"Good things come in small packages" is an appropriate saying here. But in the case of freshman Sid Duplessis of Sacramento City College and Monterey Trail High, he's a human being and basketball player and, well, possibly a compact package, at least relative to basketball.
But he plays big, fierce too, and that's what is most important. At 5-foot-11 and 150 pounds, he is averaging a team high 21.5 points, plus 5.3 assists and 5.0 rebounds a contest, alongside 34 steals for Coach Andrew Jones.
Asked about his best hoops skills, he answered, "it's the way I get open and score. I shoot real good, mid-range and from distance, and my quickness is better than most of my opponents."
As for leadership, Duplessis isn't a captain (the team has two) but being a newcomer in his initial year limits his leadership opportunities. However, he is the sole freshman on the team receiving major playing minutes.
His best hoops moment came this season in the finals of the Mendocino tournament against Los Medanos College. "I scored 30 points and earned the Most Valuable Player honor." Duplessis shot 9-16 overall, 4-6 from three-point range and 8-8 at the foul line in addition to grabbing seven boards in the 79-78 victory. He averaged 27.3 points per game in the tourney.
Like Father, Like Son
He credits his father for his hoops prowess. "My Dad has always been there for me and we worked out. He still plays. It was something I really wanted to do. He also went to Sac City and played for Coach Jones." The elder Duplessis averaged 19.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.1 steals as a sophomore in the 1999-00 season. He is currently the head coach at Sacramento High.
As for any NBA talents he likes to watch, Duplessis offered, "LeBron James, Ja Morant and some of the smaller guards like Steph Curry."
So maybe "Don't judge a book by its cover"? Yes, Sid's not a book...
