"Fullerton Overtakes San Francisco City for Top Spot - West Valley's upset of San Francisco City drops the Rams; Modesto, Ventura, Yuba, Sequoias make big moves. Three previously unranked teams move into poll"

West Valley College got by CCSF 66-58 up in the Delta tournament in mid-December. The WVC losses to date are close games: 59-53 in the opening season game to host Fullerton, 58-55 to host CCSF, 65-62 at home to Las Positas College, 72-69 at home to Feather River College and a not so tight 81-68 to host City College San Jose.

But add another one, article courtesy of Ben Seimas/Santa Cruz Sentinel:

"Redshirt freshman forward Ben Dotten had a career outing on offense, and the Cabrillo College men’s basketball team reaped the benefits in its upset of West Valley on Friday night.

Dotten scored a season-high 19 points and the No 27 state-ranked Seahawks stunned the No. 12 Vikings 72-66 in their Coast Conference South Division game.

It was the Seahawks’ first win over the Vikings since Jan. 30, 2019, and snapped an 11-game skid against their foe.

“Huge bounce-back win for us,” Seahawks coach James Page said. “After letting one get away on Wednesday, we showed a lot of grit in playing the way we did tonight.”

Dotten, co-MVP of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League with Aptos’ Isaiah Ackerman as a Santa Cruz senior in 2023-24, entered the game averaging 7.6 points per game.

He made a pair of 3-pointers and scored 16 points by halftime to set the tone for the Seahawks (15-6 overall, 4-1 division).

“Ben is one of our most talented players and I recruited him so hard versus some of the best JUCOs and D-II schools in California,” Page said. “He is going to be an all-conference, conference MVP caliber player by the time he leaves. Tonight was a glimpse of what he’s capable of. He’s battled some knee injuries that forced him to redshirt last year and slowed his start to this year, but he’s going to be a guy who takes us over the top as the season goes on.”

Cabrillo rebounded from its loss to No. 16 San Jose City (16-5, 5-0) on Wednesday in grand fashion.

West Valley (14-6, 3-2), the South Division champ the past two seasons, has more conference losses this season than it did the past two seasons combined.

Cabrillo trailed 18-8 early, but rallied to take a 28-27 lead by the half. The Seahawks found another gear in the second half, when they outscored their opponent 44-39.

Sophomore forward Mike Carson scored 15 points for the Seahawks, who made 18 of their 22 free throws in the second half. They finished 22-of-32 shooting from the line.

Sophomore forward Skylarr Redwood returned from injury after sitting out Wednesday’s loss, and scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half. Freshman guard Damani Wilkerson added 10 points, eight coming in the second half.

Cabrillo’s Charlie Kosta (eye) and Carson (hand) exited the game in the second half with injuries.

Freshman guard Antonio Kellogg Jr. and freshman forward David Manea each scored 10 points to pace the Vikings. Sophomore forward William Amoah scored nine points. Ackerman, a freshman guard, scored all seven of his points in the second half."

Gaels' offense is back Tuck Clarry, West Coast Round-up 1/15/2026

"After coming back from the Bahamas, the highly efficient shooting took a bit of a dive. After shooting 40% from deep in the month of November, Randy Bennett’s team shot 28.9% from deep in December. Mikey Lewis’ torrid scoring fizzled out to close out 2025, averaging 9 points per game in the final month of the year after averaging 17.4 points in November.

However, the Gaels have a strong defense and the primary option in Paulius Marauskus to weather offensive woes, although they did lose their lone matchup against a Quad 2 opponent during that timeframe. Due to the slow pace at which Saint Mary’s likes to play, drastic dips in efficiency make the margins precariously thin.

Certainly, in their last three games and for the better part of January, the offensive numbers have begun to return to the Gaels’ favor, making them a clear tier above any league opponent outside of their rivals in Spokane. That was evident in their 14-point win over San Francisco on the road this Tuesday, an environment in which they had lost last season.

In that win, sophomore point guard Joshua Dent bullied his matchup of Ryan Beasley, scoring 19 points and recording 7 assists and 4 steals with 0 turnovers. Dent has been unbelievable for Saint Mary’s in conference play, holding a 142 offensive rating while playing over 37 minutes per game. The Aussie shot 26.7% from three in non-conference games but has been a 44% shooter from deep in league play.

Dent’s performance has helped lift the scoring burden for Lewis, who has seen improved efficiency as of late. Lewis is coming off back-to-back double-digit scoring outings after four games scoring 8 points or less. Getting both guards going at the same time would help them tremendously as they face Santa Clara on Saturday and Gonzaga on the road to close out the month."
