Meet Matt McAndrews

A golden oldie from 2017—still a worthwhile read - KM.

When a love for the game of basketball is demonstrably palpable, rather than just solely verbalized, it's an exhilarating and contagious experience. Watch 6-foot-1 Foothill College guard Matt McAndrews for just a few minutes, whether it be in an actual game or practice or even in a pick-up setting and his fervor is ever present. Heck, just talk with him for a while and it's apparent his hoops spirit comes straight from the heart.

However important that is to being successful, there is so much more to McAndrews.

He comes from a very successful program at Archbishop Mitty, one that went 86-14 during his varsity tenure. The Monarchs won a state championship in 2012, lost to Mater Dei in the title match the following season and then fell to Capital Christian in the state semifinals. "I didn't have to score a lot because we had so many options and so many scorers," McAndrews recalled.

He then moved over to Foothill College. "While I was at Mitty, I was kind of small," he explained. "College ball is physical so I didn't play first year (at Foothill)."

In his second year as an Owl, McAndrews was all set to go. "I got my weight up and was playing in the San Francisco Pro-Am. But right after our summer tournament, I was playing in a park, went up to dunk and got undercut. I landed on my neck and fractured it."

"Being sidelined for me was really, really difficult. I had never been injured and here I was in bed for two or three weeks. It was a big blow mentally and I was depressed."

There Was an Upside

"I learned I really love basketball -- this is what I want to do. But I also learned there's a lot more to life than basketball. I use it as a tool to be successful in the future. I've met so many people because of basketball, whether it be at Foothill or the Pro Am and adult leagues and I love it."

He returned to the court this season for Foothill and quickly put up eye-catching numbers: 18.1 points on 49%, 43% and 80% shooting, 3.4 assists plus 3.1 rebounds in his first seven games. However, he was slowed by two hernias and two tears in his lower abductors and decided to get those ailments resolved. He earned a medical redshirt and still retains four years of eligibility.

"I'm just happy to be playing still. I'm still in the gym everyday and it's the most fun I've had. I've been playing since I was seven or eight and I'm 21 now and finally realizing my potential."

The Genesis of His Enthusiasm

"My Dad hardest worker I've ever seen. He's the guy who got me into basketball and a reason I still play. He helped in me learning about the game and seeing him work in his craft makes me work on mine. He knows what to do to be successful and I'll end up being successful if I use the same formula."

There's also this: "Part of it comes from my coaches over the years. [Foothill Head Coach] Matt Stanley, [Foothill Associate Head Coach] Jimmy Herrera. [Archbishop Mitty Head Coach] Tim Kennedy, my AAU coaches, they each put 100% into their teams. I am the same way with the same mindset. Their dedication makes me want to get better and they have pushed me towards thinking I want to be a coach in the future. [During a game], I'll look over at Stanley and see we're on the same page, thinking the same thing. Our mind's kind of click. The confidence in me has pushed me to thinking about coaching."

McAndrews' Mission

"My job as a point guard is that I don't want them to coach as much as they do. I want to be their coach on the floor. Give me the keys to the car."

One element that aided McAndrews' leadership role this season is the tightness of the Owl squad. "Our team this year was one of the closest ever, 1-15 just really good guys. It's like a family with 15 best friends. We knew how to talk to each other and knew everyone's playing style. I went around meeting the guys on the team and my job was to make it easier, to help them play into their game. I want to be the type of player giving out shots."

"I would watch the high school tapes [of my teammates] and their playing styles. I learned what they did as seniors. The old tapes showed what they were and could be. I saw my job as raising their confidence like when they were back in high school and get them to play like that at Foothill."

About his basketball IQ, McAndrews offered, "It's a lot easier to develop when you're fully invested and around the same thing 24/7 continuously getting new information. I started watching a lot more film of my game and others because I'm always trying to learn new things, Nothing is forced for me, it's all natural and I love it. I also like math so it's fun for an hour and a half when I walk into math class."

However, there is one prominent line of demarcation separating him from his teammates and it runs through Cleveland. While citing Jason Williams and Steve Nash as inspirations, McAndrews is a huge LBJ fan. "My teammates hate me because I talk about him (LeBron James) all the time. I study his game and he's made me see the game slower. He plays basketball like it should be played and is the best ever at impacting the game without scoring."

