Boys Basketball Team
The MaxPreps All Sac-Joaquin Section boys basketball team honors the top players in the area.
CO-PLAYERS OF THE YEAR
Brandon Gibson Jr, Monterey Trail (Elk Grove)
Senior | Guard
Filled up all five stat categories and averaged 23.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. The senior had a career day in multiple categories in a 98-50 win over Rivery City on Jan. 24. Turning defense into offense, Gibson had 10 steals and 51 points — both career highs — while shooting 22 for 30.
The senior turned in double-digit scoring performances every game this season and had five games where he scored at least 30 points and three more of 29 points for the 27-5 Mustangs.
JUNIORS OF THE YEAR
Anthony Moore, Lincoln (Stockton) | Guard
All season long the 6-foot-6 guard piled up monster games in all five major stat categories. Arguably his best game was against city rival St. Mary's when he scored 33 points on 74 percent shooting while pulling down 10 rebounds, dishing out five assists and blocking three shots. In the Division 1 section championship game, Moore helped keep the game close throughout by tallying up 13 points in the loss.
Gavin Sykes, Modesto Christian (Modesto) | Guard
Last year's SJS Sophomore of the Year led the Crusaders in scoring at 21.3 points per game. Sykes has an ability to make the correct decision on the floor time after time and he has a handful of college scholarship offers. With a blue banner on the line at Golden 1 Center, he scored 16 points as the Crusaders won 68-63 against a team with three players on this list.
SOPHOMORES OF THE YEAR
Manno Jenkins, Natomas (Sacramento) | Guard
Helped elevate the program this season as the Nighthawks reached the section championship game and the regional semifinals. While he averaged 18.8 points per game, the sophomore averaged 23 in the section playoffs, including a 31-point performance in a semifinal win on the road at Union Mine.
Jenkins did much more than score this season. He had at least six steals in eight games while putting up high rebounding and assist numbers every night.
Myles Jones, Modesto Christian | Guard
Took on a big role for the Crusaders from the moment he stepped on the floor. He did a little bit of everything by averaging 12.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game. In the Division 1 section championship game the sophomore hit several big shots to win the title and finished with 17 points.
FRESHMEN OF THE YEAR
Siincere Hudson, Inderkum (Sacramento) | Guard
Burst on the scene by scoring 20 points in his first high school game. The rest of the season he continued to score in bunches by hitting 32 points twice. While Hudson hit double-digit points in 15 games, one of his most impressive outings was in a 106-101 win over Monterey Trail where he had 25 points on 60 percent shooting. Defensively the freshman absolutely dominated, recording six steals to go with five rebounds.
Brenden Hawkins, Del Oro (Loomis) | Guard
The Del Oro guard averaged 24 minutes per game for a squad battling in the Sierra Foothill League night in and night out. While he averaged 10 points per game, the freshman had one of his best games against Rocklin by scoring 21 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the 72-52 win. Hawkins excelled in all facets of the game by averaging 4.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals per contest.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Micheal Holloway, Vanden
He could game plan on the spot with ease. He returned to the Sac-Joaquin Section championship for the fourth consecutive time and walked away with his third blue banner in that time frame.
