"Cal Men's Basketball Roster Overview" - Write For California

.........................

Chabot Gladiator Basketball: "Gladiator 6’8 Sophomore C Demetrius Howard has committed to a full scholarship to Governors State University in Chicago, Illinois."

The timing seems unusual but getting an education fully paid for is always fantastic. Howard averaged 4.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and blocked 38 shots in 28 games last season, playing 16 minutes a contest. The 6-foot-8 talent is out of Las Vegas.

.........................

Diego Martinez: "COMMITTED!! 💜💛"

Missed this from May. Martinez is a 6-foot-6 wing out of Valley Christian High in San Jose.  He earned First Team All West Catholic Athletic League this past season after shooting 55%, 37% and 82% while scoring 21 points per game. Now, he'll be playing for Gator Coach Vince Inglima.

.........................

Godson Eyita: Blessed to receive my first D1 offer from the University of California, Berkeley 💙💛. Thank you Amorrow Morgan and the entire staff for believing in me."

A 2027 prospect, Eyita stands 6-foot-9, weighs 230 pounds and attends school in Santa Maria.

.........................

Stockton Kings: "The Stockton Kings have agreed to trade the returning player rights to Jordan Ford and Deonte Burton and a 2025 second-round NBA G League Draft pick to the Wisconsin Herd in exchange for the returning player rights to Drew Timme."

.........................

Elijah Sykes: "Excited to take a visit to Alma College on October 19th."

The 5-foot-10 and 2025 class member Sykes attends Sheldon High and plays AAU with the Rose City Ballers. Alma College is located in Michigan.

.........................

Devaughn Dorrough: "Extremely blessed to have received another Division 1 offer from Sacramento State."

Dorrough is a freshman at Monterey Trail High and plays in the spring and summer with the Oakland Soldiers. He received an earlier offer from Washington.

.........................

Verbal Commits: "2026 Newman (MA) F Quinn Costello has received an offer from Stanford."

.........................

Obinna Ekezie Jr.: "Very blessed to receive a scholarship offer from UCLA. Thank you for the opportunity!"

Ekezie will have all the 'vaunted' programs offering before his recruitment is completed.  Those now 3 hour+ plane rides to fellow ACC campuses are not a plus for the Bruins.

.........................

"Jaylen Wells Looks Like a Second-Round Steal for the Grizzlies"

Out of Folsom High and Sonoma State, and as the 39th selection in the draft, Wells is making NBA scouting departments look really bad  His is a great story.

.........................

"Grizzlies Sign Miles Norris..."

Morris starred at City College San Francisco in the 2019-20 season, averaging 16.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.4 blocked shots and 2.0 steals per game. He earned Player of the Year honors.

.........................

Basketball Recruitment: "2025 6'3 PG Ace Glass has trimmed his list to the following schools.

Finalists:

  • Texas A&M
  • Wyoming
  • Stanford"

If he isn't in Palo Alto next season then a sanity check will be required. Glass has tripped to all three schools but he's a SoCal young man -- does Buzz Williams have that much charisma? Wyoming? Coach Sundance Wicks will be elected the next governor of the state if Glass signs as a Cowboy.

.........................

Basketball Recruitment: "2025 7' C Xavion Staton has completed an official visit to Stanford."

Staton would be another great get for Coach Kyle Smith.

.........................

Basketball Recruitment: "2025 6'6 CG Ty Virgil has completed an official visit to Pacific."

Virgil is out of the Sacramento area and is currently at Hillcrest Prep in Arizona.

.........................

HS Top Recruits: "Hearing Indiana, Michigan and Iowa are schools to watch for Winters Grady."

Again, Grady is from Oregon but playing at Prolific Prep in Napa, CA. My ear is to the ground but all I'm hearing are lonesome trains clanging back and forth. I'll close this out now before I burst into a an unforgettable (in the very bad sense) country song.

.........................

The Field of 68: "Joined by San JoseState MBB's Tim Miles, Josh Uduje and Will McClendon NOW!!"

By their selection to appear at Media Day, my interpretation is that Uduje will be the starter on the wing and McClendon will start at the point. The latter had a good if miniscule assist-to-turnover ratio last season with UCLA.

.........................

Recruits Zone: "INFO: 2028 prospect Dylan Ziegler tells me that he has received an offer from Stanford. Lengthy combo-guard who’s crafty with the ball in his hands. Has an advanced step back game."

Steve (Nes) Emeneke: "#100% COMMITTED LETS WORK"

The Big West Conference is a good level for the 6-foot-10 Emeneke who attends Archbishop Riordan. The Anteaters are a successful program and UC Irvine Coach Russell Turner has been in Orange County for 14 seasons so it's likely he'll be sticking around. Other offers: Pepperdine, Montana State, Montana, San Houston State, Penn and UC Riverside.