Donovan Cooks Staying in the Bay

6-foot-1 Donovan Cooks of Dublin High wins in the classroom (a 3.67 grade point average) and is successful on the court (18-12 this season, 7-2 in the East Bay Athletic League. Now he's taking these elements to San Francisco State University and Coach Vince Inglima.

Cooks offered a trio of reasons for his decision to go with the Gators. "I developed a bond with the coaches, it was the right fit for me and I was their #1 option."

He traveled from the East Bay to the San Francisco State University campus located in the southwest part of San Francisco on an official visit in March, touring the campus and meeting the team. His decision came "a little afterwards when I got together with my family and decided."

Cooks' Strengths

As Dublin High Coach Tom Costello wrote about his team leader in a January tweet: "Worker. Leader. Winner! This kid just puts his head down and works! Does whatever it takes in weight room, in the classroom, in the locker room, and on the hard wood..."

Performing self analysis on his skills set, Cooks offered the following as his best skills: "I'm a very good shooter and I make my teammates better with my passing by getting them involved. I like to watch film and I can actually see plays before they actually take place."

Additionally, "my leadership, for sure. I do that both by being vocal and by example. Every team needs leaders and I grew into it."

Regarding his influences, Cooks cited "my Dad was my first coach and he introduced me to the game and showed me how to play. Guard Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns is another and Tom Costello, my Dublin coach. I've been going to his camps for years and we've developed a much deeper relationship than just over the game of basketball."

Most Memorable Moments

He noted two best moments in hoops, one from early on and the other a more broader component. "My first game-winning shot came in third grade. It was a rush of excitement and I also got an ice cream on the way home as a reward." The other being "all the bonds I've created from playing basketball."

Cook participated in just about every sport while growing up but "baseball was a bit slow and my Mom didn't like me getting hit in football." Thus, basketball came to the fore.

He knew in eighth grade that a college basketball scholarship would be forthcoming because "I was playing well against top teams and players at the time."

Three individuals in particular received Cooks' thanks for their assistance during his journey. "Definitely my Dad and my Mom -- my Mom sacrificed so much for me and she is the rock of our family." Also, "Stevie Johnson who has been my trainer since eighth grade."

Cooks will major in business management at San Francisco State University.

Their players are disciplined and I feel they have a really good tradition of winning games and having the right development for their guards. They have had Patty Mills and Matthew Delevedova who have made it to the NBA. Randy Bennett is a really cool dude. I have maintained a great relationship with him and the other coaches on the staff. I want to know how they operate and what it is like over there...”

Aidan Burke Returning to California

Aidan Burke is young in years but already mature and wise in his decision-making. In choosing a college to attend, he heavily weighed the academic strengths of his final two options, more so than even their athletic affiliations—the focus being on which school ultimately would be the best springboard into the world of work, not necessarily which possessed the highest level of basketball. Granted, that wasn't the sole component of Burke's attention but the foremost element. "Having a longer vision has always been the plan," he explained.

Burke chose UC San Diego over Swarthmore (PA). The former was established in 1960 and is considered one of the United States' public Ivies. The Tritons play in the D1 Big West Conference, finishing their transition up in 2024.

Swarthmore is known as one of the Little Ivies. Founded in 1864, U.S.News and World Report ranks it as the third best liberal arts college in the nation. Lately, the basketball team has been in the running for several national championships.

Another Tough Decision

But Burke faced yet another critical decision coming out of Archbishop Mitty as a much-heralded hoops talent—should he head to college or play a season at a prep school? His honors while at Archbishop Mitty included West Catholic Athletic League 2022 Player of the Year, 2022 San Francisco Chronicle Peninsula Player of the Year, 3rd Team All-State, 1st Team All-State D-II plus four WCAL titles during his tenure. But the COVID pandemic reduced recruiting options and Burke chose to attend academically prestigious Phillips Exeter in New Hampshire, which offers a startling 5-1 student-to-instructor ratio. "My (prep school) decision reflected the large role I wanted academics to play," Burke explained.

