Cal-Hi Sports Northern California Boys Basketball Player of the Week Adam Pengel (Rancho Cotate High, Rohnert Park) Sr.

The search for the boys Northern California State Basketball Player of the Week takes to the Redwood Empire/North Bay portion of the CIF North Coast Section where we our destination is the heart of Sonoma County and the city of Rohnert Park.

It’s at Rancho Cotate High where we find this week’s award winner who plays his home games at the beautiful, nearly new gymnasium portion of the school’s the state-of-the-art $57 million TAG Center.

Pengel has been pounding down the points all three years of his Cougars’ varsity career but with his recent accomplishments this was the ideal week to honor the 6-foot senior guard.

Last week, in a 59-57 victory over Mill Valley Tamalpais that got Rancho Cotate to 10-2 this season, Pengel poured in 30 points (one three-pointer) with three rebounds, three assists and one steal. It was the third 30-point or more effort for Pengel this season.

Two weeks ago, in a 59-58 victory over Casa Grande of neighboring Petaluma, Pengel went over the career 1,000-point mark after finishing with 28 points, including shooting 5-for-8 from outside the arc, plus nine rebounds.

The very next day, Pengel matched his season high of 37 points (4-for-7 on 3-pointers) in a 67-60 victory over Novato. The previous week Adam had 37 points (6-for-8 on 3-pointers), three rebounds and four steals in an 89-49 win against Sonoma Valley.

So far this season, Pengel is averaging 22.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game and he’s shooting 42 percent from outside the arc on 32-of-76 on 3-pointers. The 22.9 points is the No. 3 reported mark in the North Coast Section."

IN CCAA action on Thursday

Stanislaus State bested San Francisco State 67-55 behind 29 points from 6-foot-3 guard Jeremiah (Salesian Prep) Jones. He shot 10-16, 5-9 and 4-4 respectively and added five rebounds.

JoJo (Piedmont High) Murphy poured in 28 points on 7-13, 4-8 and 10-13 shooting respectively and 6-foot-6 freshman teammate Cortevious (Granada High) Taylor supplied 15 points alongside six boards as host Chico State edged Cal Poly Pomona in overtime 83-81. Demarreya (Enterprise High/Yuba College) Lewis-Cooper scored 24 points on 8-11, 3-5 and 5-6 shooting respectively for CPP.

Sonoma State proved to be six points better than Cal State Los Angeles at 76-70 with 6-foot-2 JC transfer Chris (Jesuit High/Sacramento State/Santa Rosa Junior College) Holley performing large with 15 points, nine assists and six rebounds. CSLA received a strong effort from guard Shane (Salesian Prep) Bell who enjoyed 14 points, six assists and five caroms.

Saturday scores

UC Merced had little trouble with UC Santa Cruz 75-51 as Cameron (Bishop O'Dowd) Brown provided 16 points on 8-11 overall shooting for the Valley-ites.

Landon (Wood High) Seaman filled the stat sheet with 20 points, six rebounds, three assists, a pair of 2 steals plus a blocked shot as Menlo College bested Fresno Pacific 76-64.

Dominican University took an 80-69 home win against William Jessup University as guard Darius (Cabrillo College) Best's 23 points led the victors in scoring. With the choicest of beards, Aussie Aydan Janssan co-led WJU with 13 points alongside Ja'Maris Blackmon. Jessup led by 10 at halftime.

In CCAA action on Saturday

Despite 18 points and six assists from Chris (Jesuit High/Sacramento State/Santa Rosa Junior College) Holley and five players contributing double figure scoring, the Seawolves fell short at home 85-81 to Cal State Dominguez Hills. Coming from the JC ranks, Holley has now more than gotten his feet wet, he's swimming and the water is just fine.

It was the Murphy-Kerr show once again as JoJo (Piedmont High) Murphy finished with 23 points and Isaiah (St. Francis High) Kerr contributed 19 in Chico State's 81-67 homecourt victory versus Cal State University San Bernardino. A 41-28 second half broke the game open. Murphy, however, was charged with seven turnovers--call it an aberration since he sports 50/33 assist-to-turnover season numbers.

Junior newcomer Andrew (West Campus High/Sacramento City College) Ferrara-Jones scored 39 points, shooting 14-17, 8-11, 3-5 respectively, in the UC Santa Cruz 89-85 road win versus Colorado College on Monday. Sophomore teammate Miles (Bishop O'Dowd) Burrows finished with 21 points on 8-13, 3-5 and 2-2 shooting respectively.

Dennis Marshall: "A whole lot of programs realizing that transfer portal ain’t garnering the results they expected. Hell, u can get a good high school kids that can average 3, 4, 5 ppg. That’s what a lot of transfers are doing. There’s only a handful of difference makers. Not as many as made out to be."

The low majors don't necessarily get to pick and choose. Realistically, most mid majors too. Currently, college experience is manna from heaven for college coaches since so many collegiate players hit the transfer portal. It's true that high schoolers are getting the short shrift in recruiting since developing a prospect or a prospect developing in a couple of years is a feat not encountered much nowadays for multiple reasons.

Here's a January 7 anecdote posted by Samantha Croston: "The announcer for MBB just had a fascinating story for why Chris Bell is coming off the bench instead of starting. Autry told the announcers that Chris Bell was struggling mentally w/ the pressure of starting, and by coming in off the bench, he could switch his mindset from “when am I coming out of the game” to “when am I going in the game.” So far tonight, Bell is 3-for-3 from the field and has 7 points and leads all scorers."

