A San Jose State University player who is being largely overlooked during the pre-season because of multiple ankle injuries that kept him out of view/sidelined for most of last season, is 6-foot-2 Myron (Vacaville High) Amey Jr.
The junior scoring guard (who may be able to get a season of eligibility back after his senior year) possesses the potential to replicate a solid portion of former Spartan Omari Moore's point production. Do keep in mind that Amey also spent a prep season back east in Pennsylvania after graduating from Vacaville High so he is older and more experienced than most of the other current SJSU backcourters.
Amey Jr. just missed averaging in double figures in his freshman season at 9.4 points per game, while shooting 44%, 38% and 73% respectively. Last season, he played in just nine games at 13.1 minutes per outing
In this season's edition of The Almanac, Spartan Coach Tim Miles envisions Amey Jr. as a go-to-guy overall and when the shot clock is running down. "[Amey Jr.] is a bona fide, excellent scorer in the Mountain West. If we can get him on the floor, he will score.”
The latter is obviously the critical component.
Another note: 6-foot-1 Bennett Blackerby, a solid shooter out of Austin, TX has also been announced as a member of the SJSU roster for this season. He earned First Team, All District honors after last season. Plus, Blackerby also played football as a wide receiver some in high school.
Posted earlier: "Also in this past season but in the high school ranks, 6-foot-6 Archbishop Riordan frontcourter Christian Wise (#22) earned Second Team All-WCAL honors. After reviewing his options, he cast his lot as a walk-on in the 2023-24 season with the Spartans.
Wise has decided to walk-on at SJSU as a power forward in his initial college season. He may be looking at transitioning to a three if his ball skills expand.
We talked recently with Curtin in inquiring about what Spartan fans will be seeing in Wise and here is what he said. "It's hard for high school seniors to get scholarships. You are competing with the world and first there was COVID, now there's the transfer portal." Wise transferred to Riordan as a junior from Heritage High in Brentwood. Curtin also mentioned that Wise started late in basketball due to participating earlier in baseball.
According to Curtin, Wise received D2 and NAIA offers this year but "he wants to play D1 basketball. So his possible path will be longer."
Asked about Wise's strengths, Curtin offered, "he's amazing vertically, finishing above the rim with his jumping ability and power. He's a shotblocker with tremendous fluidity as an athlete and a one of a kind dunker, the best I ever coached. Christian has been working this summer on his ball skills and jump shot."