How did that work out? "I wanted to get bigger and stronger plus Phillips Exeter allowed me to spend time in a new place and develop a more worldly view. Plus, living on campus provided the opportunity to focus on basketball." It wasn't like high school where driving back and forth between home and school eats up valuable time. Another attractive element being the year before Burke arrived, the Phillips Exeter basketball program enjoyed four players moving on to D1 scholarships.

Burke's Strengths

Asked what he will bring to the Triton program, Burke offered, "I take pride in my shooting and my defense." He is particularly proud of the disruptions he creates on the court with pass deflections. "It was stressed how important that was back in middle school. My overall defense got me on the court at Mitty during my sophomore year."

Burke sees himself as a leader on the court. "I definitely play a leadership role. I'm positive on the court and also lead by example. You have to talk with your teammates to figure out what works."

His best basketball moments? "Definitely, the rivalry games at Mitty with Bellarmine and Riordan, and winning the championships."

Four of his coaches in particular stand out for Burke. "When I was in fifth grade, Ruben Luna and my parents talked and I began working out with him. I still work out with him when I get back home. He has so much knowledge about footwork and the little details."

"I was the youngest guy on Mitty Coach Tim Kennedy's team and it was critical for me to see what it takes to succeed. I worked my way up and started as a junior."

"Ruben asked Justin Joyner if I could come in and start practicing with Justin's AAU team and, with Justin, my defense really picked up."

"David (D-Mo) Moore was my first ever AAU coach and I played three years for him. He now does very detailed skill development with players."

Burke participated in multiple sports growing up -- football, soccer, baseball and basketball. His mother wasn't keen on his being on the gridiron and "it never resonated" with him anyway. Ultimately, the choice came down to basketball and baseball and the latter was "too slow-paced."

"I'd like to thank my parents and my three younger siblings. My parents have supported me a lot through the process as well as guided me to balance both academic and athletics when looking into different schools and helping me come to my decision."

Burke will be majoring in Economics.

Connor Sevilla Isn't Going Far (Away)

Sevilla's Mentality

6-foot Connor Sevilla possesses absolute certainty about his decision—his conviction to go with Coach Jim Les and UC Davis as his college selection is rock solid. So the Dougherty Valley High guard is now sleeping soundly. "I'm really confident with my choice of UC Davis, no doubts about it," he explained. "It's close to home, they play high level basketball and the coaching staff was transparent throughout the process."

Sevilla sums up the recruiting process as "the opportunity to choose is a blessing but not knowing (who will offer or when) is stressful all along."

But he is taking nothing for granted. "Nothing is guaranteed. I'll work my butt off to earn playing time."

Sevilla officially visited UC Davis on April 19. "We toured the campus, watched the guards work out and talked with the coaches.”

When asked what he will bring to the Aggies squad, Sevilla said, "the intangibles of being a natural leader, alongside a winning mentality and relentless work ethic. I've always had the ability to shoot the ball but now I'm more mature and can handle the ball better. I use my speed and explosiveness to create my own shot coming off screens and in attacking defenses."

Family Background

Coming from a hoops family (brothers Donovan is a junior at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts and sophomore Aidan is in the transfer portal after playing at Regis University in Denver) played a role in his immersion into basketball. "Playing with my brothers, I developed a love for the game as I found out how much fun it is."

"Because of my experience with my brothers, I knew I wanted to be a college basketball player when I was in middle school," he recalled. "In workouts and trainings, it's fun to see how we match up. They'll return home this summer and we'll see how we match up now (as compared to last summer)."

Sevilla counts being coached by Mike Hansen at Dougherty Valley High as a bonus. "Coach Hansen not only coached me but also my brothers and embodies a coach who is all about his players."

He expressed gratitude to "my parents, my brothers, my family, my friends, Coach Hansen and my teammates, who have all been extremely supportive. Joell Crawford at Infinite Training looked out for me even before I joined his program, and trainers Stevie Johnson in San Ramon and Sacramento's Trev Abraham who have each played a big role in my development."

Arriving at Davis in early August, "I'll do summer school and work out with the team."

Sevilla will major in business with no specific focus as yet.