"Rookie Jaylen Wells registered his first double-double on Monday (January 6) to help lead the Memphis Grizzlies to a win over the Dallas Mavericks at FedExForum to snap a two-game skid.

The 39th pick struggled to shoot from the field, knocking down just three of his 11 shot attempts. But Wells remained active on both ends of the court and found success penetrating into the paint to draw contact and get to the free-throw line..."

Courtney Anderson Jr. redshirted last season at Colorado after graduating from Dublin High. This season, he has played just 15 minutes in the first 13 games and I don't believe he is currently injured. The Buffaloes also have at least two incoming prep backcourt recruits but only the Andersons know where Courtney Jr. will be playing next season if that decision has even been made.

UC Davis 63, Cal State Fullerton 53 box. For the winners, sophomore guard Connor (Dougherty Valley High) Sevilla scored a team best 18 points and also pulled down five rebounds in the homecourt success.

Pacific 95, Washington State 94 OT box. Put this one into the Upset of the Season category. The young man is a darkhorse candidate for mayor of Stockton.

Santa Clara 82, Oregon State 81 OT box. For the Broncos, Elijah (West Valley College) Mahi led with both 21 points as well as five assists and added six boards to his mix.

San Francisco 81, Portland 72 box. With four starters scoring in double figures and shooting 50% overall and 39% as a team. USF won both 20 minute sessions and went to 4-1 in conference, 14-4 overall.

Idaho 80, Sacramento State 67 box. Jacob Holt enjoyed a 35 point, 10 rebound double-double but support from his teammates, but one, fell short as Idaho grabbed a solid road victory. News Bits

InsanenessMedia: "Congratulations to Coach Holloway on another career milestone. With the Vanden High 37-74 victory last night over Pioneer, Coach Holloway secured his 300th win as Vanden Basketball Head Coach."

Yes, the number of wins are impressive until you consider the number of young men Coach Micheal Holloway has positively influenced during his tenure. Keep both happening.

Elias "Swish" Gish: "After a great conversation with Coach Hurwitz, I’m blessed to receive a D1 offer from UCRiversideMBB. Thank you to the coaching staff for believing in me."

What's in the water supply for North Clovis? Here is yet another prospect, a 6-foot-6 '26 combo guard, coming out of Clovis North High.

..................................

Monterey Trail Hoops: "What a comeback! After falling behind 16-0, Trail storms back to defeat Folsom 71-67 in an absolute thriller! Rashawn Inglemon with 30 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and Devaughn Dorrough 14 points, 14 rebounds and Baron Roseborough 12 points (4-6 3P)."

..................................

Trey Knight: "Averaged 17.6 PPG in 3 games this past weekend at the North Idaho College Tournament! 11-1 overall record."

Knight's putting in the work and making progress at Tacoma Community College.

Gleaned from a recent The Kat's Paw/Bubbles Hawkins: "...San Francisco (for example) currently has a NIL budget five times the size of Pacific’s. 6’6” Ty Virgil, a Pacific legacy recruit, will attend Pepperdine next season ostensibly because the Waves NIL deal is worth $150K, roughly double what the Tigers can currently offer..."

Love to see information on NIL figures for teams and for signed prospects. We as fans usually have no idea regarding specific offers. The NIL war chest for team can generally be guessed.

Simply Basketball: "Loukas Jones is an absolute flamethrower! One of the best shooters on the west is a threat once he steps on the court!"

The Clovis North High senior displays excellent form, a quick release and the needed range to force defenses to come out on him but he's 6-foot-2 and will likely have to match up with usually speedy points on the teams of opponents in college. His foot speed looks middlin' at best.

Modesto Christian Basketball: "Congratulations to Myles Jones (Stanford commit) for being named Most Value Player of the 2024 Holiday Hoop Classic."

The Cardinal will be getting a good one at the point. He's a 2026 prospect who committed to the Stanford in mid-September 2024.

Tameka Emerson: "I'm so proud of this young man!! IYKYK The feeling i got when being told Takai earned a 4.0 gpa. This earned him a spot on the fall Dean's list. Takai also earned a spot to go to the "Black Student Athlete Summit". Keep working Kai!!🏀📚. This is what it's all about."

It's always great to hear about any basketball talent who also slam dunks it academically. It's actually amazing considering how much time and energy Takai (Vanden High) Hardy-Emerson's basketball commitment requires.

Eric Cabrera: "Kannon Rector (2027) Placer HS 13-2, MVP Kendall Arnett tournament. One of the top point guards in the section!! No stats on Max Preps but having a HUGE year!!!"

The six-footer is heady smart. Reads defenses well with the ball in his hands and even minus the ball in his hands, a situation which is sometimes rectified by his steals. Let's see how much more he can develop as his size will be a recruitment detriment..

In 12 game/starts and 33 minutes an outing, Noah (Pleasant Valley High/Chabot College) Thomas is averaging 9.0 points on 42%, 35% and 52% shooting respectively plus 2.8 rebounds, 24 assists versus 24 turnovers and a tied-for-team-high 18 steals at Arkansas-Monticello.

"Richard Pitino, UNM sued over alleged hazing altercation"

Not too long ago, it was a lawsuit of a sexual nature and hazing against New Mexico State.

What is it about D1 college hoops in New Mexico?