.........................

Reid Brear: "San Francisco State University 100% COMMITTED."

The 6-foot-6 Brear attends Del Oro High. He'll be playing for Coach Vince Inglima.

.........................

Brandon Jenkins: "Dillan Shaw, the No. 87 overall recruit in the senior class, has committed to St. Mary's."

The Gaels are gonna be alright. Shaw is 6-foot-7, 195 and out of the Southland.

"...Shaw is a long, versatile Swiss Army knife type prospect that impacts games all over"

.........................

Ani Umana: "4⭐️ Big Man Francis Chukwudebelu has committed to Santa Clara. A skilled post with a big-time wingspan & promising shooting touch. Francis is Coach Herb Sendek’s 2nd 2025 commitment."

The 6-foot-7 Dorrough is a 2028 prospect and attends Monterey Trail High. He's on the court with the Oakland Soldiers in the spring and summer.

.........................

PD Web: "Stanford has been in for 2026 Will Higgs (6’11 F) of NMHBoysHoops & Riverside Hawks."

.........................

Verbal Commits: "2027 Cushing Academy (MA) F/C Theophilous (Nigeria) Edema has received an offer from Stanford."

Other offers: Creighton, Virginia Tech, California, Clemson and North Carolina A&T. The 7-foot sophomore is a student ambassador at Cushing Academy which has me leaning to Palo Alto as his eventual choice.

.........................

Basketball Recruitment: "2025 6'7 SG Winters Grady has completed an official visit to Oregon."

The Prolific Prep player is from Lake Oswego, OR and it's 100 miles to Eugene. So...

.........................

The Santa Cruz Warriors have hired (now) former Valley Christian High Assistant Coach Alec Vucinich as a basketball operations/coaching associate. He is a graduate of University of LaVerne and from Scotts Valley High (near Santa Cruz) before that.

Mark Tollefsen is also moving into a basketball operations/coaching associate position. He played at San Ramon Valley High, USF and Arizona and then overseas.

News Bits

Anthony Moore: "1,000% committed 💜💜 go Wildcats!"

Out of Stockton's Lincoln High, the 6-foot-6 Moore sports a 4.0 grade point average in addition to his D1 level basketball skills. His other offers included Columbia, UCSD, Cal Poly, Montana, SUU, Northern Illinois, Pacific, UTRGV and High Point.

.........................

"[Jeff Goodman] AJ Dybantsa will cost somewhere in the $7-9 million range."

The 6-foot-9 Dybantsa is considered by many to be the top player in the 2025 recruiting class, a one-and-done vis-a-vis college hoops. A few talent scouts of late have him headed to BYU since he recently transferred to a prep school in Utah. Does BYU have that kind of money? Possibly. North Carolina, Kansas and Alabama are also in the running and their respective NIL moneypots can fulfill that kind of ask/requirement. The fifth possibility is Kansas State which laid out  $2,000,000 this season for the services of Coleman (Antelope High/Prolific Prep) Hawkins.

Here's Goodman again: "...“I would bet my house on the fact that they’re top five in NIL dollars, and might even be in the top three. And that says a lot about (Kansas State Coach) Jerome Tang; in a short time, he’s been able to connect with the people that matter. The guy is elite-level at connecting with people.”

Had no idea that a second sport at a college could raise such $$$.

.........................

Ty Virgil: "Blessed to receive an offer from University of the Pacific. Thank you to Coach Smart, Coach (Senque) Carey and the rest of the coaching staff for believing in me!!"

and

Ty Virgil: "I am blessed to receive an offer from Pepperdine University. Thank you to Coach Schilling and the rest of the coaching staff for believing in me!!"

Virgil stands 6-foot-6 and formerly attended Sheldon High but is now at Hillcrest Prep in Arizona.

.........................

Jon Rothstein has traveled to northern California from NYC and here are his starting five predictions for Bay Area college squads: (not sure what happened to USF)

Stanford: "Jaylen Blakes, Oziyah Sellers, Ryan Agarwal, Chisom Okpara, Maxime Raynaud"

California: "Jovan Blacksher, Andrej Stojakovic, Rytis Petraitis, Joshua Ola Joseph, Mady Sissoko"

St. Mary's: "Augustas Marciulionis, Jordan Ross, Luke Barrett, Paulius Murauskas, Mitchell Saxen"

Santa Clara: "Carlos Stewart, Adama Bal, Elijah Mahi, Johnny O'Neil, Christoph Tilly"

San Jose State University: "Will McClendon, Josh Uduje, Donavan Yap, Sadraque Nganga, Robert Vaihola"