The Broncos may have another first-rounder:

"Brandin Podziemski, Santa Clara

Podziemski’s measurements were somewhat underwhelming, but his stat-sheet-stuffing performance Wednesday is another example of why he deserves first-round consideration. He played his role as a secondary creator admirably, dishing out seven assists and battling well on the glass in addition to his 10 points. He’s a smart player, a strong outside shooter and has more pop athletically than he has been given credit for, as evidenced by his 39-inch vertical jump. Santa Clara produced one of the NBA’s best rookies in Jalen Williams a year ago, and a second first-rounder in as many years isn’t out of the question thanks to Podziemski’s positive showing."

Austin Ito Is a Menlo Guy

When a basketball talent is told by a head coach that "You're our kind of guy" and "you fit our program," it's hard to resist such feel good phrases. The appeal reaches both the head and heart. These and other positives were enough for 6-2 Woodcreek High and Rose City Basketball guard Austin Ito and he recently committed to Menlo College Coach Brendan Rooney.

His primary reasons for heading to the Oaks? "Definitely Coach Rooney, he has a great program going on there. Plus, I know Kaito" (Williams, a 6-foot-1 Menlo guard out of Sheldon High who is also from the Sacramento area.) On his visit, "the guys greeted me and we hung out in the dorms. It's family there. I heard from the coaches just after the high school season and tripped in January."

"I was super excited about my decision when I told my parents," he recalled. But "it was also a big relief and a weight off my shoulders," starkly illustrating the ying-and-yang of college recruiting for players.

Brandon White, head of Ito's Rose City Ballers AAU team, said, "I'm very proud of Austin, he's a special kid. His best basketball is in front of him and I look forward to watching him play next year."

Bringing to Menlo

What Ito will take to the Oaks program includes "definitely the ability to shoot and facilitating." Plus "I bring people together into a close family and I push teammates well, always in a positive way. I promote turning the page so that we can learn and have a better team."

Ito sports a 3.8 grade point average but acknowledges the work involved in that achievement. It involved "staying up late at night studying, early morning studying, with little to no sleep and staying in touch with my teachers to see how I'm doing." Also, "time management and setting priorities."

Besides that achievement, Ito earned Sacramento Bee All Metro honors while averaging 18.7 points per game. He went over 1,000 career points during his senior season.

Looking to major in business at Menlo, Ito explained the attraction. "I took a three-course class from Mr. Hayes, our former basketball coach, and I enjoyed the assignments, doing projects and slideshows. I prefer the marketing aspect and want to run a marketing agency."

now and then, "I'm planning on getting stronger and putting on weight." The the Menlo strength coach is already sending him workout material. "I'm also working on my next level moves with Rashid Cann, my trainer (Shine Athletics Player Development and Consulting) with a strong emphasis on ball screen action.

Ito leaves for Menlo on August 17, the beginning of a three-day orientation.

The Chabot Gladiators Basketball Win Streak

Minus a trio of players who lost their eligibility during the holidays due to academics, an up-and-down 2022-23 Chabot College basketball team and Coach Keenan McMiller faced the second half of its schedule with a reduction in firepower and depth. Yet the remaining squad then blazed a 14-game winning streak starting on January 9 that markedly turned their season around.

Label the 2022-23 Chabot season initially hot due to a 4-0 season start, then inconsistent and cold because of a three-game losing streak, including a pair of two point losses. A win, another loss, then a victory came next. However, a trio of losses followed. Granted, many of these were close contests. Even in the January 6 Chabot - CCSF contest, a 101-81 loss to the Rams, McMiller found positives, offering "we played four guys recovering from the flu and another suffering from hives and we still won the second half by three points."

Close Contests

The tight games for the Gladiators covered the spectrum:

  • November included a 58-55 loss to Merritt plus a 92-90 loss to host MPC,
  • December brought a 92-90 defeat at the hands of host San Jose City College and a 79-76 loss to Cuesta College in the Hancock tournament,
  • February being notable for an 89-87 victory over visiting #1 San Francisco City College.

