6-foot-3 Aidan (Campolindo High/St. Mary's) Mahaney is enduring a very tough season. Known as a points producer, he hasn't scored in four of the last five games for UConn. "2. Kendyl Sanders  6’7” CF IMG (Bradenton FL)/Los Angeles CA

Very versatile and athletic forward is a product of St. Bernard (Playa del Rey CA) where he played for Tony Bland (now an assistant at Washington/Big 10) and had a impressive academic profile (3.8 GPA). Sanders played well for Belmont Shore last grassroots season at the Pangos Terrific 24 (@ Indy), Pangos All-American Camp (Top 60 Game pick), Pangos Premier 80 and Pangos Sweet 16 (led squad to championship) but turned down late summer D-I overtures from the likes of UC-Irvine to spend a year under the tutelage of former long-time college coach Jimmy Carr to get stronger and better at IMG’s post-grad program. Kendyl can finish with either hand on his sweeping drives to the cup and has a very improved perimeter shot. Averaging 14.2 points (63% FG) and 8.1 boards per game for a balanced 18-4 IMG post-grad squad that is averaging 93 points per game this season. Father Yamen Sanders played at USC during the George Raveling years and his younger brother Kyle Sanders is a promising 6-10 freshman at Bishop Montgomery (Torrance CA) that is oozing with long-term potential. Penn, Harvard, San Jose State, Northern Illinois, Missouri State, George Mason and others showing interests for this nationally underrated player who plays winning basketball.

3. Kenyon DeMunyck 6’9” PF Link Prep (Branson MO) (related to Jourdan DeMunyck)

San Leandro CA (Bay Area) native with 7’3″ wingspan is a very long and athletic shot-blocker with a very underrated face-up ability. Kenyon is a terror running the lanes in transition and his length, bounce and huge upside make him an attractive long-term prospect. DeMuynck played with SoCal-based Belmont Shore last Spring and Summer and was an invitee to last June’s 2024 Pangos All-American Camp where his impressive play earned his a selection to the camp’s Top 60 Game and strong reviews from scouts there including NBADraft.net which remarked: “On offense he showed potential as a shooter, finished plays off with dunks and even had a few assists for good measure. He needs some work with his handles and there are question of consistency but he did create some follow up intrigue from two NBA scouts I was sitting near.” Among his signature games this season with Link Prep was 27 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 blocks vs. The New School (Branson MO). Colleges showing interest include San Francisco, San Jose State, Montana (will visit), TCU, Missouri, Pepperdine, UC-Irvine & Florida A&M.

5. Isaiah Carroll 6’7” WF Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood CA)

Sleek and athletic forward has impressive shooting touch (38% 3FG) and the ability to get to and finish above the rim on his drives to the cup. Isaiah is a core factor on the Fab 50’s #2 team in nation and his recent play includes efforts like his 22 points (5 threes) in H-W’s Trinity League win over St. Francis/La Canada CA at the Intuit Dome. Solid student (3.0 GPA) at arguably California’s top academic high school is getting recruiting attention from the likes of Cal Baptist, San Francisco, Grand Canyon, Seattle and Pepperdine. Love his long-term potential."

Jon Rothstein: "Saint Mary's sweeps Gonzaga to clinch the WCC regular season title. Gaels are now 25-4 after losing both Joshua Jefferson (Iowa State) and Aidan Mahaney (UConn). How is Randy Bennett not being mentioned as a National Coach of the Year candidate? He's on the list."

M-A's Trevor Cadigan Chooses CU

It feels amazing when everything aligns, gliding into place, and being such a rarity it intensifies and resonates while in its midst and often long afterwards. Maybe it's getting grades that result in a 4.0+ grade point average required to be accepted into a desired school or finally greeting a long lost friend or relative after years of absence. It also could even be that certain special someone saying yes to a marriage proposal.

Menlo-Atherton High's Trevor Cadigan recently enjoyed such an experience. He had multiple basketball programs across the country wanting him to come play and study (he sports a 4.1 grade point average). Grinnell College in Iowa was one of the few intriguing schools. The hoops program there is known for its high-scoring offense which currently is averaging 113.6 points per game.

Ultimately, the 6-foot-4 guard/wing had to narrow his offers down to a single choice. He did so after finding a school not too far away that checked all the boxes--Chapman University down in Orange County. Displaying his maturity, Cadigan called each of the other coaches involved in his recruitment, giving them the news.

With a student body population of 10,000, Chapman is a secular university affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ. Actually founded in 1861 and having evolved through multiple iterations, a recent ranking placed Chapman #121 out of 436 private and public research national universities. Its sports programs play at the DIII level.

So why the choice of Chapman? "My recruitment was a long process, involving East Coast and West Coast schools," Cadigan explained. "But Chapman has a great location and isn't far from the beach (20 minutes away), the guys (his soon to be teammates) I met were really fun to be around and the coaching staff is great. They truly believe in me and want me to be successful which is great for any player that wants to grow as a person on and off the court." Dan Krikorian is a 2007 Chapman graduate and assisted there for a decade before moving into the head coach role in August 2024. The Panthers are currently 14-9 overall, 7-7 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Cadigan participated in a basketball camp for high academic prep prospects held in LA back in July. "I finished second out of hundreds of kids in the three-point shooting contest, which led me to be recognized." Exchanging emails with many different coaches led to college visits and invites to other camps. He then played in another camp held at Chapman University in September playing well enough to catch the eye of the Panther coaching staff. From there, mutual interest was developed and then an offer was extended. Cadigan was sold but one hurdle remained--he needed to formally apply and get accepted by the school. That matter was resolved and a formal commitment to attend Chapman University and play basketball became cemented in place.

