Not gonna happen, even as a bounceback if he first signs somewhere else. Coach Henry Bibby should get Shaq on this kid but the 6-foot-8 Phillips would require more NIL $$$ than the Hornets have available.

Ahsan Huff of Columbia College (and Vanden High) is averaging a more than solid double-double this season consisting of 14.9 points and 16.4 rebounds plus 2.2 assists as well as 1.0 blocked shots while shooting 44% from the field and 60% at the foul line. All this in 14 games/starts for the 6-foot-7 sophomore frontcourter. Columbia is eighth in the state in offensive rebounding with an almost five rebound per game advantage and that figure is certainly aided by the efforts of Huff who also sports a 4.0 grade point average. The Claim Jumpers are currently 11-4 and play in the Central Valley Conference.

"Dillan Shaw is the next great Gael" Tuck Clarry

"Saint Mary’s isn’t as much on the bubble as they are looking to secure the best seeding possible, as they continue their dominance over the general field of the WCC. The Gaels have been pushed multiple times early on, but their disciplined style of play and ensemble of gritty players staved off scares against both Seattle at home and LMU on the road.

With a handful of impressive performers in larger roles, the most enticing appears to be the impact that freshman Dillan Shaw can have on a basketball game in a multitude of ways. Following the Gaels’ loss to Boise State in mid-December, Shaw has been a starter, playing over 30 minutes per game. Through the first four games of WCC play, he leads the conference in effective field goal percentage, offensive rating and is 7th in lowest turnover rate.

Shaw is a solid two-way piece for Randy Bennett’s team, providing length and switchability to pair alongside Paulius Murauskus and help shore up the physical limitations of the backcourt. He holds a defensive rating of 93.5 on the season and a steal per game.

The young wing originally served a 3-and-D role to start the season, but has become increasingly a dependable decision-maker in the offense, providing adept decision-making for a freshman in his expanded minutes. Headed into conference play, Shaw averaged 0.9 assists per contest and was asked to mostly finish plays. In WCC play, he’s averaging 2.8 assists per game and just 0.5 turnovers.

Since Mikey Lewis’ dip in efficiency, it’s been Shaw that has taken on more of an offensive load for Saint Mary’s, leading them in three-point attempts and alternating third option duties with point guard Joshua Dent behind Murauskus and Lewis, who has shifted more to attacking off the bounce and inside the arc. The role Shaw is playing is the largest for a freshman in Moraga since Aidan Mahaney’s first season."

D1 Scores

Was it simply ginormous typos? A scoreboard malfunction? Well, Notre Dame entered Maples Pavilion and came away with a, yes, 47-40 victory over Stanford! Correct, a time clock was utilized. The point totals at the half were 22-17. The Cardinal shot 23% overall, 4-30 on three-point attempts. The most Stanford baskets made was three by a pair of players. Notre Dame out-rebounded the home squad 48-36.

Stanford then bounced back to defeat #16 Louisville 80-76 at Maples Pavilion behind 28 points from freshman guard Ebuka Okorie. Teammate Chisom Okpara provided 17 points plus a team best eight boards. Another Cardinal, Ryan Agarwal, shot 4-4 on three-point attempts in scoring 12 points. game recap

........................................

Host Pacific manhandled fellow West Coast Conference member Oregon State 84-53, winning the first half 49-34 and then the second 20 minutes 35-19. The Tigers shot 54% overall, 52% on 23 trey attempts and went 18-24 at the charity stripe. 6-foot-7 Canadian Ralph Elias led in scoring per usual with 24 points (10-10 at the foul line) and TJ Wainright contributed 17 points, going 5-6 on his three-point shots. Pacific is now 10-6, 1-2 in the WCC.

Pacific then welcomed Pepperdine into Stockton and happily notched a 74-69 victory as Ralph Elias shot 7-13, 3-5, 5-6 in scoring 22 points and he also pulled down 10 boards for a double-double. The Tigers shot 53% and won the battle of the boards by 11 but did commit 18 turnovers.

.......................................

UC Davis won both 20 minute sessions in defeating visiting Cal State Northridge 89-80 powered by 23 points via Connor (Dougherty Valley High) Sevilla. The 6-foot-1 junior shot 9-15, 5-10, 0-1. For Northridge, 6-foot-6 Mahmoud (Santa Teresa High/West Valley College) Fofana played well with 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Hosting Cal State Bakersfield, UC Davis fell 81-79 in spite of all five Aggie starters scoring in double figures as Connor (Dougherty Valley High) Sevilla finished with 12 points on an efficient 4-6, 3-4, 1-2 accuracy. His 24-footer at the 0:54 mark brought UCD within three at 77-74 before Davis evened up the score. But a Bakersfield driving layup with five seconds left proved to be the difference as an Aggie trey attempt went amiss at the buzzer.

.......................................

In a 90-70 thorough road win for Louisville, the visitors out-shot California 46% to 34% and out-boarded the Bears 46-31. Chris Bells led with 20 points and Justin Pippen contributed 17 plus a team best five assists. The ACC opener for both teams left the Cardinal at 11-2 overall, 12-2 for Cal.