Other Rothstein notes on St. Mary's and other teams:

"Who steps in for Aidan Mahaney at Saint Mary's? Jordan Ross. Playing with renewed confidence. Making his layups and limiting his turnovers. Breakout guy."

and

"A long-term name to keep an eye on from Saint Mary's: Oliver Faubert. 6-9 freshman has a chance. Remember The Name."

and

"Under-The-Radar Freshman: Mikey Lewis. Randy Bennett calls him "buckets". America will see why on November 4th against Towson."

and

"Paulius Murauskas, Mitchell Saxen, and Harry Wessels give Saint Mary's a massive frontcourt troika. Ridiculous size for the WCC."

and

"The sleeper at Santa Clara practice today? 6-foot-5 JUCO transfer Elijah Mahi. Really good athlete. Strong in PNR. Could be a starter for the Broncos."

and

"USC transfer Oziyah Sellers is shining here at Stanford practice. Playing with confidence and drilling shots. Looks primed to be the Cardinal's second-leading scorer in 2024-25 behind Maxime Raynaud."

and

"Under-The-Radar Glue Guy: Stanford's Jaylen Blakes. The Duke transfer has a chance to be one of the best on-ball defenders in the ACC. Plays with ruthless aggression on defense."

and

"San Francisco could have the WCC Freshman of the Year in back-to-back seasons. Tyrone Riley is a major talent. Lefty. Good size at 6-4. Different than Ryan Beasley, but could have a comparable impact as a freshman."

and

"Palpable Buzz at San Jose State regarding freshman guard Jermaine Washington. Always is shot ready on offense. An under-the-radar Mountain West freshman entering 2024-25."

and

"Under-The-Radar Mid-Major Star: UC Davis' Ty Johnson. Had 30 in the Big West Tournament title game against Long Beach State last March. He'll make you want to stream Big West games. REMEMBER THE NAME."

.........................

Jake Lieberman: "6'3 sophomore guard Cahmai Crosby out of Kilgore College is receiving interest from Utah, North Texas, Western Kentucky, Bradley, Pacific, Longwood, among others. Bowling Green, Northwestern State & App State have recently offered Crosby."

.........................

Delta Men's Basketball 2024-25

.........................

Connor Sheridan: "Thank you NxtProHoops for the write up!"

.........................

Jake Lieberman: "6'6 PG Jimma James out of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College tells me that he's receiving interest from Seton Hall, Oklahoma State, Rutgers, San Francisco, Charlotte, UAB, Utah State, Tulsa, Wyoming, ORU, Marshall, Oakland, LBSU & SJSU.

Offer from Central Michigan."

.........................

"Kendrick Perkins is grossly exploiting young athletes through their NIL rights"

.........................

Full Court Press Pod : A College BBALL Experience: "Watch out for the WCC hoops this year. We predict four teams in the #NCAAB Tourney - Gonzaga, St. Mary’s, Santa Clara and San Francisco."

.........................

"College Basketball Transfer Portal: Dates to Know"

The dates allowed to transfer/sign have been changed.

.........................

On the Santa Clara University coaching staff are two interesting hires, maybe a third.

Will Burkett's latest title is Assistant Coach/Operations and the 6-foot-4 former Bronco is a graduate of Santa Clara. As a player, he started out at St. Francis Central Coast Catholic, then Monterey Peninsula College before heading to Silicon Valley.

Now an assistant coach as well as video coordinator, 6-foot-3 Jackson Gion is a graduate of Bellarmine College Prep. He attended Linfield College (OR), graduated from Foothill College and then Sonoma State University. Gion also worked as a graduate student manager with Santa Clara from 2018 to 2020.

Bronco employee #3 is graduate student Andre Kelly. A bio has yet to be attached to his name but his head shot photo sure looks the same as the Andre Kelly who played four years at California. An imposing figure at 6-foot-9, 255, he graduated from Stockton's Lincoln High.

The 6-foot-5 Stokes is a 2025 prospect out of Dougherty Valley High (formerly at Dublin High) and Team Lillard. He recently visited Davis and also tripped to Montana mid-September. Davis offered him in late July. Prep Hoops recently ranked Stokes fifth out of 276 2025 northern California prospects. Leading Aggie returning scorer Ty Johnson is a guard and a senior.

.........................

Stepinac Basketball: "Congratulations to Adonis Ratliff & Darius Ratliff who both have been offered by Stanford University of the ACC!"

The former Ratliff is 6-foot-9 and is a member of the 2026 class. The latter Ratliff stands 6-foot-11 and is also a member of the 2026 class. Former NBA center Theo Ratliff is their father.

