High/Sacramento State/Santa Rosa Junior College) Holley and five players contributing double figure scoring, the Seawolves fell short at home 85-81 to Cal State Dominguez Hills. Coming from the JC ranks, Holley has now more than gotten his feet wet, he's swimming and the water is just fine.

It was the Murphy-Kerr show once again as JoJo (Piedmont High) Murphy finished with 23 points and Isaiah (St. Francis High) Kerr contributed 19 in Chico State's 81-67 homecourt victory versus Cal State University San Bernardino. A 41-28 second half broke the game open. Murphy, however, was charged with seven turnovers--call it an aberration since he sports 50/33 assist-to-turnover season numbers.

Junior newcomer Andrew (West Campus High/Sacramento City College) Ferrara-Jones scored 39 points, shooting 14-17, 8-11, 3-5 respectively, in the UC Santa Cruz 89-85 road win versus Colorado College on Monday. Sophomore teammate Miles (Bishop O'Dowd) Burrows finished with 21 points on 8-13, 3-5 and 2-2 shooting respectively.

Dennis Marshall: "A whole lot of programs realizing that transfer portal ain’t garnering the results they expected. Hell, u can get a good high school kids that can average 3, 4, 5 ppg. That’s what a lot of transfers are doing. There’s only a handful of difference makers. Not as many as made out to be."

The low majors don't necessarily get to pick and choose. Realistically, most mid majors too. Currently, college experience is manna from heaven for college coaches since so many collegiate players hit the transfer portal. It's true that high schoolers are getting the short shrift in recruiting since developing a prospect or a prospect developing in a couple of years is a feat not encountered much nowadays for multiple reasons.

6-foot-2, 200 Cole Williams/St. Vincent De Paul High disappeared from sight after high school. I knew he was somewhere collegiately but couldn't find his new address. Santa Rosa area coaching legend Tom Bonfigli (Williams' high school coach) knew and once contacted, he wrote "He is a grey-shirt with Coach (Craig) McMillan—working out with Santa Rosa JC. I talked to Cole—he plans to play next season."

Williams should be a JC force next season after tutelage from McMillan. Here is our January 2024 Williams feature.

6-foot-7 190 forward Chris (De La Salle) Bell is a junior at Syracuse and in 15 games/13 starts and 24.4 minutes an outing, he is averaging 10.3 points a contest while shooting 39%, 27% and 75% respectively. He is also averaging 2.6 boards.

Here's a January 7 anecdote posted by Samantha Croston: "The announcer for MBB just had a fascinating story for why Chris Bell is coming off the bench instead of starting. Autry told the announcers that Chris Bell was struggling mentally w/ the pressure of starting, and by coming in off the bench, he could switch his mindset from “when am I coming out of the game” to “when am I going in the game.” So far tonight, Bell is 3-for-3 from the field and has 7 points and leads all scorers."

"Rookie Jaylen Wells registered his first double-double on Monday (January 6) to help lead the Memphis Grizzlies to a win over the Dallas Mavericks at FedExForum to snap a two-game skid.

Wells produced 17 points, a career-high 10 rebounds and one assist in the 119-104 victory. He went 10-of-11 from the free-throw line and was a plus-18 in nearly 35 minutes on the court in his 32nd start of the season for coach Taylor Jenkins and the Grizzlies.

The 39th pick struggled to shoot from the field, knocking down just three of his 11 shot attempts. But Wells remained active on both ends of the court and found success penetrating into the paint to draw contact and get to the free-throw line..."

Courtney Anderson Jr. redshirted last season at Colorado after graduating from Dublin High. This season, he has played just 15 minutes in the first 13 games and I don't believe he is currently injured. (An October 2024 team preview contained this: "...Anderson has been hampered by injuries thus far in practice...") The Buffaloes also have at least two incoming prep backcourt recruits but only the Andersons know where Courtney Jr. will be playing next season if that decision has even been made.

California 75, Virginia 61 box. The Bears won both 20 minute sessions as Andrej (Jesuit High) Stojakovic didn't even attempt a trey but still finished with 23 points, aided by going 11-13 at the foul line.

Louisiana Tech 81, Florida International U 64 box. In 25 minutes, Al (Franklin High/San Diego City College) Green soulfully produced 21 points on 7-9, 5-7 and 2-4 shooting respectively in the victory.

UC Davis 63, Cal State Fullerton 53 box. For the winners, sophomore guard Connor (Dougherty Valley High) Sevilla scored a team best 18 points and also pulled down five rebounds in the homecourt success.

Pacific 95, Washington State 94 OT box. Put this one into the Upset of the Season category. Too bad it wasn't on February 17 (Washington's birthday) as, in Pullman, 6-foot-4 transfer guard Lamar Washington both scored 40 points (16-22, 4-6, 4-5 shooting respectively) and buried a triple at the buzzer for the game-winning shot. The young man is a darkhorse candidate for mayor of Stockton.

Santa Clara 82, Oregon State 81 OT box. For the Broncos, Elijah (West Valley College) Mahi led with both 21 points as well as five assists and added six boards to his mix.

San Francisco 81, Portland 72 box. With four starters scoring in double figures and shooting 50% overall and 39% as a team. USF won both 20 minute sessions and went to 4-1 in conference, 14-4 overall.

Idaho 80, Sacramento State 67 box. Jacob Holt enjoyed a 35 point, 10 rebound double-double but support from his teammates, but one, fell short as Idaho grabbed a solid road victory. Julian (St. Joseph Notre Dame/CCSF, U of Alberta) Vaughns contributed 13 points plus four assists in the Hornet cause but no one else for Sacramento State reach double figures scoring.

