Quinn Denker Goes with Coach Alex Pribble & Idaho

Quinn Denker would have kept D2 Cal State San Marcos in consideration had Coach B.J. Foster chosen to remain in place and not move on to head the Southern Nazarene University (OK) basketball program. The versatile 6-foot-3 guard enjoyed both how he was utilized on the court and the team posting 20-11, 17-5 winning records. But the official announcement of Foster's move to the Sooner State on April 11 closed that door. Suddenly, getting recruited to a new school became front and center and Denker ultimately landed at the D1 University of Idaho, courtesy of new Vandal Coach Alex Pribble. He's quite the example of landing on your feet.

Denker's Fascinating Background

In high high school at Bellarmine College Prep, Denker received recruiting interest from then Seattle University Head Coach Jim Hayford. But college eligibility rules were altered in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, and the NCAA "granted players an additional year of eligibility," according to Denker. Pribble assisted Hayford at the time and out of that came a solid Denker-Pribble connection. When Hayford was let go during the 2021-22 season, Pribble expressed Seattle interest when Denker was later playing at West Valley College.

He then chose to play at Golden State Prep in Napa, entering what turned out to be a good news/bad news situation. "We were able to play 52 games that season and traveled to Phoenix, Florida and Indiana. There was no school so I was practicing four times a day against good competition. But as Denker explained, "college coaches weren't allowed to go out and recruit until the end of the season."

Thwarted once again, he headed back to the South Bay to play as a freshman for West Valley College Coach Danny Yoshikawa, formerly an assistant at St. Mary's College. In his freshman season, Denker averaged 14.7 points, 5.0 assists, 4.1 rebounds, shooting 48%+ from the floor and 43%+ from three-point range, while being showered with Freshman of the Year, First Team All-State, First Team All-League and First Team All-Defense honors. The Vikings lost in the state championship game to CCSF. "But I didn't receive a lot of D1 interest so I attended Cal State San Marcos."

This season, San Marcos enjoyed a big run in the second half of its schedule, coinciding with Denker's return to health. He was named to the NCAA West Region All-Tournament Team and the California Collegiate Athletic Association All Tournament Team for his performances in San Marcos' four post-season games in March. Denker led CSUSM with 26.3 points per game while going 53% (35-of-66) from the field, 47.8% (11-of-23) from three and 92.3% (24-of-26) from the free throw line. He was his team's leading scorer in all four March contests and posted a career-high 31 points in the semifinals of the CCAA Tournament against Chico State. Over the season, Denker averaged 14.5 points over the season, shooting 44%, 40% and 92% as well as totaling 3.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists.

About his health , "I developed an auto immune infection in my body called MRSA. This made me very sick and was damaging my body and preventing it from having max energy output and even was affecting my heart and lungs. I developed a infection mass in my lower body that needed surgical removal and left me out of commission for several games.

Denker continued, "After my recovery, I worked hard to get back into playing shape and because I was working so hard I developed a rare tendinitis in my wrist that put me in a trainer-made makeshift cast that I needed to wear in order to play in games. I wore it for several games and it limited my ability to shoot and dribble with my dominant hand. I kept playing through it all though because my team needed me. After my hand recovered from that, I was finally healthy and ready to go which definitely helped lead to my in game performances at the end of the season."

Ultimately, Denker received a pair of D1 offers (the other being Cal State Northridge) alongside strong interest from multiple other D1 programs. Idaho remained the leader because "working for so long (to land a D1 offer), it was really important for me not to be wooed and to stay true." Of Seattle's four other announced signees, Denker is familiar with each and is already working out with EJ Neal.

Why Choose the Vandals?

"Coach Pribble is impressive. "He has great resolve in his way being the right way and he goes and proves it." Pribble won big as the head coach at St. Martin's University in Washington and he played an integral role in Seattle's move into consistent winning. A Bay Area native, who played and later assisted at California, each of his new recruits thus far are uniquely either from the Bay Area or the Seattle area.

Denker also wanted noted in that "I am now a combo guard. I still can shoot well, ballhandle and pass but I'm stronger, I can post up and set up mismatches on screens. One of the reasons Coach Pribble became interested in me is because of my versatility."

