Meet Matt McAndrews

This article is from 2023—the 6-foot-2 sophomore McAndrews is at San Jose City College now where he is averaging 14.4 points per game with a 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio.

When a love for the game of basketball is demonstrably palpable, rather than just solely verbalized, it's an exhilarating and contagious experience. Watch 6-foot-1 Foothill College guard Matt McAndrews for just a few minutes, whether it be in an actual game or practice or even in a pick-up setting and his fervor is everpresent. Heck, just talk with him for a while and it's apparent his hoops spirit comes straight from the heart.

However important that is to being successful, there is so much more to McAndrews.

He comes from a very successful program at Archbishop Mitty, one that went 86-14 during his varsity tenure. The Monarchs won a state championship in 2012, lost to Mater Dei in the title match the following season and then fell to Capital Christian in the state semifinals. "I didn't have to score a lot because we had so many options and so many scorers," McAndrews recalled.

He then moved over to Foothill College. "While I was at Mitty, I was kind of small," he explained. "College ball is physical so I didn't play first year (at Foothill).

In his second year as an Owl, McAndrews was all set to go. "I got my weight up and was playing in the San Francisco Pro-Am. But right after our summer tournament, I was playing in a park, went up to dunk and got undercut. I landed on my neck and fractured it."

"Being sidelined for me was really, really difficult. I had never been injured and here I was in bed for two or three weeks. It was a big blow mentally and I was depressed.

There Was An Upside

"I learned I really love basketball—this is what I want to do. But I also learned there's a lot more to life than basketball. I use it as a tool to be successful in the future. I've met so many people because of basketball, whether it be at Foothill or the Pro Am and adult leagues and I love it."

He returned to the court this season for Foothill and quickly put up eye-catching numbers: 18.1 points on 49%, 43% and 80% shooting, 3.4 assists plus 3.1 rebounds in his first seven games. However, he was slowed by two hernias and two tears in his lower abductors and decided to get those ailments resolved. He earned a medical redshirt and still retains four years of eligibility.

"I'm just happy to be playing still. I'm still in the gym everyday and it's the most fun I've had. I've been playing since I was seven or eight and I'm 21 now and finally realizing my potential."

What's The Genesis Of His Overall Enthusiasm?

"My Dad hardest worker I've ever seen. He's the guy who got me into basketball and a reason I still play. He helped in me learning about the game and seeing him work in his craft makes me work on mine. He knows what to do to be successful and I'll end up being successful if I use the same formula."

There's also this: "Part of it comes from my coaches over the years. [Foothill Head Coach] Matt Stanley, [Foothill Associate Head Coach] Jimmy Herrera. [Archbishop Mitty Head Coach] Tim Kennedy, my AAU coaches, they each put 100% into their teams. I am the same way with the same mindset. Their dedication makes me want to get better and they have pushed me towards thinking I want to be a coach in the future. [During a game], I'll look over at Stanley and see we're on the same page, thinking the same thing. Our mind's kind of click. The confidence in me has pushed me to thinking about coaching."

McAndrews' Mission

"My job as a point guard is that I don't want them to coach as much as they do. I want to be their coach on the floor. Give me the keys to the car."

One element that aided McAndrews' leadership role this season is the tightness of the Owl squad. "Our team this year was one of the closest ever, 1-15 just really good guys. It's like a family with 15 best friends. We knew how to talk to each other and knew everyone's playing style. I went around meeting the guys on the team and my job was to make it easier, to help them play into their game. I want to be the type of player giving out shots.

"I would watch the high school tapes [of my teammates] and their playing styles. I learned what they did as seniors. The old tapes showed what they were and could be. I saw my job as raising their confidence like when they were back in high school and get them to play like that at Foothill."

About his basketball IQ, McAndrews offered, "It's a lot easier to develop when you're fully invested and around the same thing 24/7 continuously getting new information. I started watching a lot more film of my game and others because I'm always trying to learn new things, Nothing is forced for me, it's all natural and I love it. I also like math so it's fun for an hour and a half when I walk into math class."

However, there is one prominent line of demarcation separating him from his teammates and it runs through Cleveland. While citing Jason Williams and Steve Nash as inspirations, McAndrews is a huge LBJ fan. "My teammates hate me because I talk about him (LeBron James) all the time. I study his game and he's made me see the game slower. He plays basketball like it should be played and is the best ever at impacting the game without scoring."

"Cal-Hi Sports Northern California Boys State Basketball Player of the Week Conor Maguire (International, San Francisco) Sr.

It’s not many blocks from the Potrero Hill neighborhood in San Francisco where International High School is located to Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors. It’s at International High where we find this week’s boys’ honoree for Northern California.

