For Avery Sanchez Competing Is Oxygen

Avery Sanchez displays an all-around game

"I love the competitive nature of getting better" and "I never ask a teammate to do something I'm not doing myself."

As for the initial quote, 6-foot-2 Avery Sanchez'scompetitive drive to better himself proportionately rivals that displayed by the late Kobe Bryant. Such may sound like an improbable stretch, writing up a high school talent (Pitman High) in the same  sentence as an NBA legend, but talk with Sanchez, then better yet, watch him practice and play. He loves the process of bettering his skills set as much as the game itself. To compete is not just to live but to thrive.

With an older sister roaming the soccer field on scholarship at Oregon State University and both of his parents having played basketball at Stanislaus State, Sanchez is a member of a family that has both enjoyed and gained from sports competition.

Leadership is another standout element in Sanchez's game. "I'm a very vocal player and I thrive on taking charges and diving on the ground for loose balls." He benefited from learning early on as a freshman what his high school coach (Harvey Marable) expected of players in his program and how to achieve those goals.

Sanchez competes to the very last second

Beyond being a beneficial court leader, Sanchez offered "I shoot the ball and pass really well, see the floor well, and do the gritty stuff that wins games." Both by watching a lot of film and starting out playing with older guys (which required he pass more than shoot), his court vision grew better and better.

Sanchez started out playing four sports (basketball, football, soccer and baseball) but by seventh grade, "I started weeding out sports until only basketball was left."

Sanchez puts the ball in the basket or gets it into his teammates hands

Asked if some overlook him since he plays for a school located in Turlock, a suburb of Modesto, Sanchez said, "a little bit but it's not something I worry about." His personal philosophy when playing basketball is to do what is needed. "I go into any game and adapt to it, doing whatever it takes to win. I try and fill the gap."

Regarding influences in his basketball journey to date, Sanchez cited both of his parents who also coached after their playing days, plus "Coach Marable who has provided immeasurable help on and off the court. He has an amazingly high basketball IQ."

Sanchez looks like a choirboy but battles like a demon

Sanchez has no geographical preferences vis-a-vis recruiting. He has taken an unofficial visit as well as camped with San Jose State University, a member of the Mountain West Conference.

This following personal anecdote depicts a very youthful Sanchez exuding confidence. "I was young and playing against my Dad and I really thought I could beat him one-on-one." Nowadays, the confidence remains unaltered and such a pairing just might have a different finish.

Brit Burden Is a Name to Know

Burden will likely be the only basketball-playing philosopher

6-foot-6 Brit Burden is going to do something big in and with his life. It may be big in a small way or small in a big way. It may or may not involve basketball.

Burden is but a senior at Piedmont High (near Oakland) and his vistas are wide open, but even more so than the usual someone close to exiting his teens.

Asked what he will major in collegiately, Burden said, "philosophy. Things interest me and thinking more about them helps with life in general."

Another query regarding where he sees himself 20 years after graduation, he offered, "being a difference maker in my community."

Burden earned first team status for his play this season

A third interesting Burden tidbit involves his sense of gratitude and respect for his Piedmont coach. Burden offered up thanks to Coach Ben Spencer not for 'working on my shot' or 'teaching me how to block out' but "for believing in me since my freshman year."

Yes, Burden is different in some ways. Different endearing. Different in his perspective.

But before it gets buried, Burden is also a talented basketball player. Asked to list his best basketball skills, Burden responded, "I have a high motor and I'm good at crashing the boards. I like to do the little things," what he calls "the small, winning plays." He also just surpassed the 1,000 points mark in his high school tenure.

Burden started slow but came on strong scoring 1,000 points

It's worth noting that he averages 23 points and 12 rebounds a game, per Spencer who added, "Brit has incredible footwork, he's a good passer, a strong basketball IQ because of film study sessions and, being long and quick, he's our best defender."

Asked about leadership, Burden explained, "I see myself as a leader because I'm more experienced. You want good vibes but I've had to toughen up to hold my guys accountable."

He sports a 4.0 grade point average as well as membership on the President's List for high academics, citing "time management as the key to that."

Where does he see himself positioned in college ball? "It depends on the level but it could be a four, a three or a two. I've handled the ball more as a senior."

Regarding recruiting, "I'm wide open. I'll go anywhere."

Honoring Those Helpful Along the Journey

Offering thanks to his parents for "always being there and allowing me to work on this dream of mine," Burden also credited Joell Crawford, found and director of Infinite Training (based in the East Bay and Burden's current AAU team), for "really caring about his players." Orlando Watkins and William Lew, both affiliated long term with Oakland High hoops were acknowledged for "getting me started on the right track early on in AAU ball."

Burden has the chance of being one of those talents who was undervalued in high school due to being a late bloomer. He could be a solid contributor say by his sophomore season once he finds what is his position at the four-year level.