Denker will major in Communications. "Then I want to play professionally and eventually enter the coaching ranks, like my Dad and his Dad."

--------------------

6-foot-8 Deejuan (Grant High) Pruitt is transferring from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to Jacksonville. After averaging 11.0 points (48% shooting) and 8.5 rebounds this season, Pruitt ended up punching an opponent in a league tournament quarterfinal game and tossed from the game. Look at this video of the two in the backcourt starting moments prior to the punch

What is the opponent doing? Besides baiting Pruitt in an extremely weird manner? Why didn't the referees rush in and separate the two long before the punch? Violence on the court should never be condoned but this was preventable.

Pruitt's departure from SIUE isn't a lone action as six of his teammates are also moving on. This from a 19 win squad is unusual.

--------------------

EJ Neal to Push Idaho to Vandalize

6-foot-5 City College of San Francisco guard EJ Neal has multiple numbers to be proud of this season including 11.0 points per game, shooting percentages of 54%, 41% and 78%, plus 4.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists while playing on an extremely talented team. But one number looms extra large in particular: 100+ charges taken in his last two seasons. It's an achievement that requires a particular mindset, one that very few players are willing to adopt. The primary reasons being doing so will never get anyone on a highlight reel and collisions often physically hurt. Credit Neal for his particular unselfishness.

His words: "Coming into high school, I wanted to make an impact other than scoring so I began studying film. Taking a charge is a foul on the other team and I'll give up my body to get the ball back. People say it hurts but that's soft. My mindset is win at all costs."

Now Neal is headed to University of Idaho to play for Coach Alex Pribble, a Bay Area native. "He first made contact with me back when he was the head coach at St. Martin's (a DII university in Washington). "He knew what I could do even back then." Pribble went on to assist at Seattle before landing the Idaho position.

Why Choose the Vandals?

"Idaho was the best opportunity, the facilities are good and the fan base is ready to win. I loved what they are trying to build and having a first-year coach asking me to help played a part.

After starring as an All-League honoree at Sacred Heart Prep of the West Coast Athletic League, Neal spent a season at Balboa Prep, down near San Diego. Having relatives in the area helped in a smooth transition. What did he achieve? "I expanded my game by playing against the higher competition down there and I also played my true position, not in the post."

What will Idaho fans be witnessing from him? "I have a take-no-prisoners attitude, vocal leadership and I get the guys ready. I'm a shooter and scorer and my shooting is underrated. I'm a three-level scorer, who can shoot the deep ball, go to the rim and score mid-range. My ballhandling and rebounding are good and I can defend the 1-5 positions. I play with a lot of passion -- I want it more."

After two seasons at vaunted CCSF, Neal offered that he is prepared. "JUCO is hard. We had a lot of D1 caliber guys and practices were intense."

Neal's Long Memory

Interestingly, Neal easily remembers those schools who displayed interest in him but later backed off. Two are fellow Big Sky Conference members. "I felt slightly overlooked and I don't think I'm going to hold back." So conference play and maybe even some non-league games look to be extra intense.  Count on Neal to make it so.

SJSU Basketball: Who Is Staying, Leaving & Being Pursued

With Mountain West Conference Player of the Year 6-foot-6 Omari Moore signing to turn pro, San Jose State University Coach Tim Miles not only has a huge scoring hole on his hands but also needs a go-to guy in the last seconds of games and possession counts. Is that talent currently on the roster or needs to be signed?

Let's begin with the personnel knowns.

Signed

6-foot-3 shooting guard Pasha Goodarzi out of Valley Christian High, San Jose, inked a letter-of-intent in November. Goodarzi is a remarkable shooter, a talent needed on this squad. He's not the most athletic but has the hunger to really be prepared for his role and also to improve as his current workout routine indicates.

6-foot-10, 225 big William Humer, out of Sweden and attending McCook Community College (IL) where he just completed his freshman season also signed on with the Spartans. None of Humer's first-year stats stand out (49%, 34%, 60% shooting, 7.8 points, 6,5 rebounds, 21.7 minutes a game) leaving it difficult to pinpoint how much he will play and therefore contribute next season.