The Gladiators concluded the regular season 20-8 overall, with a 13-1 Coast North Conference record.  Their 14 game winning streak is rife with a bevy of  high-scoring games: 82 points, 75 points, 88, 98, 104, 93, 89, 94, 90, 103 and 107 as Chabot closed out the regular season with an 84.1 points per game scoring average. Coach Keenan McMiller earned the honor of co-coach of the year in the Coast-North Conference as the first African American coach to do so. The Gladiators shared a league championship with CCSF.

In the playoffs, the Gladiators first faced Los Medanos College on February 25 and Jaiden Rivera's 33 points carried Chabot to an 89-82 home court victory. McMiller's crew earned the right to face host San Jose City College on March 4 but fell 82-68 on Saturday to the Jaguars in the NorCal Regional Final with Zach Broadous' 18 points leading the points production while Diggy Winbush and Jaiden Rivera contributed 15 points apiece.

The Prominent Gladiator Turnaround Factors

A team-bonding exercise promoted growth and maturity. "Utilizing the bonding exercise began when I was still at Merritt and took place this year mid-season on Avila Beach" (near San Luis Obispo) as the Gladiators were also preparing for participation in a basketball tournament. "It's a check-in to see how the guys are doing. Next season, we are going to do one early in the season and also keep the mid-season one. I call the biggest thing coming out of our bonding work as a come-to-Jesus moment. They learned so much about each other. What works for the team and you is your goals being their goals," McMiller explained.

Also while in San Luis Obispo, McMiller set up a dinner with his assistant coaches to have a "where are we at?" dinner. The question surrounding "why can't we win league?" was addressed by all. The January 20-point loss to CCSF hung heavy in the air but McMiller witnessed the aforementioned positives: four of his players taking the court still in the throes of the flu and one suffering an in-game hives attack which stopped play for 20 minutes or so. Also, that Chabot won the second half of the game by three points. "Our players weren't mentally tough enough and mature yet."

Call his communication processes promoting greater trust and chemistry.

McMiller also utilizes a post-season questionaire, a process allowing his student-athletes to provide formal annual feedback on what worked and what needs improvement. The relationships he built with his talents over the season shined through in the honest and direct responses as well as the thanks offered. "We do this every year."

As for next season, McMiller sees more success on the horizon. He loses five sophomores (6-foot-11 Terrence Craft earning a full scholarship to Bellevue University) but recruiting is going well due to a number of early commits.

Kyle Winters Returning to West Coast

6-foot-4 Kyle Winters reversed the Horace Greeley-credited exhortation "go west, young man" in seeking his basketball fortune and now the former Marin Catholic High star is headed to Siena College, a private Franciscan college located in New York.

Named the Marin Independent Journal Player of the Year two seasons ago, Winters decided to take a prep year and first enroll at New Hampton School located in New Hampshire. "On a tour, I learned I could come in and play right away, making an immediate impact. I was also impressed by the coaches."

The lifelong Marin-ite did have to adjust to the weather. "This winter was cold with snow and below zero temperatures but basketball is played inside," he cheerfully noted.

A Mutual Attraction

Across the state line but just 190 miles away, the Siena College basketball coaches took notice of Winters at New Hampton which finished 22-11 on the season

And why wouldn't they? As Winters self describes, "I'm able to shoot, both off the dribble and with the catch-and-shoot, I'm reliable mid-range to beyond the three-point line and I take pride at the defensive end." He calls himself a combo guard, able to contribute as a shooting guard and at the point.

Winters visited Siena "a few weeks ago," meeting the coaches and players and touring the campus. Afterwards, he accepted the offer to walk-on to the basketball team. "I felt welcomed and wanted," he explained. "Walk-ons are included in everything. My job will be to bring energy and play as hard as possible. Minutes will have to be earned." His hope is to earn a scholarship for his second season.

Leadership

A captain of his Marin Catholic squad, Winters also captained this season's New Hampton team, an honor voted on by the players. "I'm a leader, for sure by example, but I talk a lot on the court, especially on defense. I also perform every drill in practice full blast."

Winters thanked "my very supportive parents and all my coaches, trainers and teachers, including Marin Catholic Coach Mike Saia, my trainer Daryl Jones who helped with my body, and my brother Brendan Winters, who is currently an assistant at Dominican University."

He'll be back home soon for a month or so before heading to a Siena training camp in June.
