Modesto Junior College Men's Basketball: "Congrats to Freshmen Ylan Esso-Essis who has committed to UC Davis. This season Ylan was the Big 8 Conference Player of the Year, made the Fab 50 Freshman List, named to the CCCMBCA 2025 All-State Team & was named an All American by the NABC."

The 6-foot-8 Esso-Essis is a marvelous pickup for Coach Jim Les and Company. He'll likely play as a wing and, along with a new set of young backcourters brought into UC Davis hoops, should soon get the Aggies back into Big West Conference contention. He averaged 15.5 points and 8.2 rebounds this past season  while shooting 37% from three-point range. Essos-Essis also possessed offers from San Diego (WCC), UNLV (MWC), SJSU (MWC), UC Santa Barbara (BWC), Valparaiso (MVC) as well as interest from St. Mary's. (WCC)

He has a slightly younger brother named Jess who stands 6-foot-9 and is also a D1 prospect. Here's a post from CBB Europe dated 3-29: "Jess and Ylan Esso Essis have visited Siena last week and have been gaining interest from several schools lately: Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette, Seton Hall, Campbell and Kent State."

AND

"Brayden Fagbemi to Join Men's Basketball Program"

He's a 6-foot point with two seasons of college hoops experience making it official and likely will be a starter with UC Davis due to his seasoning.

........................................

Sam Federman: "NEWS: Iona transfer Yaphet Moundi has committed to San Jose State, per his IG."

The 6-foot-8, 205 pound Moundi entered the transfer portal on March 31. He played in 32 games with 17 starts and at 20.6 minutes a night, scoring 9.8 points and with 7.4 rebounds. He shot 57%, didn't attempt a three-pointer and shot 51% at the foul line. He led Iona in rebounding (95 of his 237 rebound were at the offensive end) but lacks any range. It appears he has one year of remaining eligibility.

AND

Jake Lieberman: "6'5 guard Ryan Richardson from Missouri State-West Plains Junior College tells me that he's planning on visiting Alabama State,  St. Peter’s, New Haven & Stonehill. Hearing from USC Upstate, Omaha, San Jose State, Marist, SIUE, UTEP. 11.0 points & 4.1 rebounds."

SJSU Coach Tim Miles loves him some big guards but boy he really need an effective center right now with apparently four schollies remaining.

Good size, solid production, can compete for a starting spot and also add depth.

Former UC Davis 6-foot-7 freshman forward Jacob (Twelve Bridges High) Gilchist in heading next to Chico State which seems to be a very appropriate pairing for both entities. LINK

AND

Chico State Men's Basketball: "Introducing Braddock Kjellesvig to the #WildcatFamily!! Braddock is coming off a senior campaign at De La Salle, where he averaged 8 points and 8 rebounds per game. He was a key part of a De La Salle team who went 28-5 this past season ranking 9th in the state."

Mr. J Brown: "Proud of you, proud of the season you had. Looking forward to the next few years. Congrats on signing with Cal State Dominguez Hills."

6-foot-2, 165 pound Jalen Brown is back in Cali, be it the southern portion. As a sophomore at Regis University (CO), he averaged 13.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists. Prepped at Modesto Christian High.

........................................

Out of the Arizona high school ranks, 6-foot-7 Garrett Anderson played two seasons for Coach Tim Miles at San Jose State University before transferring to Central Washington University, a D2 school. Now he has transferred again and it appears, with some assistance from Miles, Anderson is back in D1.

"...Miles, a former Mayville State and North Dakota State head coach, provided a connection between Anderson and the Fighting Hawks.

Miles was an assistant coach at Northern State when the Wolves recruited current UND head coach Paul Sather out of high school..."

Good for Anderson and credit to Miles as too many coaches have an out of sight, out of mind approach once a player departs.

........................................

Jake Lieberman: "2026 6'1 PG Mason Magee out of Basha HS (AZ) & Compton Magic has taken an official visit to Cal, I’m told. Magee holds offers from the likes of St. Louis, Fresno State, Louisiana, West Virginia, Seton Hall, Grand Canyon, New Mexico State, +."

Raw offensively and needs added weight/strength but he could truly blossom with the appropriate tutelage in college. Going with the Hornets would be a great fit but see just below about the signing of a similarly-sized player. Demuynck is a Hayward native.

AND

PortalUpdates: "Stony Brook transfer Jeremiah Nyarko has committed to Sacramento State. The 6’9” junior forward appeared in 8 games for the Seawolves, averaging 2.4 points, and 1.9 rebounds in 8.1 minutes per game."

So Nyarko will be a senior. A native of Ghana, he is on the slim side at 200 pounds.

Jeff Goodman: "San Francisco’s Malik Thomas has received a waiver from NCAA for another season of eligibility, source told TheFieldOf68. Virginia is the heavy favorite to land Thomas, source told TheFieldOf68. The 6-5 senior averaged 19.9 points per game last season and is a 40 percent 3-point shooter over the past two seasons."

Thomas will also gauge what interest the NBA has in him.

AND

Siincere Hudson: "I am blessed to have received a D1 offer from USF.... Thanks to coaching staff ..."

