News Bits

6-foot-4 Andrew (West Campus High/Sacramento City College) Ferrara-Jones has begun his tenure at UC Santa Cruz en fuego as in three games/starts and 30 minutes a contest, he is averaging a team high 18.7 points an outing while shooting 49%, 45% and 1,000% respectively. Additionally, he is grabbing 3.3 rebounds each night as well as being credited with eight assists. He has a game high of 32 points.

It's just two games (two starts) but 5-foot-11 freshman point Connor (Clovis West High) Amundsen is playing larger than big for Dartmouth thus far. He is averaging 12.5 points in 27 minutes a contest while shooting 42%, 38% and 75% respectively and his 16 free throw attempts lead his team. Amundsen is grabbing three rebounds game and has eight assists versus two turnovers. So many college teams rejected Amundsen because of his size and build but he wasn't likely to head anywhere else anyway once he had an Ivy League offer.

The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight -- no, this is not about Jimmy Breslin's excellent novel on the Brooklyn Mafia but rather San Jose State University men's basketball team. Try 37% overall shooting accuracy versus 49% for opponents thus far. overall. It's closer on three attempts but still too low at 26% to 29%. Additionally, the Spartans being out-rebounded by six per contest versus Cal State East Bay, Western Illinois, Pacific and Hawai'i.

Who can help? SJSU needs a point and also a creator/shooter. Freshman Ben Roseborough could play the point in a pinch but he is best as a two guard blessed with extraordinary potential, someone who would immediately be the team's best shooter. The problem? One foot of his remains in a boot as feet issues have sidelined him for a long period of time. If he misses this season, it will be at least two seasons of basketball missed.

Sean Paul: "Texas Tech’s Darrion (Capital Christian High/Bishop Gorman/Nevada) Williams is easily one of the most underrated players in the sport. Wouldn’t stun me if he gets All-American buzz later on this year...Always been a really good scorer, but needs to shoot more. That's the next step for Williams. He does everything well."

At 6-foot-6, 225, Williams' birthplace is Sacramento.

San Jose State University 93, Life Pacific University 56 box. 6-foot-10 Spartan Sadraque Nganga finally busted out for 29 points (12-14 shooting) and 12 boards. The tallest LP player measures 6-foot-6. You will receive the title MASTER of BASKETBALL for answering this one question: where is NAIA Life Pacific located? Okay, time's up. The answer is, d-r-u-m-r-o-l-l: San Dimas in southern California.

Hawaii 76, Pacific 66 box. Coming off the bench and playing for 36 minutes, transfer guard Marcus (Archbishop Mitty/Houston Christian) Greene finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. His hometown is Gilroy. Neither squad showed any three point proficiency as the victors shot 3-17 and Pacific went 2-13.

Tuesday, Nov 12 NCAA D1 Scores

It's not difficult to discern what the offensive strategy was for Menlo.

San Diego State 100, Occidental 49 box. Guard BJ (Modesto Christian High) Davis was one of three Aztecs with 16 points. He also pilfered five steals. Miles Byrd did not play (don't know why not).

St. Mary's 87, Akron 68 box. The Gaels' Paulius Murauskas led his squad with 23 points plus freshman guard Mikey (Denver Prep/Prolific Prep) Lewis contributed 18 points.

UC San Diego 64, Sacramento State 54, box. The Hornets were down by 11 points at halftime but could gain only one point in the second 20 minutes.

Stanford 90, Northern Arizona 64 box. Maxime Reynaud led Stanford with 22 points and also 11 boards. Oziyah (Modesto Chrristian High/SoCal Academy/USC) Sellers scored 17 points.

In case anyone is asking or proclaiming, no, James Madison University's 100-52 victory over Mary Baldwin University does not prove male superiority twice over in hoops. I won't even touch the Virginia Military Institute 102-66 defeat of Christendom College on Tuesday evening.
