"De La Salle and Branson get key wins at NorCal Tip-Off Classic"

"NorCal Tip-Off Classic Recaps"

--------------------

Verbal Commits: "2024 Eastern Arizona College (AZ) C Anton Bonke has received an offer from San José State. Qualifier w/three years to play."

Spartan Coach Tim Miles prefer junior college transfers to have three years of eligibility remaining.

Bonke also has offers from Providence, Northern Arizona, Tarleton State, Southern Utah, Southern Mississippi, Troy, BYU and Kansas City.  This site has him at 7-foot and 340 pounds but viewing his video makes it clear that such is an error. He may not even be 240. His unusual background includes time as an Olympic rower. His Eastern Arizona coach is a Mormon which may make the young man a near lock for BYU.

Video on him shows a prospect with good hands, strength, mobility and shotblocking ability. He's mostly dunking in his video so his shooting range is unknown as is his rebounding prowess.

The Spartan starting center picked up five fouls in four minutes against North Dakota State the other night. Yes, you read that right. A guy like Bonke is needed.

Tyjean (Antelope High/College of the Sequoias) Burrell is named Player of the Week for San Francisco State.

Jonathan Givony: "Keshad (San Leandro High) Johnson has been a game-changer for Arizona, locking up the paint, sliding his feet on switches, closing out on shooters and bringing nonstop effort and physicality, helping his draft stock significantly in the process."

Givony is a well-thought-of NBA draft analyst.

"Robert Vaihola is “likely out for this season.” Here’s how SJSU MBB could adapt."

There's no one else on the Spartan roster like him.

* CHANGE IN COVERAGE:
My policy thus far has been to provide scores and box scores (when available) on Nor Cal teams who have a Nor Cal player or players with above average game statistics in that game. Hence, Santa Clara with but one Nor Cal signee (a walk-on who rarely plays) and Sacramento State with just two Nor Cal talents who play on its roster and Pacific with zero Nor Cal players have been shortchanged in my coverage. From now on, I'll provide a game score and a box score for each Nor Cal D1 team regardless of how prolific their Nor Cal players are in that game. I'll also try to do so on lower level teams and their games.

Joaquin Aguillon Commits to Macalester

Joaquin Aguillon is a member of The Branson School's vaunted backcourt, a group that will carry the Bulls to success this season. It will be a continuation as Branson finished 28-4 last season, 15-1 in the Marin County League.

Aguillon's play caught the attention of the coaching staff at Macalester College, based in St. Paul, Minnesota. He visited the school in late September and eventually committed in November.

Why so? "My visit was amazing, hitting all the right spots," Aguillon said. "It was super good."

Aguillon on his Macalester official visit

So what will he be bringing to his new team? "Definitely an all-around player with a high IQ. I played four years on varsity and I can shoot, defend and run the offense."

Branson Head Coach Demetrius Roquemore offered "Joaquin possesses a versatile skill set that significantly contributes to The Branson School's success. His standout skills include a keen basketball IQ, a reliable scoring ability and athleticism making him a dynamic player on both ends of the court."

How did he develop his hoops acumen? "By playing pickup with different types of players. I started when I was seven years old as me and my Dad would go play pickup. Basketball was my first sport. It came natural to me and I was good at it."

Aguillon cited his father as a prominent influence in his rise in basketball. He also noted watching the unselfish play of the Golden State Warriors as well as "all my coaches in AAU and high school. I picked up stuff from all of them. I love watching basketball and playing it is even more fun."

He thanked my Dad, my Mom, my brother and my grandmother for aiding him in his basketball journey. "My grandmother is always the loudest person in the stands. I can hear her when I'm playing.

Academically, he sports a 3.63 grade point average even with Branson being a high academic school. "I'm good with time management, taking care of my school work so that I can play basketball."

Regarding leadership, "Yes, I'm definitely a leader. As a freshman, I was on the other side and I have learned our system plus how to talk to my teammates and give them words of encouragement." On this subject, Roquemore contributed "without a doubt, Joaquin is a natural leader on and off the court. His leadership manifests itself through his strong work ethic, vocal presence, and the way he consistently sets a positive example for his teammates. Whether it's during practices, games, or in the locker room, Joaquin's leadership is instrumental in fostering a cohesive and determined team environment."

Having experienced three coaches (Jonas Honick, Stevie Johnson and now Demetrius Roquemore) in his four years, the culture of the team has carried over despite the employment of some differences in styles and tactics.

Asked to recall his best basketball moment, Aguillon offered "winning the MCAL championship because we had lost the year before." Additionally, "in the NCS championship game, I returned from missing games due to an ankle injury and it was my first game back. I scored the first 11 points (including three threes)."

He sees himself as a combo guard at the next level because "I can shoot, run the offense and I'm a versatile defender." Roquemore added "Joaquin demonstrates the qualities of a versatile player, capable of handling the ball and orchestrating plays as a point guard while also showcasing scoring prowess that aligns with the shooting guard position. His ability to seamlessly transition between these roles makes him a valuable combo guard for Branson."