Asked if he has also selected a major, Cadigan said, "I'm good with numbers so it will be economics/data analytics."

He explained that the coaching staff hasn't gone into depth with him about his position and role for next season as yet but "I want to contribute right away and will likely play as a shooting guard and a small forward."

Video allows a quick and easy determination that he is a sharpshooter with excellent form but there are other elements to his repertoire. "I'm good with off-the-ball movement, always trying to cut and also screening to get my teammates open. I see the floor and focus on spacing so that defenses don't have it easier."

Plus, Cadigan is a captain this season and he understands his new role, the continuous loop regarding what he needs to supply and receive vis-a-vis his teammates and coaches.

One critical factor for all prospects is becoming known, the 'hey, I exist and here is what I can do' reputation build. Cadigan played on a new AAU team this past spring and summer, the Bay City Warriors coached by Frank Saric. "I was looking for an AAU team to get recognition (among college coaches) and a junior varsity coach at my high school, Kai Winterling, suggested I check this guy (Saric) out. He influenced me and I'm glad he did."

Basketball and baseball have been the sports in Cadigan's life. This despite a twin brother who plays multiple sports including football and lacrosse.

Basketball for Cadigan started very early, in kindergarten, involving a High Five Basketball league. "We have a video of it, it's always fun to look back and see where this whole journey started" according to Cadigan. He left the baseball diamond behind early in high school so as to focus on one sport and hone his skills set.

With the high school season currently entering the playoffs and with individual honors soon to be announced, Cadigan offered, "I want to win the PAL (Peninsula Athletic League) Most Valuable Player award. I never thought I could but I've really worked hard." As for team honors, he said, "we lost league last year but went 11-1 and won it this season. We also lost in the CCS division 1 championship the previous year and want to win there now." Menlo-Atherton fell 85-74 to Del Oro High last February 29 as down by four entering the fourth quarter, M-A was outscored 22-15.

So Cadigan achieved his long sought personal dream earlier this month as well as he and his teammates nabbing top team/league honors. Two out of three ain't bad as the song goes but Cadigan and Menlo-Atherton want to write a new anthem or two titled along the lines of three out of three and then four out of four is better. That's the hope and dream.

Cal-Hi Sports Northern California Boys Basketball Player of the Week Mark Lavrenov (Rocklin) Sr.

We start this week at a South Placer County school in the Sacramento suburbs that is north of the sprawling Galleria Shopping Mall in Roseville. It’s there where a 6-foot-9 center has been a dominating presence on the basketball court for the last several seasons.

Lavrenov had one of the best weeks of his career last week. It was a ho-hum 15-point, 16-rebound outing to lead the Thunder past Davis, 64-40, but that just set the stage for the second game. In a 77-46 win that the Rocklin faithful loved against arch-rival school Whitney of Rocklin, Lavrenov pumped it up for 31 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Not only that, but the big night put him at more 2,000 points for his career. Former UCLA center Brendan Lane is the only other player in Rocklin history to have scored 2,000 career points.

The Sacramento Bee also included Lavrenov in a list of top big men in local history. The future Sacramento State Hornet was one of the top players at Rocklin last season for a team that began 21-0 and ended 28-4. The two wins last week pushed the Thunder to 12-2 in the Sierra Foothill League and to 20-8 overall. They are the No. 2 seed for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D2 playoffs.

So far this season, Laverenov is averaging 23.4 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. He had 33 points and 19 rebounds in a game vs Whitney earlier this season and had a season high of 41 points in a win vs Laguna Creek.

...........................................

Jake Lieberman: "6'4 prospect Jake Davis from West Valley College has now been offered by Cal Baptist, I'm told. Radford & Old Dominion also offered earlier this week. Holds six offers. Averaging 14.7 points (52.0% 3PT) & 5.0 rebounds."

The Las Lomas High grad is a sophomore.

Josh Dubow: "Damian Lillard on his favorite Oakland athlete: "My favorite athlete growing up from Oakland was a guy named Paul Marigney, P-40. Oakland people know." Loved watching Marigney at Saint Mary's."

Marigney is a 6-foot-3 guard out of Castlemont High and the St. Mary's who is still playing (last noted as taking to the court recently (this season?) in Equador). It's hard to determine Marigney's actual age but it's around 42, 43, 44.

Noting Dubow's post, Marigney wrote: "I must’ve been doing something right in my life journey to have a NBA top 75 all-time player @damianlillard drop my name in an interview at All-Star weekend. This video is motivation and a inspiration for everyone on all levels. So, this is bigger than Dame or myself. This is big for our Oakland culture and this can really get us back on map and respected for our hoop talents in the city. When it comes to this hoop we have a lot to offer. Let’s Keep Swimming."