Hudson is a 6-foot-1 2027 point guard out of Inderkum High in Sacramento. He was named the Central Valley Coinference MVP this season. Hudson has two other offers (Sacramento State and ?).

........................................

Verbal Commits: "2025 City College of San Francisco (CA G King-Jhsanni Wilhite has committed to Lamar."

The 6-foot-1, 175 pound backcourter is also out of Archbishop Riordan and has two remaining years of eligibility. Besides Lamar, was involved with Southern Utah, Portland State and Chaminade. His numbers this season: 11.9 points on 47%, 41% and 80% shooting respectively alongside 2.2 assists on the state championship winning team.

........................................

PortalUpdates: "Western Michigan transfer JaVaughn Hannah has committed to San José State. The 6’4” junior guard started 24/30 games played, averaging 12.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per game this season. Was named MAC 6th Man of The Year in 2023-24."

Spartan Coach Tim Miles is starting a 6-foot-4 and under league. SJSU has lost all its centers and power forwards from the 2024-25 roster.

The 6-foot, 195 pound Woodson is out of Archbishop Riordan. He earned First Team All State status this season, averaging 15.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.

Jake Lieberman: "2026 6’8 prospect Trey Thompson out of Greenville HS (TN) & Tennessee Impact Basketball tells me that he’s been in contact with BYU, Kentucky, Louisville, Tennessee, Villanova, Stanford, Virginia, Stetson & Purdue in the past week. Stanford just offered."

A bit cryptic but it's Northwest Florida State College for DVK (Monterey Trail High) in his sophomore year. It has to be a great place to be since it's located in Niceville (I kid you not). The hoops team finished 20-9 this season

Merritt College Hoops: "Another one! #merritthoops Let’s go Aziz Hantous."

Hantous is a 6-foot-6 wing who is headed to Doane University, an NAIA school located in Nebraska. He was offered in late March. A Tunisian, Hantous also received an offer from San Francisco State. His production this season:  7.1 points per game, 6.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists plus shooting 50% from the floor.

PLUS

Merritt College Hoops: "Another sophomore out! #merritthoops"

Out of James Logan High, 5-foot-10 Kayleb Manuel is headed to Fullerton in Orange County to attend Hope International University with a 3.3 grade point average. HIU finished this season with a 22-8 record, having reached the NAIA national tournament.

........................................

Now this one is a shocker, a real stunner.

Portal Updates: "Pacific transfer Jazz Gardner has committed to Saint Mary’s. The 7’0” (230) sophomore center started 27/33 games played, averaging 4.6 points on 60.2% FG, and 3.8 rebounds per game this season."

Gardner failed to have much effect both in Stockton as a sophomore and also at Nevada in his previous season. In 33 games and 18 minutes a contest in 2024-25, he blocked just 19 shots. Gardner also hasn't displayed much hoops instinct (which cannot be taught) on the court and just hasn't contributed enough when provided with the opportunity but Gael Coach Randy Bennett has long proven to be an astute talent evaluator and he did need another big for the upcoming season. It will be interesting to see if Gardner or 7-foot-1 senior Harry Wessels starts and who plays the greater number of minutes. Where does 7-foot-1 redshirt frosh Andrew (Granada High) McKeever fit within the enter dynamic.

This answers one question: Delly Mouthguard: "Jelani Gardner, father of Jazz Gardner, says that Jazz will redshirt next season for Saint Mary's."

6-foot-6 Jelani Gardner played 12 years of basketball professionally so good bloodlines are there.

........................................

Another surprise here. Is there a last time the Cardinal signed a D2 transfer?

Portal Updates: "Cal State Dominguez Hills (D2) transfer Jeremy Dent-Smith has committed to Stanford. The 6’1” junior guard started 36/37 games played, averaging 19.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Shot 35% from 3, hitting 93 3-pointers this season. Dent-Smith was named a First Team D2 All-American. Had 27 points, and 10 rebounds in the D2 championship game against Nova Southeastern, and 33 points against Dallas Baptist in the final four."

Out of southern California, Dent came out last season but eventually returned to CSDH. He's productive but needs to better his shooting efficiency and reduce his turnovers. Stanford Coach Kyle Smith in known for employing sets that are designed for his guards but surrounding Dent-Smith with some solid frontcourt talent remains a task to be fulfilled.

Maybe best of all here is that Dent-Smith can earn a degree from Stanford. Curiously, St. Mary's took a run at him.

........................................

Portal Updates: "Indiana State transfer Jahni Summers has committed to Sacramento State. The 6’6” sophomore guard appeared in 20 games for the Sycamores, averaging 5.7 points, and 1.9 rebounds per game. Summers shot 38.5% from 3 (26/65). Started off at Coffeyville CC.

........................................

Verbal Commits: "2025 Golden State Prep (CA) F Joshua Dalton has committed to Loyola Marymount."

........................................

Verbal Commits: "Former Montana G/F Jalen Foy is transferring to Cal State East Bay (DII)."

Foy is 6-foot-7, 215 pounds and played just 88 minutes last season.

........................................

