The San Jose State University Spartan Recruiting Season

For something new, I attempted to track San Jose State University's 2025 recruiting season, an arduous task and one that admittedly stands incomplete because not every offer appears publicly.

As you'll see, lots of offers were extended, some with the hope of landing a prospect on the rebound from his original school. Some were simply long shots.

Tariq Lofton Will Be Heading North

5-foot-11 point guard Tariq Lofton has gone from, in his own words, "not playing a lot last year" as a junior at Folsom High to earning a scholarship with the Ashland-based Southern Oregon University program. To his credit, it's a very rare accomplishment to move from intermittent high school court time to joining a four-year college basketball program.

Here's Brandon White, the coach of Lofton's Jaylen Wells Elite AAU squad, on his protégé: "Tariq was a joy to coach. Coming into the spring, I think he felt like he had a lot to prove and he really exceeded our expectations. Tariq sees the floor really well and he finished in the top 10 in assists on the circuit." White added, "He's a really high character kid and has a 4.0 grade point average. His parents were great and super supportive of our program. Tariq's going to do great things at Southern Oregon."

Watch here...

The Southern Oregon coaching staff first witnessed Lofton at an AAU tournament in Redding, highlighting the importance of participating in AAU play.

NXTPRO hoops scout Camden Rine was impressed with Lofton's play this July during national tournament action, writing "he is a speedster down the court. Reminds me of Tyrese Maxey (76ers) with his quick twitch abilities and change of direction...he made winning plays all night playing at his own pace and controlling the tempo of the game.

Lofton and his family visited SOU the first week of this month and he obviously came away impressed. "I saw it as the best opportunity for me. I liked the coaching staff, the people (on campus) and the campus itself."

What will he be bringing when he arrives for the 2026-27 season? "I'm good at getting my teammates open with kick-out passes and drop-offs and I'm one of the better defenders." He called himself "an all-around player."

Lofton understands and appreciates what is required of someone playing at the point, the most critical position on the court. "I've always wanted to be a point guard. You have to be a leader and I'm vocal on the court." He also noted his unselfish approach saying "I'm not a scoring point," something proliferating in the National Basketball Association.

Southern Oregon's starting point guard will be graduating after this coming season so opportunity will be there for Lofton to earn playing time. "It will be me and another point guard recruit competing."

As for his best basketball moment, it was recent, coming "when we won Section last season."

Lofton participated in multiple sports growing up and that is playing out right now as he decided to go out for football in his last year of high school (he is now attending Casa Roble High). "I'm a slot wide receiver and a kick returner." He has also been involved in the 400, 200, 4x400 relay track events throughout high school.

Honoring his father who played basketball and football at the NAIA level, Lofton cited him as a major influence as "he's coached me a lot." Former Folsom High guard Malik Rose also received credit as a hoops mentor as did Coach White and Coach Brendan Erickson. Being inclusive, Lofton also credited his longtime basketball friends "for keeping me going since we were little."

He is looking to major in electrical engineering.

Lofton is headed to a winning program as the Raiders finished 23-11 overall, 14-8 in conference play in the 2024-25 season

But first comes Lofton's final prep basketball season.

De'Undrae Perteete Jr. is Down by the Riverside (and Loving It)

Though just a sophomore, 6-foot-5 De'Undrae 'Dre' Perteete Jr. could already write a book on basketball recruiting. First, he graduated from Salesian Prep and decided on D2 Westmont College in Montecito, near Santa Barbara as his collegiate destination. After a very successful freshman season, one in which he was named PacWest Conference Freshman of the Year, Perteete learned his coach, Landon Boucher, was stepping away from the college coaching ranks. So just a year out of high school, he faced a conundrum. Should he wait to see who the new Westmont coach is versus move on in pursuit of a new home?

Impressed by Perteete's freshman accomplishments, Cal State San Bernardino Head Coach Gus Argenal wanted the sophomore-to-be to move further south and join up. But then the head coaching position opened at D1 UC Riverside and Argenal applied for and landed that position. A Nor Cal-er by birth and a native of Lafayette plus a graduate of De La Salle High and UC Davis, Argenal's strong interest in Perteete continued and he extended a new Riverside offer. Perteete said yes in mid-to-late May and is now a Highlander.

So why Argenal and UC Riverside? "I couldn't pass it up, Perteete explained. "I'll be playing in the Big West Conference so the competition will be much better and I'm striving to get better." He recalled being positioned while at Salesian for major minutes against fours and fives because of team size deficiencies so backcourt minutes are still relatively new to him. Perteete is also on the young side having arrived at Westmont while still 17 (for a few weeks).

Being in the Big West Conference now will also provide him with the opportunity to face off with a former Salesian-ite as well as hoops friends and acquaintances. 6-foot-3 sophomore point guard Aaron Hunkin-Claytor is a former Salesian teammate and currently a starter at Hawai'i. Jalen Stokes is a 6-foot-5 freshman shooting guard now at UC Davis but formerly of Dougherty Valley High and Dublin High. Now at UC Irvine, 6-foot-10 forward Nes Emeneke possesses Archbishop Riordan roots while fellow Anteater frosh Luke Isaak is a 6-foot-5 San Ramon Valley High alum.

And why basketball for Perteete and not another sport? "I played basketball, baseball and football growing up, stopping football after my sophomore year  and also dropping baseball before I picked it up again as a senior." However, his father was the head basketball coach at Skyline High in Oakland from 2019-2023 and also assisted one season at College of Marin in 2015-16.

Perteete sees his parents as his biggest influences and cherishes that distinction. "My Dad is a big sports guy and my Mom always stressed doing what my heart desires and makes me happy."

As for offering thanks, besides to his parents, Peteete noted "Coach Landon Boucher at Westmont as he let me make mistakes because he believed in me like Coach Argenal does." Perteete averaged an amazing 35 minutes an outing as a freshman.

One best college basketball moment for Perteete truly stands out: I scored 34 points (eight treys) in a game against against Azuza Pacific. It was really special because my teammates were jumping up and down and hugging me, and tossed water on me when we go into the locker room." Perteete shot 10-15 overall, 8-10 from long distance and 6-6 at the foul line in that contest.

He noted that his leadership style has evolved the further along in his hoops tenure. "I'm a naturally reserved person and in college so far, I'm much more leading by example. But I was much more vocal at Salesian because we had a roster full of younger guys. I had to."

Perteete is a business major at UC Riverside but he is undecided at the moment whether his focus will be on entrepreneurship, accounting or management.

"Myles Jones reclassifies to 2025 class and signs with Stanford"

The 6-foot-3 Modesto Christian combo guard pulls a surprise. Jaylen Petty eventually signed with Texas Tech after a short committment to The Farm. Call me biased but the Stanford environment versus TT (Lubbock), c'mon. A Stanford education versus TT, c'mon. TT's Grant McCasland is an excellent college hoops coach but so is Kyle Smith. Right now, the Big 12 is a better basketball conference than the ACC but that's a fact that needs to be measured after each season.

He ain't going 3,000 miles for a college at Rutgers' level of play, that's for sure. Not likely even heading to Berkeley. Stanford hasn't offered as yet but will. The national power programs will get involved sooner rather than later and my guess is that's where he lands. His brother is a very promising football talent.
