Jeff Goodman: "WCC imposes a $5K fine on Santa Clara for violating WCC’s court storming policy after the win last night over Gonzaga. WCC policy related to court storming was adopted in Nov. of 2023. Subsequent offenses will result in a fine of up to $25,000 (2nd offense), and up to $50,000 (3rd offense) in the same season."

Mario Williams Jr.: "Blessed to announce that I’ve committed & signed to Western Oregon University!"

Williams Jr. is a 6-foot-5 shooting guard attending Venture Academy in Stockton and also playing AAU ball with Team Arsenal.

One under-the-radar D1 prospect is 6-foot-2 sophomore Chabot guard Makaio (James Logan High) Mims. In 18 games/14 starts, he is averaging 14.4 points per game, shooting 50%, 43% and 71% respectively alongside 5.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists. His assist to turnover numbers are 45/20. He also has 14 blocked shots.

Against CCSF recently, he scored 24 points on 9-12, 5-6 and 1-2 shooting. In a matchup earlier with West Valley College, Mims tallied 11 points on 4-7, 1-1 and 2-2 shooting respectively. An outing versus So Cal powerhouse Fullerton, Mims produced a peculiar line of 11 points on 5-11, 1-4 and 0-0 shooting but grabbed nine rebounds and dished out five assists. In a San Diego City College pairing, Mims shot 6-12, 4-4 and 0-0 and finished with 16 points. An area needing improvement is having just 34 free throw attempts in 18 games.

"The Warriors' rot starts at the top with Steve Kerr"

'Rot" is an inappropriate choice of words—far too inflammatory—but columnists love to provoke. He is writing about human beings, trying their best but certainly struggling to succeed.

"Report: Warriors have ‘everyone but Steph' trade deadline approach"

Cal-Hi Sports Northern California Boys Player of the Week

Romello Brohm (Woodland Christian, Woodland) Soph.

The destination we head to in search of the Northern California Boys Player of the Week takes us to a familiar place. The place is Woodland Christian and it’s about 10-miles north of UC Davis off of Highway 113 in the southern part of Woodland.

The reason we say it’s a familiar place is because just about a month ago Woodland Christian got written up when the Cardinals won their first CIF state title. They bested Wilmington Banning, 23-13, in the CIF 5-A state championship played December 10 at El Camino College. They also capped a 15-0 season.

Brohm doesn’t play football but he sure can pound it on the hardwood and his latest performances are a perfect example.

Last week, in an 83-53 victory against Argonaut of Jackson, the Cardinals’ sophomore matched the opposition point for point and his 53 points broke the school record. He had a monster double-double after adding 11 rebounds, plus Romello had five steals and three assists.

Prior to the Argonaut win, Brohm went for 36 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals in a 73-65 win against Victory Christian of Carmichael. In the two games last week after the Argonaut win, Romello also had 27 points, four steals, three rebounds and three assists in a 69-21 win over visiting SAEL of Nevada City, and a double-double 34 points and 10 rebounds with five assists and six steals in a 82-59 win against Encina Prep of Sacramento.

Not too shabby for a four-game week where Brohn averaged 37.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.

So far this season for the 10-3 Cardinals and heading into a Tuesday night match-up with visiting Sacramento Waldorf, Brohm was averaging 30.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 2.5 assists per game. The per game scoring average sat at No. 7 in the state and No. 1 in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section.

The Pacific Grove native, who was the Herald’s Player of the Year in 2012 at Palma, is shooting 58.3 percent from the field.