Head coach Paul Cortes nominated senior guard Conor after what he did during a senior night celebration last week that saw him rack up 14 three-pointers and 63 points in a 100-55 triumph over Drew of San Francisco. We have a photo of the official scorebook to prove the totals.

Many were wondering about CIF North Coast Section and all-time San Francisco city records after Maguire’s big night. Our state records include everyone who has scored 64 points or more, but not 63. Based on that, and with the stipulation that it’s possible there’s another 63-point total from the NCS or SF city annals that we don’t have, Conor would now rank No. 4 on the city list behind 82 by Winters Patterson of Balboa (1995), 78 by Walter Jackson of Balboa (1992) and 72 by Joel Black of Lick-Wilmerding (1966). For the NCS, Maguire would sit at No. 3 behind Black and Don Lyons of CSD Berkeley at 69 (1964).

For the 14 three-pointers, which was helped by Conor nailing 11-of-15 on threes in the first half alone when he had 42 of his points, that is a new NCS record. It broke the previous best in our exclusive Cal-Hi Sports state record files of 12 firs set in 2004 by Chad Lichau of Napa Justin-Siena and tied in 2023 by then freshman Saddiq Alarbesh of Napa Christian. We have no reported total from any other San Francisco schools in the AAA, WCAL or others with 12 or more, either.

In the same game in which Maguire had 63 points, he also had 10 rebounds and five assists. He had 42 points in the first half and was an amazing 11-of-15 shooting three-pointers. In other games earlier this season, Conor had 27 points with six rebounds, four assists and six steals vs San Domenico and 26 points with 10 rebounds and six assists vs Gateway.

“Conor led us to a final four finish in the CIF NorCal D5 playoffs last season has elevated our small school to its best run in school history the last couple of years,” Cortes said. “This was his senior night and he went out in a huge way."

"Cal-Hi Sports Northern California Boys State Basketball Player of the Week Johnnie Jones (Fairfield) Sr.

The search for the Northen California Boys State Basketball Player of the Week takes us just east of the Bay Area to the eastern edge of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section and a couple miles west of Travis Air Force Base, and it’s in Fairfield that we land and find this week’s winner at Fairfield High.

Jones has been lighting it up for the Falcons all season and is the team’s top scorer by almost 10 points per game, but it’s his most recent performances that earn him a statewide honor to go with local recognition.

Last week, in a 61-43 win over crosstown arch rival Armijo, the 6-foot-3 senior forward just missed a double-double after going for a season-high 32 points, on a blistering 14-of-18 overall shooting from the field and 2-for-3 on three-pointers.

In his prior game a 63-54 loss to Sacramento Foothill, Jones had a double-double 27 points and 12 rebounds. In his most recent game, which was played on Monday night of this week, in a 57-45 win versus Sacramento Valley, he had 16 points and six rebounds.

So far this season for the 18-6 Falcons, Jones is averaging 21.0 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Postseason honors for him should be aplenty."

Out of France and listed as a guard on the MJC roster, the newcomer is shooting 49% overall and 81% on 52 foul shots. He only has seven fouls credited to him so far this season, is 40 to 33 in assists to turnovers, with 27 steals and 28 blocked shots. His team is currently 20-3, 11-0. In late January, he enjoyed 40 points against Folsom Lake College.

What's interesting is Esso-Essis has been playing since November and three programs offer now?

.......................

Modesto Junior College Men's Basketball: "Malachi Miller has received an offer from Division 2 California State University Stanislaus (CCAA)."

Out of Central Catholic High, the 6-foot-4 Miller is a sophomore averaging 16.7 points while shooting 45%, 37% and 83% respectively. He has been whistled for just eight fouls all season (what's going on with foul calls on this team?), is 56 to 40 with assists to turnovers, has 20 steals plus 22 blocked shots.

Blake Bastani: "Thank you NERR Hoops for recognizing me as the #4 player in the state (of New Hampshire with New Hampton School.)

The 6-foot-4 Bastani is a 2027 prospect who previously played at Miramonte High but is now attending New Hampton School. He's an excellent shooter.

Jon Rothstein: "Stanford's Oziyah Sellers in 2025:

  • 15.1 PPG.
  • 53.6% from the field.
  • 54.3% from 3-point range.
  • 93.8% from the FT line.

The best guard in the ACC that not enough people are talking about."

Rothstein wouldn't know this and therefore wouldn't write this post if Stanford was not in the ACC this season.

6-foot-2 junior combo guard Chris (Jesuit High/Sacramento State University/Santa Rosa JC) Holley of Sonoma State University has the best assist-to-turnover numbers in the CCAA with 87 assists to 35 turnovers. He is averaging 11.1 points, while shooting 54%, 46% and 70% respectively. Might a D1 program be interested since Sonoma is shutting down its athletic programs?