Josh Devore Goes with Cal Lutheran

Novato High's Josh Devore had choices, a number of them enticing. The 6-foot-8 frontcourter could have landed close to home at San Francisco State had he chosen to do so. But, in the end, he did remain in the Golden State, just the southern part. He decided to attend California Lutheran, located between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. CL is a member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (which consists of nine teams throughout the southern California area). The men's basketball program is currently ranked eighth in the nation.

"(Head) Coach (Russell) White and 26-year-old (Associate Head) Coach Kyle (Milligan) reminded me so much of my high school coaches," Devore explained."They wanted me even before the season started and told me I would play as a freshman. CL plays almost positionless offensively and in high school I play as a wing (even as the tallest Novato talent). When I visited, the players and coaches showed great chemistry during practices."

Devore celebrating his signing at his high school

Devore did review the rosters of the various options he was considering, taking in the size of the centers and frontcourters. "Cal Lu has 4-5 bigs but will lose 3-4 to graduation  (by the time he arrives)." Devore is already on a weightlifting program generated by the Cal Lutheran staff and he'll arrive there in August. The school is located 20 miles north of Malibu and it's the practice facility of the Los Angeles Rams. Devore caught sight of a few Rams on his official visit.

Devore with his parents at the celebration

He did attend a Cal Lutheran camp in September but his official visit took place on the weekend of October 21 and 22. He committed to White and Cal Lutheran a few weeks later. "It was great to know where I'll be next -- a weight off my shoulders -- and going to a team that really wanted me was important."

Official Visit

On the first day of his visit, "I spent from about 4:30 p.m. to the rest of the night with the players." With the option of returning to his hotel room, he nixed that and slept in the school dorms, saturating his senses with the basketball program's culture while getting a solid sense of the school. "We went to McDonald's around 9:00 p.m. (rather than the usual fancy meal out with the coaching staff). It was great!" The next night he stayed in a hotel with his parents who had just flown down.

Devore won,t just be positioned in the paint

So what will Cal Lutheran basketball fans be seeing from Devore? "My best skills are my shooting and my playmaking. I play on the wing and average 4-5 assists a game this season." He shot 46% overall this season, 40% from long distance.

Regarding leadership, "I see myself as a leader, for sure. I'm always talking, be vocal with my teammates." It's often difficult for a freshman or underclassmen to emerge in such a role that is usually composed of upperclassmen but Devore will jump right in.

Best Basketball Moments

His top basketball moment took place when his Team Rampage AAU squad  traveled to Las Vegas. "We played a top team right away, with 50 or so coaches in the stands and I had 25 points although we got blown out by 40 points." Another top time took place in his junior year "when we didn't play a lot of games but we swept Marin Catholic and Coach Mike Saia twice." Saia is a Marin County coaching legend and "I really respect him," said Devore.

Devore is 'jazzed' about his signing

Looking to major in sports management, Devore will enjoy an unusual minor. "It's jazz studies. I have a passion for it and play the trombone." When he was younger, "I really wanted to play the trumpet and was disappointed when I was assigned to play the trombone. I asked why the trombone and not the trumpet and I was told it's because my arms are long."

Citing his influences, Devore noted his mother who "for sure, has really helped me with my school work. I owe a lot to her" and "my father who played at College of Marin, then Sam Houston State." The Bearkats are a D1 program located in Huntsville, Texas. Devore's mother is a 6-footer while his father stands 6-foot-8. Devore and his father have competed countless times against each other. He also lauded Scott Morgan, a longtime hoops trainer in Marin County. "He taught me how to play when I was five, to keep my eyes up and how to shoot properly." Plus, "Brandon Bracy, who completely changed my life when I joined his Team Rampage," a travel team that plays across the country during the spring and summer.

"Cal-Hi Sports Northern California Boys Player of the Week: Luke Isaak (San Ramon Valley, Danville) Jr.

East Bay Athletic League rival Granada of Livermore will be glad if it doesn’t have to see Isaak and the Wolves for the rest of the season. The 6-foot-5 junior lit up the Matadors for 25 points when the two State TOP 25 teams faced off in the EBAL playoffs and then last week they played again in the CIF North Coast Section Open Division playoffs. Isaak did even better with 28 points and 10 rebounds as San Ramon Valley moved on with a 77-68 victory.

Isaak and the team’s four-year starting guard, Seamus Deeley, have been as terrific of a 1-2 punch among any teams in Northern California this season. Deeley had 20 points and Isaak 11 when the team won the EBAL title on Feb. 10 with a 68-59 triumph over De La Salle of Concord (which had won earlier over SRV in the regular season).

San Ramon Valley first showed its legitimacy as one of the top teams in Northern California when it ventured down to Southern California in December and captured the Gold Division title at The Classic at Damien. In the championship game vs Dixie of Utah, Isaak canned a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer and finished with 17 points in earning tourney MVP honors. Deeley had 19 points in the same game.

It may be tough for the Wolves to keep their winning ways going on Wednesday in the semifinals of the NCS Open Division since the opponent will be NorCal No. 1 and state No. 6 Salesian of Richmond. They will be in the CIF NorCal regional playoffs (most likely in D1) and in that field could make a deep run similar to the one that Granada went on last year before it lost in the state final to Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks."