Committed

6-foot-8 guard/forward Diogo Seixas, attending a Florida prep school, comes from Portugal. He committed to SJSU back in February.

Recruiting Possibilities (as listed in various media entities)

The following are generally tweets connecting prospects to SJSU. Some of these posts remain current with interest on both sides, some are likely out-dated but it's impossible to tell which is which as nobody generally posts that so-and-so team or such-and-such player no longer has interest in a certain player/team. Also, we have eliminated posts of SJSU recruits of interest who signed/committed with other teams.

"6-foot-7 2023 prospect Jalen Carruth is down to six

6-foot-9 2023 Xavier Edmonds is down to three:

  • San Jose State
  • Washington State
  • New Mexico"

More.

6-0 point Tyler Rolison is mentioned in this article as having an offer from SJSU. He visited Nevada in mid-April after tripping to SJSU.

"6’11” Isaac Jack, formerly of Buffalo & FtErieAcademy, has heard from Arkansas St., George Mason , St. Bonnie’s, Grand Canyon, Oregon St, San Jose St, San Diego, Pitt, Portland, Portland St. He will visit Vanderbilt soon.

Dated April 26 2022: "Fort Erie C Isaac Jack will visit San Jose State this weekend. ETSU, St. Peter’s and Drexel have gotten involved in the last hour. Recruitment heating up for 1 of the top and toughest Cs in Canada"

Jack originally signed with Buffalo. He checks in at 250 pounds and in 31 games/20 starts and 16.4 minutes a contest as a freshman averaged 5.2 points and 4.6 boards, shooting 66% from the floor and 60% at the foul line.

The Portal Report: "Southern Utah transfer Drake Allen tells TPR that he has received interest from:

  • Utah
  • Nebraska
  • Portland
  • BYU
  • Bradley
  • Bowling Green
  • Utah Tech
  • Indiana State
  • New Mexico State
  • College of Charleston
  • UVU
  • GCU
  • UNLV
  • San Jose State
  • Pacific
  • Seattle

Returnees

Below are the biggest contributors coming back:

6-foot-2 sophomore Myron (Vacaville High) Amey Jr. missed most of this season due to injury, will likely gain a redshirt year and is the most promising Spartan backcourt returner. He's a likely starter at shooting guard but will he be ready to contribute on a consistent basis?

6-foot-8, 245 sophomore power forward Robert (Archbishop Riordan) Vaihola surprised many after coming over from rival Fresno State as he scored 7.6 points a contest, shooting 71%, and grabbed 6.5 boards. He is the sole frontcourt talent with bulk.

7-foot, 220 junior center Ibrahima Diallo provided 6.0 points, shooting 59%, and 6.0 rebounds in just over 17 minutes a game as the starter in the middle. He led the Spartans with 58 blocked shots.

6-foot-1 sophomore point Alvaro Cardenas scored 10.0 points per game and produced a 120/69 assist-to-turnover ratio while shooting but 36% overall and 31% from long distance. Albeit a willing and able passer, he has difficulty creating separation on his dribble-drives, thus hindering his shot attempts in the paint and right now is best offensively as a catch-and-shoot marksman on kickout passes.

6-foot-7 junior Trey Anderson and 6-foot-9 Tibet Gorener each remained inconsistent. The former is athletic with some shooting prowess (43-113 from three-point range) but is unpredictable with his production each game. The latter came in from Arizona with three-point prowess but shot 33% on 163 trey attempts in his second year with Spartans.

The Spartans also lost a freshman big in 6-foot-8 Max Allen, a bulky talent who played very little and decided to transfer, plus Leo Torbor, a frosh guard who also played minimally.

In Summary

The upcoming signing period run from April 12 to May 17. It's likely the next few Spartans will be from the transfer portal.

It's important that Myron Amey Jr. be consistently productive next season and that Miles brings in another backcourt/wing talent who can do the same.

Diogo Seixas is an intriguing scoring prospect at 6-foot-8 but is he ready for the physicality of college ball?

A third big is a must and hopefully someone with size, muscle and strength who can contribute immediately.

