News Bits

Here you go with the late Bill Walton's best and funniest television moments. What a player and what a character as the ultimate color announcer.

..................................

On a much more somber and actually hard to believe note:

Marc J Spears: "Former NBA forward Drew Gordon, the brother of Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon, died in a car accident in Portland, Ore., today, his agent Calvin Andrews confirmed to ESPN Andscape. The San Jose native who played at UCLA and New Mexico was 33 years old."

I believed he was indestructible.

..................................

Cal Poly Men's Basketball:"An NABC Division II All-America selection at Colorado Mesa, Cal Poly is pleased to welcome 6-7 forward Ethan Menzies to the lineup!"

Menzies is out of Half Moon Bay High and is rejoining his former Colorado Mesa coach who has taken over at Cal Poly.

The feature article.

..................................

Shams Charania: "Illinois’ Coleman (Prolific Prep) Hawkins is withdrawing from the 2024 NBA Draft and will transfer to a new program, the forward tells TheAthletic. Hawkins is expected to be among the highest-paid NIL college basketball players and is using final year of eligibility for development."

Would love to see him at Cal for his final season but that doesn't appear to be what will happen.

..................................

"Jaylen Wells staying in draft and 'looking forward to representing' Cougs in the NBA"

What a story! Credit Sonoma State Head Coach Rich Shayewitz for seeing and landing Wells' potential first. Then Kyle Smith who didn't get stuck in the mud because Wells was playing at the D2 level.

Here's our early May 2023 Wells feature.

..................................

John Bynum Jr.: "Dajon “Money” Lott (Sacramento CC) has committed to Western Washington University. Lott averaged 21.0 points, 10.9 rebounds and 3.0 blocks last season for the Panthers."

Congrats to Lott. But like with West Valley College's 6-foot-11 Shakir Odunewu who has committed to Bakersfield, why are the best of California's community players seemingly landing below their 'expected' level of signing school? Sac State can't use Lott?

..................................

John Bynum Jr.: "Chris Holley (Santa Rosa JC) has committed to Sonoma State University. Holley averaged 16.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists last season for the Bearcubs."

Solid get by SSU.

..................................

"Arizona and 2024 shooting guard Jamari Phillips part ways"

He was recruited over after a subpar senior campaign. Now it will be fascinating to see who lines up to land him now?

..................................

Team Lillard Basketball: "Alvin Loving (2025) has received an offer from University of Montana."

The 6-foot-4 Salesian Prep sharpshooter also has a Yale offer.

..................................

24/7 High School Hoops: "NEWS: 2025 4⭐️ Jovani Ruff tells LeagueRDY he’s down to four schools:

  • Kansas
  • USC
  • Oregon
  • California

Ruff is a skilled three-level scorer with a smooth offensive game. Has a very good overall feel for the game and is a good playmaker with the ball in his hands. #27 in the ESPN100."

..................................

Jonathan Givony: "NEWS: USF's Jonathan Mogbo will keep his name in the 2024 NBA Draft, his agent Austin Walton told ESPN. Mogbo had a strong Combine showing that elevated his standing with NBA teams. He's currently the No. 42 ranked prospect in the ESPN Top-100."

..................................

Jasir Rencher: "Blessed to receive an offer from West Virginia University!!"

Yes it is an achievement but he's not heading to Morgantown. Proud of his Oakland birthplace, no, not happening.

..................................

Verbal Commits: "California, Long Beach State and UC Riverside offered 2025 Modesto Christian (CA) G Gavin Sykes."

..................................

5-foot-6 Atwater High guard Khoi Nguyen has decided to attend UC Merced and play for Coach Kevin Pham.

..................................

5-foot-8 Venture (Stockton) Academy point Jacob Segura is joining forces with the Napa Valley Storm.

..................................

League Him: "Hugo Facorat, 17 this week, showcases a promising blend of skill and tools at 6'10. The talented French prospect tells us he's interested in taking the college route and has received early interest from Marquette, Ohio St, Santa Clara, Seton Hall, and St. John’s, among others."

..................................

Lorenzo Pardo: "Excited to further my education and athletics career at Pacific Union College! Thank you for the coaches that have recruited me and believed in me throughout this process. Thank you to DVC Mens Hoops for the past 2 years to help me grow as a player and a person. All good to God."

He's a 5-foot-11 point from Diablo Valley College and Heritage High.