Damarion Vann-Kelly out of Monterey Trail High has chosen his four-year college destination.

Ersin Demir: "Damarion Vann-Kelly is the best scorer I've evaluated in the JUCO reigns this year. Florida International University got themselves a true stud. Next Denver Jones?"

more from Ersin Demir: "Damarion Vann-Kelly — Northeastern Oklahoma College A&M (#5)

Combo Guard — 6’4” — Freshman — Sacramento, CA

Vann-Kelly plays at the NJCAA Division II level. Regardless, his scoring prowess is translatable on most levels he’ll play at during his collegiate career. He’s a good athlete who uses his shooting prowess to create driving lanes to the basket. On top of that, he’s looking to play as a point-of-attack defender while looking to collect deflections and steals.

After seven games, Vann-Kelly shoots 62.5% from downtown. That number will naturally regress, but that doesn’t take away any value from his top-notch shooting ability. After five games, he earned a starting role and has 10 made threes in two consecutive contests.

The value for the next few years is Vann-Kelly recognizing his shooting gravity while showing aggressiveness to get downhill due to it. The area of development is to play much more in control. At times, it looks like the game is all about Vann-Kelly. That’s not a shot at him but more a result of always playing a similar role. He has the court vision to involve others. The untapped passing and playmaking potential is there.

Therefore, the focus for him should be to be more of a team player rather than making it a one-man show. The 20-second mark is an example with four other teammates waiting for the ball he attempts an off-the-dribble three. He’ll very likely transfer up but should commit to a program willing to give him valuable minutes to tap into his scoring potential.

Projection for next season: Scorer off the bench for a low-major program. He could eventually reach the high-major level!"

The No Ceilings guys have San Diego State's 6-foot-7 Miles (Lincoln High) Byrd as the 40th pick in the NBA draft this year. They list 60 prospects. He's just a sophomore.

The Bleacher Report lists Byrd at #31 and offer: "Miles Byrd should start drawing more attention with an appealing mix of 6'7" size, shotmaking confidence, ball-screen playmaking flashes and defensive instincts. Teams may just be hesitant to confidently slot him with first-rounders until they see him against more noteworthy opponents or prospects at the NBA combine."

Stanford's Maxime Reynaud is placed at #34 with TBR offering "Averaging 21.4 points and 1.8 threes at 7'1", Maxime Raynaud has taken another step forward offensively. His footwork, counters, command and touch with both hands from the post have looked professional. He's consistently getting himself high-percentage, controlled looks. And now that he's shooting 38.2 percent on real volume (4.6 attempts), his fluidity scoring inside and out has made it easier to look past the athletic and defensive questions for a projected second-rounder."

Texas Tech's Darrion (Capital Christian High) Williams owns the 50th spot and his TBR report goes: "Averaging 5.2 assists through 11 games, Darrion Williams continues to showcase his passing and raise his three-point mark after a slower start shooting from deep. He can score from the post, but his path to an NBA role is offering the combination of shotmaking, smart ball-moving and wing defense."

Verbal Commits: "Arizona State, California and Creighton offered 2026 SoCal Academy (CA) F Adam Tyson."

So much for that hard NO!!!!! from Pat Riley.

"...A 12-3 start to the season is all but a distant memory for Golden State now that they are 17-16 overall. Stephen Curry needs more help if the Warriors are to be the true title threats they believed they could be at the start of the season, and Butler's fit next to both Curry and Draymond Green on the wing seems to make a lot of sense given this team's style of play. However, the Warriors are not as eager to move Andrew Wiggins as they once were, sources said. The former first-overall pick would need to be the centerpiece of any deal for Butler since Golden State is hard-capped at the first apron.

More complications outside of including Wiggins arise for the Warriors if they pursued Butler, as matching his salary could be achieved by including Dennis Schroder and Gary Payton II in a potential trade package. Schroder, who was recently acquired by the Warriors from the Brooklyn Nets, can be dealt in a package with other players on either Feb. 5 or Feb. 6 before the trade deadline. Even so, the Dubs would find themselves below the minimum roster requirement with no room to add an extra player due to their hard cap.

The Warriors and Heat have held discussions with one another regarding Butler this season, league sources confirmed. Although mutual interest between Butler and Golden State exists, Miami has made it clear that Jonathan Kuminga is a player they would want to be included in the framework of a potential deal for their superstar forward. While there are conflicting opinions around the league as to what Kuminga's long-term future looks like, the Warriors have not been eager to include him in trade discussions to this point..."

Can't imagine there is a team that will trade a budding star who isn't quite there for a few months of renting a still talented elder. Hint, hint. Butler is going to have to agree to sign a new contract with his new team to pull something off. Unless desperation sets in amongst a certain general manager."

Jake Davis: "After a great conversation with the coaching staff, I am blessed to receive an offer from Cal Poly. Thank you to Coach DeGeorge and the entire staff for believing in me."

Out of Las Lomas High, Davis is a 6-foot-4 combo guard at West Valley College which won the state championship last season. He also has a Fresno State offer and interest from Colorado State.

*****Jake Lieberman: "Vann-Kelly has committed to FIU. Great addition for Jeremy Ballard & Co."

Jake Lieberman: "6’5 Junior College guard Damarion Vann-Kelly out of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M has been offered by Fresno State. Vann-Kelly just visited FIU & was offered, too. Averaging 20.8 points on 53-88 3PT (60.2%)."

Congrats to DVK. FIU, a Conference USA member, is Florida International University located in Miami. Van-Kelly is a freshman out of Monterey Trail High. Didn't think he would go even further away from home, not with USF and Pacific in pursuit. Shows what I know. Does FIU have a solid amount of NIL funding?