The Spartan 21-14 overall, 10-8 in conference play records were remarkable. Minus Moore, repeating those marks are not likely achievable. But even with Moore in 2022-23, nobody was predicting a 20 plus win season, so who really knows?

Potpourri, Apr 19

Jalen Brown: "Due to unforeseen changes at Cal State San Marcos I have been released from my NLI and recruitment is 100% open."

SJSU Posts Opening for an Assistant BB Coach

Pasha Goodarzi Now a Spartan

Goodarzi signs his National Letter of Intent

As Camilla Eyring Kimball so spot-on offered, "You do not find the happy life. You make it.” In any life endeavor, another prominent component to success is having the right people in your corner. Pasha Goodarzi lives these truths and doubled down in the past couple of years. Now the 6-foot-3 Valley Christian High (San Jose) guard is headed to San Jose State University to play for the Spartans.

"I credit my last two years with the 16U Oakland Soldiers and Mark Olivier, the program founder and president," Goodarzi explained. "Some coaches thought other shooters were better than me and most said I wasn't a D1 player, but he believed in me before I believed in myself. He made a place for me and always had my back." One can bet Olivier was at least internally mouthing "I told you so" when Goodarzi totaled 19 points, including 7-for-8 from the field, and dished out four assists in a game at the 2022 Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL).

Goodarzi is sporting the Spartan's uniform

The second critical pairing began when the SJSU reached out to Goodarzi. "I felt wanted and I fit in. I developed good relationships with Coach Tim Miles and Assistant Coach Damany Hendrix.

How It Began

The Spartans initial interest in Goodarzi began in the summer of his sophomore year, reaching out here and there by phone. It increased to 4-5 calls a week before he officially signed in November 2022.

Goodarzi's official visit with the SJSU Spartans took place in mid-October. "It was lots of fun. The coaching staff first went to dinner on Friday with me and my parents. Saturday consisted of breakfast with the coaching staff, watching game video, and touring the campus. Coach Miles was really honest. He basically said I was an elite shooter, not necessary athletic but a high character kid. They laid out their plans about how I would be used in the rotation as a freshman."

What's Next?

So what is Goodarzi doing now to ready himself for the much more physical college ball?

"I've been attending open gyms the last five weeks and my off-season training consists of working out six days a week, three times a day with Sundays off. It's a combination of lifting, conditioning, basketball skills development, with the focus on basketball and the body. I work out with Jon McCall, who drives two hours to get to San Jose. I want to be more than a shooter and possess the mindset of being ready to compete as a freshman."

First it was Olivier, devoutly believing in his protรฉgรฉ. Then Miles joined up, offering a scholarship. Pasha Goodarzi is making quite the young life.

Jailen Daniel-Dalton Chooses San Francisco State

The abbreviated story of 6-foot-7 Jailen Daniel-Dalton of Gavilan College is he recently committed to play next season for San Francisco State Coach Vince Inglima.

However, the longer narrative is a fascinating tale of a young man who never stopped working while believing in his potential as well as surrounding himself with the right people. Below are those specifics.

Meet Jailen Daniel-Dalton

Likeable, intelligent and well spoken, Daniel-Dalton's route to a full ride scholarship is not typical. Sure, many players head to a community college before moving on to the four-year level, but very, very few of these come out of high school (Mountain View High in this case) with zero offers.

Mountain View High Coach Kevin Mack had plenty to say about Daniel-Dalton. "Jailen is an incredible person, not just an amazing player. I am so unbelievably proud of him. He has worked so hard and worked through so much adversity over the last six years or so. To see him grow as a basketball player with all the hard work he has put in is great. But for me, even more is how hard he has worked in the classroom. He really has dedicated himself to get good grades and takes academics so seriously. To see him thrive in the classroom first, then on the court as well, makes me so proud."

Mack continued, "Going the junior college route was the best route for him. It really got him to focus on the details of his game and work on his shooting, his strength, and refine his game. Coach Jensen did an amazing job of preparing him for this next step."

"Jailen’s basketball IQ and leadership had grown immensely over the last few years. To see him now understand the game and the strategy behind it and all the little details is really cool. He sees the game from a different lens now. He is a great leader and knows how to motivate his teammates and holds himself and his teammates accountable at all times."