California then reversed course with a thriller, a 72-71 come-from-behind victory over visiting Notre Dame. 6-foot-2 junior guard Dai Dai Ames might be elected chancellor of the school right now as he finished with 23 points but how he managed them in such a short time frame is nothing short of remarkable. With 0:11 on the clock in the second half, he buried a 25-footer to bring the Bears within one at 69-68. Six seconds later, he tied the game at 71 with yet another 25-footer. Having been fouled on the play, he subsequently nailed the free throw for the eventual margin as ND missed a longer trey attempt just before the buzzer. Cal now stands 13-2. Write For California game report.

The Notre Dame coach was not happy with the officiating.

Santa Clara traipsed up to the City of Roses and grabbed a hard-fought 92-85 success versus Portland. Elijah (West Valley College) Mahi paced the Broncos with 22 points on 9-13, 2-5, 2-2 shooting. But even though the Broncos shot a very nice 54% overall, Portland concluded the contest at an en fuego 59% and that has to be cleaned up and soon before the Gonzagas and the St. Mary's appear on the schedule.

Going to 12-4 on the season, 3-0 in the West Coast Conference, Santa Clara made sure not to slip up against visiting Pepperdine, winning 82-63 behind Christian Hammond's 20 points. The Broncos out-shot the visitors a solid 49% to 39% but still went just 8-30 from three-point range.

Again at the familiar Leavey Center, Santa Clara was 'on' against San Diego and easily won 98-70. Christian Hammond again was the high scorer with 21 points on 9-13, 1-3, 2-2 shooting and teammate Elijah (West Valley College) Mahi led with nine assists and also grabbed seven boards. The Broncos shot 50% overall and out-boarded the Toreros 49-25.

On the road, USF fell 70-62 to Oregon State after holding a 30-25 halftime lead. David Fuchs led the Dons with 19 points plus 13 rebounds and teammate Robbie (Dougherty Valley High) Beasley tallied 13 points. But Coach Chris Gerlufsen's bench provided just eight points and six rebounds. USF shot 40% overall, 4-21 from long distance while OSU was much hotter 50% as a team, plus 48% on 23 trey attempts.

Back at The Sobrato Center, USF downed San Diego 74-64 with Tyrone Riley IV busting out for 22 points on 9-15, 2-5, 2-3 shooting. Teammate Robbie (Dougherty Valley High) Beasley led with six assists. The Dons had but a one-point lead after 20 minutes but rose up in the second half. San Francisco now sport a 10-6 overall record, 2-1 in the West Coast Conference.

Again at the Sobrato Center, USF bested pesky Portland 73-68 utilizing 15 points plus 10 boards via David Fuchs (he stumbled at the foul line, shooting just 6-14) plus 14 points, six boards, four assists and three steals from guard Robbie (Dougherty Valley High) Beasley. The Dons succeeded despite making 38% of all shot attempts versus 47% for UP. But USF prevailed by making three more treys and six more free throws.

........................................

Thanks primarily to a 38-20 second half, St. Mary's bopped Pepperdine 72-45 with Paulius Murauskas' 19 points leading the charge. Sophomore guard Mikey Lewis played just 19 minutes and scored seven points. Coach Randy Bennett's crew shot 54% and defensively held Pepperdine to 35% overall.

Powered by a 42-27 halftime lead, the host Gaels handled Portland 78-57 behind 24 points, seven rebounds and five assists from forward Paulius Marauskas. Joshua Dent paced the Moraga-ites with seven assists. As a team, St. Mary's shot 49% to just 34% for the Pilots.

Then, Seattle led St. Mary's 44-39 at the half. But this was the Gaels, and at home. So, Coach Randy Bennett's guys pulled it together and won out big at 93-76. Paulius Murauskas played extra-large with 28 points and 15 boards, seven offensive and teammate Dillan Shaw enjoyed 20 points, powered by 6-8 three-point shooting. ........................................

San Jose State University led San Diego State University 53-52 with 12:00 remaining but the Aztecs finished strong to corral an 81-68 success in San Jose. This despite Spartan guard Colby Garland pouring in 30 points (14-14 at the charity stripe). His teammate, starting big Yaphet Moundi, played the first 10 minutes and then departed for the remainder of the game due to a lower leg injury. In 54 minutes total, SJSU's bench tallied just two points and the team shot 34% overall, 23% on three-point attempts. BJ (Modesto Christian High) Davis led the Aztecs with 18 points, accomplished in 21 minutes.

In Logan, Utah, where the Spartans haven't played a close game in some time, the trend continued as Utah State took down San Jose State University 96-78. But to SJSU's credit, they led 51-48 at halftime. Spartan sophomore guard Jermaine Washington led with 18 points on 6-9, 3-4, 3-6 shooting. USU freshman point Elijah (Clayton Valley Charter High) Perryman enjoyed the best output of his young career with 13 points and by far a team high 10 assists -- all in 22 minutes. San Jose finally shot well at 45% overall but unfortunately allowed the Aggies to shot 63%. Utah State tallied 52 points in the paint as injuries and lack of frontcourt depth limited SJSU's defensive effectiveness inside.