.........................

The 6-foot-6 2026 Toure also has offers from Arkansas, Pittsburgh, Alabama, Louisville, Texas A&M, Oregon, Yale and others. He's out of Guinea and currently attending a prep school in Connecticut.

From Guinea to Stanford? Please, please, please go for it.

.........................

Stepinac Basketball: "Congratulations to junior guard Jasiah Jervis on being offered by Stanford University of the ACC!"

Jervis is 6-foot-5 and in the 2026 class.

.........................

Verbal Commits: "2026 Sunnyslope (AZ) G Rider Portela has received an offer from UC Davis."

Davis Coach Jim Les has a number of offers out to backcourters. Remember that this one came after big guard Jalen Stokes committed.

.........................

Obinna Okezie: "Blessed to receive an offer from the University of Kansas. Thank you for the opportunity!"

and

"Obinna Ekezie Jr. is Making His Own Name"

Ekezie is a 7-footer, in the 2026 class and at Prolific Prep.

.........................

"Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga enters key season with Dikembe Mutombo on his mind"

and

"Warriors have seemingly unearthed new backcourt"

.........................

.........................

Preston Copeland: "Blessed to receive a D1 offer from San Jose State University!!"

Copeland stands 6-foot-8 and has previous offers from Appalachian State, Ball State, Cincinnati, College of Charleston, ECU, Georgetown, HPU, Indiana, Nebraska, Radford & Xavier.

SJSU continues offering North Carolina-based prospects.

.........................

Nathalio Gray Jr.: "Blessed to receive my first division 1 offer from Cal Men's Basketball. Thank you to the coaching staff for believing in me."

He's 6-foot-1, in the 2027 class and attends The Branson School.

.........................

Six players from northern California reside on the 2024-25 UC Davis roster:

6-foot sophomore guard Connor Sevilla (Dougherty Valley High)

6-foot-6 redshirt junior guard Marsalis Roberson (Bishop O'Dowd/California)

6-foot-7 sophomore forward/guard Derek Sangster (Archbishop Mitty)

6-foot-4 redshirt junior guard Sione Losé (Capital Christian High)

6-foot-6 senior forward Lukas Prongos (The Branson School/College of Marin)

6-foot-7 freshman Jacob Gilchrist (12 Bridges High)

.........................

Ira Winderman: "Zyon Pullin is participating in camp on an Exhibit 10 contract. The former Florida guard knows he’ll be ticketed to the Miami Heat’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. “It’s really just been definitely spend time in Sioux Falls and really just trying that development program, the history and track record it’s had,” Pullin said, per Winderman. “It’s a reason why I wanted to be here in the first place. So I think it’s just continue to lock in once we go down there and keep developing and see where it goes from there.”

Pullin graduated from College Park High.

.........................

Marquese Chriss has been traded to the Birmingham Squadron from the Wisconsin Herd in a G League trade. He graduated from Pleasant Grove High, colleged at Washington, played some in the NBA but has resided in the G League for a while. Chriss was drafted with the eighth pick in the 2016 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings.

.........................

Blake Murphy: "Raptors 905 are acquiring the rights to Jared Rhoden from College Park (Hawks affiliate) for the rights to Omari Moore (playing in Istanbul, Turkey) and a 2025 1st-round pick (via Capital City)."

Another G League deal, the 6-foot-4 Moore is a San Jose State University grad.

.........................

Jake Lieberman: "6'8 wing Travis Torain out of Panola Junior College (TX) is a freshman qualifier who shot 40% from deep at the Oklahoma Juco Jamboree. Tons of versatility and skill for his size. Dynamic prospect."

and

Panola Junior College: "Travis led the Ponies in scoring this weekend in Oklahoma. He knocked down six 3’s against Frank Phillips IN THE SECOND HALF! You will not find a better shooter/switchable defender at his size!!"

San Jose State University offered the 6-foot-7, 185 Torain (out of West High in Tracy) in early September 2023 when he was at Dream City Christian, an Arizona prep school. Torain has now moved on to a Texas community college so that Spartan offer may mutually be moot. In 2022, Oakland, UC San Diego and Seton Hall extended offers.

.........................

Colorado basketball has received four commits thus far, three guards and a 6-foot-5 wing. Of the backcourters, it's one point and two 6-foot-4 scoring guards, including the top prospect in the state of Colorado. So why this in a Nor Cal Basketball rag? Because 6-foot-5, 190 guard Courtney (Dublin High) Anderson redshirted with Colorado this past season and is returning to the court in 2024-25. Coach Tad Boyle obviously is feeling the need for backcourt talent after this season but let's hope Anderson performs early and well in his initial college playing experience.