Some ill-advisedly told Daniel-Dalton not to head to Gavilan which by the way finished 19-10 overall, 8-4 in conference play this season. In a case of beware of those who think they know something they don't, the naysayers pushed him to attend a more prestigious program.

But after averaging 16.4 points per game on 49%, 39% and 72% shooting while totaling 8.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists, plus blocking 38 blocked shots as a sophomore, Daniel-Dalton earned Honorable Mention All State honors.

About his strong season, it came about because "I remained optimistic and kept my faith in the system." That and "I got healthy after a shoulder surgery earlier. I got a little stronger and figured out my game. I got to the free throw line more, became efficient by picking and choosing my spots, and I rebounded more this year. I have a high basketball IQ."

Also, "my leadership took a huge step forward as I learned how to lead a team. In high school, I just kept my head down and did my job. Leadership is hard and can be tricky, but I figured it out. I came in early every day, thinking I have to be "the guy" and being in the right mood and frame of mind. I initially wanted to lead by example but you must be vocal and assertive and reach every player. My teammate Caleb Onuonga played a big part in my becoming the leader I am."

Gavilan Head Coach Derek Jensen offered, "I identified DD (Daniel-Dalton) as someone very talented and very under-recruited during his high school career at Mountain View. Luckily for us, we made a quick and easy connection. DD committed to Gavilan on the spot during his visit, which was completely shocking to me. From there, it was been nothing but positive."

The Transition To a Wing

He continued, "As a high school center, DD had a lot to learn and improve in order to become a four-year player, but all the raw tools were there. He was and is to this day extremely competitive, driven, focused, mature, coachable and hard-working. On top of that, obviously long and athletic. It took years for DD to develop into a full-time wing, but once he did, he quickly turned into one of the best players in the state. He was dominant in so many ways as regularly the best defender, rebounder, decision-maker, leader and competitor on the floor during any given practice or game."

"Our coaching staff did a great job pushing him to grow. Our training staff did a great job helping him through multiple shoulder surgeries and our academic support team with Darlene was huge for him as well. Above all, Jailen himself did everything asked of him and so much more. He came in hungry. He wanted to push himself and make himself the best he could be. DD the player is awesome and could play just about anywhere. But DD the young man is just an amazing person that our school, our community, our program and my family will miss very much. He will be like a little brother to me for the rest of my life and I cannot wait to see his continued success on and off the floor in the coming years."

Gator Head Coach Vince Inglima actively followed Daniel-Dalton all season, establishing and maintaining contact. Inglima is losing his top three scorers and needs to bolster his squad with fresh talent after a 16-13, 12-10 season.

Inglima and Assistant Coach/Lead Recruiting Coordinator Henry Anyiam handled Daniel-Dalton's pursuit.

Making the Gators His Four-Year College Address

"It felt right is the simplest way to put it," Daniel-Dalton explained. "The relationship we built up felt genuine, He came to the majority of my games and I went to some of their games to check them out. I wasn't tripping over the level. They were genuine from the jump, telling me exactly why they wanted me."

Daniel-Dalton is a member of a military household with both his father and mother serving. "My family is really tight despite lots of moves," the most recent being from Platte City, Missouri to Sunnyvale. The family also spent time in Georgia, among other states. On coming to the Bay Area, he remarked "I initially didn't get the lingo and it was strange here plus I had a crazy southern accent." But when he visited back in Georgia, Daniel-Dalton was labeled the California city slicker.

Regarding members on his thank you index, Daniel-Dalton offered "my list is huge. My parents, especially my Mom, because I can be a handful, for sure. I'm extremely close with my siblings (a 22-year-old sister and a 19-year-old brother). We're three peas in a pod, and my girlfriend is cool to be around. She always held me down and has been one of the best things to happen to me in these last few years. All my friends who support me and everyone at Gavilan has been extremely helpful, especially Derek Jensen and the assistant coaches. I also want to thank Coach Moe and JoJo."

Daniel-Dalton will major in kinesiology because "I want to be a personal trainer."

He plans to gain 15 pounds over the summer and stay in shape by participating in various summer leagues.