Liam Hanley: "French wing Ylan Esso is Saint Mary's latest portal contact. The 6-8 freshman was an NABC All-American at Modesto Junior College this season."

Wouldn't be surprised if Moraga soon becomes THE choice. But where were they before? Why the late contact? Esso has also tripped to Pacific.

........................................

Sean Cunningham: "Mike Bibby & Sac State were able to secure Mikey Williams for $200k, sources tell me. The 6-3 guard just completed his freshman season at UCF. He has a huge social media following as an ex-high school phenom. He was initially set to play at Memphis in 2024 before the San Diego native dealt with an off-court legal matter stemming from his arrest in April of 2023." Williams will turn 21 in June."

Williams hasn't accomplished much in college although it's obviously early so my conjecture is it was the lure of playing for Bibby combined with the opportunity to be around Shaq likely really did the trick. But $200k ain't chump change vis-a-vis Williams production in his initial college season.

lCollege Basketball Content: "Mikey Williams chose Sacramento State over Long Island (LIU), per Nelson CastilloNY."

UNLV had some degree of interest.

........................................

Matt Schwab: "Las Positas So. Jorren (Washington High-Fremont) Edmonds selected to NABC 3C2A All-American team. First Team All State. 12 ppg, 50.2% fg, 52.0% 3 pt, 80.3% ft, 6.8 rpg, 4.4 apg. “He did everything well” - LPC coach James Giacomazzi."

Underrated. Could help every NorCal D1 squad.

........................................

Modesto Junior College Men's Basketball: "Malachi (Central Catholic High) Chico State Men's Basketball" Miller has received an offer from Division 2 Western Washington University (Great Northwest Athletic Conference)."

........................................

Chico State Men's Basketball: "Introducing Jeremiah (Clayton Valley Charter High) Dargan to the #WildcatFamily!! Jeremiah brings experience from both the Division 1 and JUCO levels. He is coming off a junior season at the University of Montana, and was a key contributor to a historic 33-0 run with West Valley Junior College in 2023-24."

Dargan will really help in replacing a portion of Chico State's transfer portal losses.

Seattle U Men's Basketball: "Welcome to the Redhawk family, JoJo (Piedmont High) Murphy."

Would love to know his NIL amount at signing. Really wanted him to land at one of the NorCal D1s but it was not to be. Seattle is playing in the West Coast Conference this coming season so the 6-foot-3 Murphy will be appearing in San Francisco, Moraga and Santa Clara as well as Stockton for road games.

CCSF guard Miles (Stuart Hall High) Amos recently signed with Seattle too.

........................................

Modesto Junior College Men's Basketball: "Congrats to Ylan Esso-Essis for being named an All American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches."

"NBA announces early entry candidates for NBA Draft 2025"

6-foot-6 junior-to-be Miles (Lincoln High) Byrd is one although he may return to San Diego State. Byrd seems to be a second-rounder. 6-foot-6 senior-to-be Darrion (Capital Christian High) Williams is another and it appears he will go in the first round and likely stay in the draft. 6-foot-7 senior-to-be AK (Clovis North High) Okereke is also testing the waters. After graduating in three years, he transferred from Cornell to Vanderbilt and my guess is he remains for his final year in Nashville.

The shocker is 6-foot-4 junior-to-be Money (Oakland High) Williams out of Montana. He needs to attain greater consistency with his production and his shooting (40% overall, 34% on treys) and reduce his turnovers (88). With both his parents having passed on, Williams is testing the waters in case some team or teams take a liking to him, make his life financially stable and thus allow him to care for his siblings. 6-foot-6 senior-to-be Elijah Fisher played at Pacific this season and is currently in the transfer portal and also testing out NBA draft interest.

Damarion Vann-Kelly: "Due to a coaching change, I will no longer be attending Frank Phillips College for my sophomore season. I am grateful to Coach Jenkins for his support and wish him all the best in his new role at UTEP."

Because of this event, plus due to the fact that the 6-foot-5 Monterey Trail High grad can earn some NIL $$$ versus a second year in the JC ranks and the greater interest in acquiring his services of late, it sure appears Vann-Kelly will be at a D1 next season. Might UTEP now be interested? Would DVC have interest in Sac State now with Bibby and Shaq now in charge?

Here are the colleges of late (mid-April) expressing interest (the first four should have decent NIL $$$ to offer at this point):

  • Nebraska
  • Ole Miss
  • Memphis
  • UNLV
  • Arkansas State
  • San Jose State
  • La Salle
  • Weber State
  • Omaha

Dinos Trigonis: "2025 thefantastic40 notes: 6-9+ 2025 Kenyon DeMunyck (Link Prep/MO) is one of the top rim-protectors still available in senior class. Kenyon posted double/doubles in both games for Belmont Shore/CA on Sat. Will be with Belmont at Terrific24FCP in Memphis May 16-18."

DeMunyck's Bay Area connection is being out of San Leandro High. His offensive game remains raw and he needs 20 more pounds of muscle but he could help some teams in need of a shotblocker and shot alterer. He has a 7'3" wingspan and I believe is either the cousin or brother of Jourdan DeMuynck since both came out of San Leandro.