Roquemore also noted "Joaquin has not only met but exceeded my expectations. His continuous growth, dedication to improvement, and ability to elevate his performance in crucial moments have surpassed initial expectations. Joaquin's commitment to excellence has undoubtedly had a positive impact on our team's overall success."

Now the Macalester challenge awaits.

Trey Neff Heading to the Cornhusker State

Playing his basketball way up in northern California, 6-foot-3, 170 College of the Redwoods sophomore guard Trey Neff may have missed out on some recruiting radars but he's busy controlling what he can, that being his effort, effectiveness, production on the court and "doing what's best for the team."

The returning Golden Valley Conference Most Valuable and all state honoree currently averages 20.0 points per game on 42% shooting from three-point range early in the new season. He's at 47% overall shooting, 88% at the foul line while averaging 4.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists a contest. Neff is coming off a remarkable freshman season in which he averaged 20.6 points, shooting 47%, 45% and 85% overall, alongside 111 assists and 64 steals.

His play, and that of his twin brother and sophomore Redwoods teammate Ty, caught the eye of the Chadron State coaching staff. Full ride offers were extended, recently accepted and both Neffs will be heading to Nebraska next season. Chadron State is a member of the D2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Asked what he does best, Neff offered "shooting at a high rate from anywhere on the court but especially at three-point range." He also noted "my basketball IQ" which he attributed to "playing for a long time and really learning the game." Likely to play as a two guard at the next level, he believes he also has the possibility of being positioned periodically at the point if his next college coaches wishes to deploy him as such.

Neff explained "I didn't receive a lot of interest coming out of high school (in Medford, OR), mainly some D3 schools in Oregon. I felt College of the Redwoods and Coach Ryan Bisio were the best fit to help me improve my game." As for a next stop after this season, "I'll go anywhere."

Regarding leadership, Neff explained "I typically lead through example but I'm a second-year guy and I need to get out of my shell."

He sports a 3.9 grade point average (all As except for one) and is looking to major in business but isn't sure what direction on that spectrum to dive into after earning his four-year degree.

Topping Neff's accolades are these lavish words of praise from his coach Ryan Bisio: "Trey is a basketball savant. He is a professional junior college player, in terms of his polish and IQ. His instincts and calculations are always a step or two ahead. He was born to play basketball and coaching him has been one of the luckiest occurrences in my career. They simply are not made like Trey Neff very often – and he’s one of my favorite people and players on the planet."

Keeping It In The Family

Besides crediting his parents for "getting us into sports at a young age," Neff also acknowledged his brother Ty as his biggest basketball influence. "We push each other and he makes me compete." Both participated in all sports but hoops won out. "I liked the fast pace and that one second you're playing defense and the next you're shooting a three," Neff said.

His best basketball moment occurred "in our playoff game against Cosumnes River College at home last season. The atmosphere is our home gym was electric and it was fun to be part of. We were down in the second half in round two of the playoffs but we won 77-66." Neff provided 14 points, six rebounds and six assists in the victory.

He is a fan of Lamelo Ball, a heralded point who became the third pick in the 2020 draft and now plays for Charlotte. "I take things from him."

Coming off 26-4 overall, 9-1 in the Golden Valley Conference records, Redwoods lost 58-49 in the NorCal Regional Final to College of the Sequoias. Neff and Company are looking to put together another strong season before he and his brother move on to four-year ball in the Midwest.

Potpourri, Nov 10

6-foot-6 sophomore Elijah Mahi has returned to play for West Valley College.  In July, he announced a commitment to play at Santa Clara but something obviously went awry. Maybe he never signed and the situation never moved beyond a commitment but that's not was written in several accounts.

"Elijah Mahi spent last season at West Valley (Junior) College, where he went to improve his academic standing after failing to get a Division 1 scholarship out of high school. That move was a success as Mahi averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists on 51-40-65 shooting splits before being Canada’s top scorer on the U23 GLOBL JAM team this summer. It was enough to earn him a scholarship to Santa Clara but, due to unknown reasons, he is back for a second year at West Valley."

This July West Valley College athletics article has him accepting a Santa Clara scholarship.

Having Mahi back is a big boost for West Valley Coach Danny Yoshikawa as Mahi was "selected to the 2022-23 CCCAA All-State Team and was the Coast Freshman of the Year, the Coast-South Defensive Player of the Year, and a member of the All-Coast 1st Team and the All-Coast Freshman Team. He topped the Vikings with 17.5 points per game on 50.8% shooting, along with 6.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1 steal per contest."

The new center Adrame Diongue has promise but needs weight and muscle in order to have any sort of an offensive game. Like with tonight and the other night against UC Irvine, the Spartans will likely have a different top scorer from game to game. It was good to see Myron Amey healthy after back-to-back ankle surgeries. 6-foot-9 Tibet Gorener's shooting % never came around last season but tonight he looked like one guy who can work for his own shot. Promising freshman guard Latrell Davis garnered a high number of free throws, a definite need for SJSU in the backcourt. Liked Marc Spears doing color commentary.