Drew Fischer Is His Own Point Guard Prototype

6-foot, 175 pound Sacramento City College sophomore Drew Fischer is not your average point guard. In today's hoops world where ones or points are now expected to be prolific shooter/scorers, he has created his own prototype. Specifically it means an astounding 8.8 rebounds a contest, a number off the charts for someone measuring 72 inches. He has also provided a superlative state-leading 206 assists versus just 57 turnovers. Add in 74 steals in 26 games along around eight plus points per game, 46%, 37% and 60% shooting and there you have his numerical summary.

Here's Fischer describing how he created and goes about performing his craft. "I'm more of a traditional point guard, a throwback, because I'm not a scorer first. My plan is to get my teammates the best look with the ball. I try to get in gaps and use sealing and my strength."

His rebounding prowess (although his numbers indicate more than that description, more like expertise or mastery) has its own back story. "In my sophomore year in high school, I was small and not strong. So I learned how to read the ball, where it's going to go if it doesn't go in the basket. I learned this by paying attention when I was playing all day, every day." Fischer has since added strength by lifting weights which has made his board work even more formidable.

Top Skills

Asked to detail his best basketball skills, Fischer first offered, "my IQ, it's my best skill. Second is my playmaking and passing. Third is playing to win, meaning doing what gives us the best chance of winning." It's like Fischer has a super computer continually running in his cerebral cortex, minus any negative emotions, just focused on what wins basketball games.

Fischer's journey to basketball and Sacramento City College is a curious one. "I played baseball up to the seventh grade -- it wasn't basketball playing for me, at least not first. But I liked basketball more when I was growing up. When I got to Liberty Ranch High, my friends were playing basketball. I joined them and was the youngest. I learned how to play more physical. I liked the Columbia (College) coach, he was a nice guy (Rob Hoyt) and that the school had dorms. But I committed to Sac City on March 23 of my senior year and moved to Sacramento in June after graduation." Sac City offered an open gym and that dovetailed with someone intent on bettering his body and strength in preparation for college level opposition.

Evolving Leadership

Regarding the trait of leadership, Fischer offered, "I would say I'm a leader as I'm one of the more vocal players on our team but I also lead by example. You have to be a leader at my position -- it's needed at my position. But I matured a lot more in the delivery of my message so that things I say have credibility."

Drew Fischer—Sac City Sophomore PG 6' 175 lbs

Fischer noted a pair of best basketball moments, both involving the same opponent. "Beating (rival) Cosumnes River College at home in January was a fun game. It was electric, with the score going back and forth. We were down late by three or four points but won 90-83 in overtime." Fischer went for a triple double consisting of 13 points, 11 assists and 10 boards. "Then last Tuesday at CRC, we won again with AJ (guard Andrew Ferrara-Jones) scoring 36 points (including seven treys)." Down by seven at the half, Sac City came back and won 78-72. Fischer's line: six rebounds, five steals, four points and four assists.

Three Influences

As for basketball influences, Fisher cited a trio, two coaches and a player. "Mark Martinez, my AAU coach and the father of Gavin Martinez who is a freshman on our team this season, stressed doing the right play every time. The message obviously sunk in. His second influence is "guard Greg Milton, a big part of my journey. He played at Sacramento City College as a freshman (earning all-conference honors) before transferring to Wyoming. I always had to guard him and learned I couldn't afford to make mistakes." Fischer also lauded Brian Chavez, his coach at Liberty Ranch High, for his assistance in bettering his game.

As for academics, Fischer sounded a familiar note. "I get things done, my assignments are turned in on time and I pass my classes." He is looking to major in business and entrepreneurship at the four-year level with a desire to work in real estate.

So what's not to like of someone determined to maximize his potential and make his teammates more effective?

From Anthony Chiang's article which included the following on former City College of San Francisco talent Delon Wright who was just picked up by the Miami Heat:

"...Wright, 31, averaged 4.1 points, 1.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 39.3 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from three-point range in 33 appearances for the Wizards this season. He was used by Washington in a bench role, averaging 13.8 minutes per game.

Like most of the Heat’s guards, Wright (6-5 and 185 pounds) brings versatility to the position as a player who can be used on and off the ball. He has totaled 82 assists to just 11 turnovers this season.

Wright is not a high-volume three-point shooter, averaging just 1.2 three-point attempts per game in his limited playing time this season. He has never averaged more than 2.7 three-point attempts per game in a season during his NBA career.

Most of Wright’s shots this season have come from inside the paint, as 56.6 percent of his shot attempts have come from that area of the court. But he has shot an inefficient 43.5 percent from inside the paint this season.

Wright’s best work comes on the defensive end behind his knack for forcing turnovers, averaging a career-high 2.8 steals per 36 minutes this season. Among those who have played in at least 20 games this season, Wright has averaged the sixth-most deflections per 36 minutes this season at 4.6..."

Wright went on to play at the University of Utah and was selected with the 20th pick in the first round of the NBA draft.
